I don't recall ever seeing a Huskers team that was so soft, perhaps the '07 team. I vaguely remember when Riley was first hired, Boyd Epley came out saying that we needed a year and a half of conditioning to get up to par. Well, it has been that long since he made his statement and look at our product now. Below is the quote from the article.

Epley also said in December that Philipp's work had been “great.”

“If we could stop the world and let Mark go develop these guys for a year and a half, I think we would be right back where we need to be,” Epley said. “That’s about how far off we are."

I don't think Epley and Philips are necessarily the problems. I wonder how much these coaches get into these players *** about hitting the gym hard. I saw Newby and Gates at a bar last year in Tennessee. They were hanging around the only few Husker fans in the place. Gates looked just like a big kid. Most of the husker fans hard bigger arms then him. And I mean no disrespect, he'd most likely kick my *** but if you didn't know better you wouldn't think he was a football player. I'm sure many have seen what I'm talking about.

And I don't think that was on him completely . I don't see Cav being a hard *** on lifting or someone you'd take seriously about it. Langs had to motivate Cav to ride a bike cause he was having serious health issues with obesity. When you have soft coaching they don't get on to the players as much. One of the first things guys will slack on is lifting. You think TO or McBride would allow for soft work outs by players? Epley & Philips can only do so much. One coach that I thinks players are fit is K dub. And Our WRs aren't the problem with this team.

I agree with your post. I think we're slacking on that end as well but some look like they're in pretty good shape.

This is an extremely important topic especially when it comes to the offensive line. The Pipeline tradition is dead without a renewed emphasis on strength and conditioning.

Quoting one poster. I'm not sure Epply and Phillips are the problem. That could be. But they don't look like they have been any part of a solution.

It's not only the coaches. They have the tools to hold players accountable, and they should. But it also comes from the players holding each-other accountable. It means guys say something when they teammates taking shortcuts. Missing workouts and summer drills is unacceptable. Drinking the night before a game is unthinkable. Putting parties before wins is going to make you an unpopular guy in the locker room quickly. Yes, players during the championship years knew how to party, and party hard, but there was also a price to pay for those guys who had an attitude that they just didn't care about winning, nor want to be there.

Toughness is a mentality as well as being physical. Think this team has taken on Riley's Mr. Rogers persona.

One of the glaring differences between Bo and MR is that Bo made sure the players were doing what they were supposed to do. We may joke about him sending GAs to make sure someone got out of bed and to class or workout. But, how many of you would have drug your butt out of bed every day for class or workout without someone holding you accountable. IMO, if Bo hadn't been such a lazy recruiter and only about 2/3rds the *** he was, he could have been successful here. Could you imagine Fisher skipping every class of his last semester had Bo been here? I don't think so. Reilly and his staff "expect" the guys to do the right thing with little accountability for not doing so. Yes, its up to the players to police themselves to an extent, but they are going to take their que from the leader. Personally, I think that's just a lazy approach by Reilly and to avoid conflict with players. Setting the tone and holding the players to it is not an easy thing to do. Just calling them grownups and saying its up to them to do the right thing for themselves is the easy way out. Epley and his staff don't control playing time, so there is only so much they can do. Getting a coach who requires his players to buy into Epley's program will do wonders for our S&C. I think you could see a marked improvement by next fall.
