Who directs the assistants? Who runs the program and sets the tone of practices? Certainly not the assistants. This is Tom’s team and it’s his way or the highway. Why is that so difficult for you to grasp?Half of his kids are D1 AAs before stepping foot on campus. I would pay him big bucks to be an assistant for a few years. When I think of technicians, I think Strittmatter, Juergens, Perry, McGinness, Cliff Moore, DSJ....that's the role of a good assistant
Terry sets the tone as well depending on the day.Who directs the assistants? Who runs the program and sets the tone of practices? Certainly not the assistants. This is Tom’s team and it’s his way or the highway. Why is that so difficult for you to grasp?
I'm willing to see what she does after this year before making a claim like that. She moved on from BF and Fran so I dont think she's willing to settle for mediocrity.I think it should tell everyone that If Tom's seat isnt even warm yet that Beth and the administration doesn't care about wrestling. Im guessing this is just going to be a forgotten sport with BG and her stastaffi

While no one really doubts that's the case, the dumbfounding fact is the team has progressively wrestled less and less like TnT and more and more like the other assistants.Who directs the assistants? I don't think Tom gets any say in the call at all. If Beth didn't let Kirk make the call on his own boy then nobody gets to.I am of the opinion that there will be no changes to the staff following the season, I think Tom is going to get to call his shot when he's ready to say it's time to move on. We do not have a donor like okie st that pretty much said I will fork over the cash when David Taylor is made the head coach. Money talks and we don't have that guy behind us.
We will all know as soon as Terry & Morningstar's contract extensions are announced. If 1years each = hot seat. If extended out to 2029/30 season to match Tom's- Then Beth must not think Iowa can do any better.I think it should tell everyone that If Tom's seat isnt even warm yet that Beth and the administration doesn't care about wrestling. You post on here consistently as if you know what Beth is thinking. I have asked these questions before and you never answered. Have you ever spoken with her directly? If so, about what? Mind you, comparing Brands and Kirk is beyond laughable. I don't care what sport you are talking about, you don't make comparisons to football. Even basketball, you really shouldn't compare, let alone wrestling.I don't think Tom gets any say in the call at all. If Beth didn't let Kirk make the call on his own boy then nobody gets to.
I would say the only reason Tom would be back next year as the buyout isn't quite ripe enough and it needs one more year. Plus its a safe play (although I don't think Beth would think like this) to set the expectation for next season, and let Brands fail to meet them as the team wont be any better IMO. Then the university saved money and it is on him, not her.
Plus although it wont happen given an ultimatum. He could shake up the coaching staff but imo its pointless if he is driving. He cant get out of his way to trust other coaches to do what they do best because he is too controlling. You could bring in Nolf but Tom would put clamps on what he would teach.
With the history of wrestling at the school and the state of Iowa - zero chance that happens.I think it should tell everyone that If Tom's seat isnt even warm yet that Beth and the administration doesn't care about wrestling. Im guessing this is just going to be a forgotten sport with BG and her staff.

We can disagree about Brands as a coach and whether or not he should be fired. You can call me all the names you want. But, if you are going to talk like you KNOW what Beth is thinking and will do, it would be nice to know HOW you know such things...
More deflection...nice! It's a very simple question. Either you have spoken to her, or you haven't. If you have, with it being more than a hello and shaking hands at an event, I would actually consider your opinion in the matter much more valid. I would assume many here would as well. If you haven't, it sure wouldn't change anything considering the fact we already very strongly disagree.I'd tell ya but you would just argue that too!
That’s on TnT, imo. It’s their program. While no one really doubts that's the case, the dumbfounding fact is the team has progressively wrestled less and less like TnT and more and more like the other assistants.
I have an honest question here...do Tom and Terry still get on the mat with our guys? That’s on TnT, imo. It’s their program.
I think you need a snickers. Judging people on actions rather than personal friendship is much better. Everything he said should be very obvious to even a casual observer. How can you be so adept at writing and so poor at observation? Knowing Beth has absolutely nothing to do with watching what she does and letting her actions speak to her intentions. You get to know who a person really is by watching what they do over listening to what they say.More deflection...nice! It's a very simple question. Either you have spoken to her, or you haven't. yeah, what a waste of time talking about it on a ........ message boardI dunno who needs to hear this but Strittmatter is not ever going to be the head coach or an assistant with the Iowa hawkeyes. He's exactly where he needs to be. It's weird how alot of people on here think Iowa can just get anyone they want.

