The suspension is unrelated to how much playing time he was getting, of course, but just to evaluate the impact, did Hansard even take any snaps last week? With all the injuries at defensive tackle, I have been surprised how little he has played. Does anyone have snap counts for him from recent games?

It was caught on TV and the announcers dwelled on it. They showed the replay at least twice. Not surprising that it drew the attention of the b1g, especially given how much they hate us.

I think its all a big mis understanding, looked to me he was protecting himself
Nonsense, it was more than than that and any sentient being should understand that.

it was not over the top egregious but is absolutely more the “protecting himself”

I don't know why Franklin didn't check with me first but I don't agree with a suspension for this. The apology was more than I thought necessary.

Looks like the corrupt B1G was calling the shots....

"The Big Ten had reached out to ask if Penn State planned to discipline Hansard", Franklin said.
Really? The conference reached out? Between this and Harbaugh saying the conference apologized for officiating in their game last week, we can expect the referines to be out in full force this week.

The cheap shot that the Illinois DL put on Clifford was a lot worse than Hansard's. Not sure if they replayed that on TV, but they replayed it about 20 times in the stadium. Flagrant, cheap, long after Clifford was out of the play. That deserved a suspension.

As was the b10 action. They should be punishing the refs who didn’t call it, not the team and player after the fact. Smacks of an attempt to coverup incompetence of their officials.
Difference is that I don't expect the B1G to do the right thing- I expect more from our players.

Paterno would have also disciplined Hansard; it just would have been more discreet. He would have to work his way out of JoePa's doghouse. Joe would have also told the BIG to mind their business.

Yep, coming into the season I thought that with Beamon out that Hansard had a chance to be the #3 DT.

Wonder what went wrong for him.........

I think Hansard's lack of attention to his defense being on the field speaks volumes more about why he, perhaps, doesn't see more snaps than the reactionary shove did.

Smith got a PF on a roughly similar type shove. Who were we playing ?

Not to me. A life lesson is never an overreaction. Fred will look back on this and be grateful.
Meh, I didn’t think it was that bad. Not really much of a difference between benching for a half and his normal use anyway though, I suppose.

My guess is Hansard posted the apology and Franklin issued the suspension because the b1g was looking into it and Franklin didn’t want the b1g issuing the suspension. It looks better to handle it in house and say the right things than to have the b1g step in.

Strikes me as a bit of an overreaction.
Hey,
Isn't any issue that draws public opinion about Penn State A PROBLEM FOR OUR INCOMPETENT LEADERS AT THE UNIVERSITY. Tongue in cheek, these real estate people are exceptional in their endeavors turning the market to suit their investments, maybe student tuition will subside to a reasonable amount.

OF COURSE THE LEADERS OF OUR UNIVERSITY ARE SECURE NOW THAT THEY ARE BRINGING AN ECONOMY INFUSION AND GAMBLING TO THE AREA.

Oh...misunderstood...you think the punishment wasn't too bad? I would agree. Should have been suspended for one full game.

Oh come on! That wasn’t bad enough to warrant a suspension.

Does anyone remember Aaron Hernandez trying to gouge out another players eye. Urban said “Aaron went too far which is why I making him sit out a half next Saturday.”

Let's play B1G "Front Office" football administration...

Scenario 1: Hansard gets flagged for Unsportsmanlike Conduct by alert officials during the game and PSU gets a 15 yard penalty as a consequence.

Scenario 2: Because the B1G officials missed Scenario 1, PSU is forced by the B1G HQ to sit a player, at a known position of weakness, for 1/2 of a game against a formidable opponent whom they desire to win.

I'll stop now...

No, you understood correctly. I don’t think the infraction was that bad. I don’t think it was worthy of a suspension or in need of a public apology. It was dumb, it was unsportsmanlike and that’s about it.
My other point was that it doesn’t matter if he’s suspended for a half, the whole game, or the rest of the season. He’s not really a contributor anyway.
I wonder if the consequences would have been the same if that was a healthy Mustipher?

You think the big ten would overstep their bounds and impose a hypocritical punishment on a PSU player? You're nutz.

Franklin should have suspended him for a half and made it retroactive to the MD game. Didn't that happen anyway?

I'm sure this isn't enough to leave the Big Ten. But we'll find the straw that breaks the camel's back soon enough.
Sorry - I don't mean to turn this into a "Leave the Big Ten Now!" thread, but leave Penn State issues for Penn State. The Big Ten should keep their fingers in Big Ten stuff. Leave the Big Ten and say that we'll re-join when we get our bowl money back (with interest) and a special deal to let us choose our referees for conference games. And put Joe's name back on his trophy. And figure out a way to change all your votes in 1994 to Penn State. And nude pictures of Bea Arthur. (Okay - I don't really want that one, but make the Big Ten shlubs go looking for them.) And make them match every dollar raised for THON. What else should we demand?

I respectfully disagree. This team has demonstrated a lack of discipline on so many levels. I think it was about time that the coaches took some disciplinary action. Actions need to have consequences. This will be a valuable lesson for not only Hansard but for the whole team. And let me be clear. It matters not to me who is disciplined. If Dotson was the perpetrator, he should receive the same disciplinary action and I would support that.