I am sure she understands the importance of wrestling to the University of Iowa and keeping everything close to the vest is the proper thing to do.Absolutely but MSU whole take is I need to prove to him she isn't just a lame duck AD who doesn't care about wrestling. Not sure what she has done for him to believe she would be that way but I have better things to do than debate that. I believe her history up until now speaks volumes so its amazing he goes the other way with the benefit of the doubt. We will know soon enough.

I think Strittmatter and Ironside would do wonders working with some of the athletes in the room, even without replacing Tom.

Why don't they put the staff on a Brian Ferentz like incentive plan? Average 12 takedowns or more as a team during dual meets or....

It’s obvious neither Strittmatter nor Ironside should be coaches but what’s with the loudmouth quip?Yeah...a guy who's 25 years removed from college, never won an NCAA title (D1) paired with a loudmouth who's been out of the game for all of that time plus. And nary a world medal between them. Quite the move for a premier college wrestling program.
Total #TTH. She may not have her hair on fire for change as much of some of us message board folks, but she knows the investment Iowa has made in the sport and the number of open seats (revenue loss) at CHA isn't going unnoticed.
Because that was a dumb idea by an AD who's now retired.
You don't know what that term means. (Though I agree with your overall point.)
Here we are agreeing again...this is a laughable suggestion.Yeah...a guy who's 25 years removed from college, never won an NCAA title (D1) paired with a loudmouth who's been out of the game for all of that time plus. I said "if". the poster i was replying to said he wont be on the hotseat unless next year isnt better. If we have to go another year with these results and no changes then I would say that Wrestling is not going to be an important sport going forward. you probably know more or at least will pretend to.Total #TTH. She may not have her hair on fire for change as much of some of us message board folks, but she knows the investment Iowa has made in the sport and the number of open seats (revenue loss) at CHA isn't going unnoticed.
Remember the last Iowa athletic director to fire a wrestling coach was a former wrestler himself and loved the sport. Gable also made a public comment that he didn’t think the wrestlers were getting what they should have been getting from the program, so you can imagine what he told Boelsby in person. What has been Beth’s previous involvement with college wrestling teams? Our wrestling teams still are much more nationally competitive than our other sports teams, and athletic directors just don’t put the effort wringing their hands about niche non revenue sports, as long as they run a clean program. Tom cutting his own throat with Bo, Melvin and their parents to continue to run a clean program proves this to her. With the history of wrestling at the school and the state of Iowa - zero chance that happens.
I would argue that wrestling at the University of Iowa is certainly not a "niche" sport. Other than the recent popularity of women's basketball, wrestling was a pretty clear number 3. There is no competition from any other sport for even number 4. This decision will be taken seriously.Remember the last Iowa athletic director to fire a wrestling coach was a former wrestler himself and loved the sport. Meh, not everyone thinks he's a great guy.Do you not listen to his "broadcasts"? He jumped the shark before jumping the shark jumped the shark. He's got Steve Stone Syndrome.
(But I do think he's a great guy. Nothing personal.)
Jody is a great youth coach. Those are crucial for developing the future Olympic gold medalists.Keeping him in place in PA and feeding the program that way is better than anything he could ever bring coaching wise. That state is thee best recruiting hotbed.....why would we remove that healthy lifeline? Poaching that club is as detrimental as locking down the Iowa top recruits and getting our hands on top Illinois kids too.
Ideally a balance of the 10 starters would be something like
2 Iowa kids
2 IL
2 PA
Fill in the rest - OH, MN, MI, WI, NJ, CA
Very crucial the next coach has a positive relationships with Stritmater and in roads to other clubs like Askren as well as more local clubs in Iowa and surrounding states.
It isnt as easy as just naming guys but almost wonder if say Jon Reader isnt being overlooked. Not the huge name but he checks a lot of boxes. Same with Cory Clark as an assistant.
Do Mark Perry and Cory even get along anymore? I wonder because of the breakup a few years back with the female wrestler he was dating.
This is some of the outdated thinking as well. That is not the pipeline it once was. That club is very similar to Iowa. Had amazing success, and kids flocked there. Its not really close to what it once was. The area is still a hotbed for sure, but that is not the pipeline it was. Training evolved, and better options popped up.Keeping him in place in PA and feeding the program that way is better than anything he could ever bring coaching wise. I believe Terry is very active, not sure about Tom.I have an honest question here...do Tom and Terry still get on the mat with our guys?
