students turned away from IL game

I’ve seen some social media posts from NU students saying hundreds of students were turned away from the game because the designated student sections were at capacity long before the tip. The lazy take is to dump on the athletic department for shrinking the student sections. But student attendance is, shall we say…sporadic. Selling a decent number of seats in the lower bowl makes sense, especially if the undergrads aren’t going to show up in force. A lot of those seats would be unfilled *and* unsold, which isn’t a good combination for both optics and revenue. I don’t know what the solution is here, but it sucks to turn kids away when they’re by far the loudest and most energetic fans in the building that is otherwise half orange. Open to creative ideas, though I’m sure this has been discussed multiple times within the AD.

This has become a topic in the game thread. By how many seats/what percentage did the student section shrink? Hasn’t it always been the sections behind the baskets?

They’ll happily reallocate seats to students if student attendance is consistently elevated. Collins et al would make certain of it.
It was the first sell out of the year and I suspect that was because we were playing Illinois and they bought out a lot of tickets due to their quick start in December. I have been to conference games were their were hardly any students at the game, so it is kind of a guess right now on how many would want to attend. Show up more consistently and this would be much easier.

I would love for this to be an actual problem. Because that would mean attendance was solid.

Instead, this is just whining. It's a one off.

I dream of a future with students behind the benches. Which only makes sense if the student sections were always full.

Back in the McGaw Hall era, the entire North stands contained the student section. For some rivalry games, it would be packed. For others, not so much. But if you had your student ID you were never turned away.

The North stands sucked. I got splinters in my butt from the crappy Woden bleachers. IFIRC they would dismantle them and put them in the North end zone at Dyche for football.

I would imagine if the problem (it's a good problem) continues NU will distribute tickets ahead of time so as to prevent issue of students getting turned away at the door. This is what my did my senior year (class of 84). You had to pick up tickets at Norris. Demand was there because of the newly rehabbed W-R and the excitement of the NIT the previous year.

The funny thing is I don't recall this being issue in the 2016-1017 season. Granted capacity is a bit less now but I don't think the student sections behind the baskets were affected that much by the shrinkage.

When we're winning, the students turn out in droves. We've just been difficult to watch in recent years, but hopefully things will be different this year.

That means most students could come in as freshmen and earn medical degrees at NU without having any difficulty getting a seat.

It was also the second day of winter quarter. No midterms yet. No papers due. Clubs and extracurricular activities probably weren't meeting yet.

Once we're a couple of weeks into the quarter, student attendance will likely drop when the casual student fan gets busier with their own stuff.

I think your recollection is correct. In the late 60’s and early 70’s they would put bleachers in the north end zone, and would sometimes fill them. I remember a few games where they had 55,000 at Dyche stadium.

My first game as a Freshman was against ND in '74. Didn't end well for NU. They had the bleachers filled for that one. Attendance was 54,301. I was the 1.

My era I remember we shared that section with the band. Always loved sitting right next to them...until the night someone dropped a tuba on my head.

Let the students in no matter what! Put them in the freaking Wilson club if necessary or let them do standing room around concourse.!The more fans in the place the better. Hopefully the home crowd will bring some noise and energy for the rest of the season.

Absolutely. And the weather was nice, and fraternity rush is going on so all the frats brought their members and their girlfriends and freshmen rushees. Let’s see what attendance looks like in 2 weeks when the weather is worse and homework kicks in.

But I do love a full house and it would be great if the students kept it up.

Or the fact that a bunch got turned away kids will commit sooner. It was quite an atmosphere

Might be more about the quality of the product than the weather.

Not if they are already sold

The two sections adjacent to the students on the west end are being filled by group sales to kids’ birthdays and grade school basketball teams. You’d think that the administration could fairly predict which games would be popular with students — like the early-quarter Illinois game, the upcoming Saturday Wisconsin game — and refrain from selling those tickets to non-students. Asleep at the wheel once again.

Reasonable suggestion. That said these are done long in advance and students have not had a habit of showing up to much

Whoa! ANOTHER seasoned citizen!

Maybe some recall a televised game there, late in the season when NU was out of it and injured, they showed the stands that were nearly empty except for ONE fan in the middle, with empty seats filling the screen around him, and he was reading "Miss Lonelyhearts" - whatta fan! Fitting symbol of the state of the program.

After the crushing loss to duh-OSU, it's shocking to get a sell out. And what a game they played!

Show time tomorrow. Which team will show up, the team that couldn't be beaten against Illinois or the team that got crushed by duh-OSU? duh-OSU looks pretty strong, just wish NU didn't open the game by diving into a deep hole. Really a tough lesson, but maybe now they know how to compete better. If the NU students think they're worth watching, that is really saying it. I'd guess the point spread will be

NU can WEEEEEEEEEEN! THEY MIGHT, THEY MIGHT , THEY MIGHT!

Go Cats!

Watching the MI @ MSU game and seeing the student section at the Breslin Center. I’m positive they turn away kids. No idea how they manage it, do they distribute admission before the game? Do they stand in line?

Coolest student section in the B1G. Though I believe the Boilers’ is louder.

Hate to say it, but that might have been yours truly. Winter quarter, 1972? (Alfred Appel’s “20th Century American Literature.”)

I don't remember a student section when I was at NU 1961 - 1965. I think we just showed our student IDs and sat wherever we wanted. Usually, because our fraternity had a number of guys on the team we sat behind the NU bench.

Hell no. Somebody pays good money to keep the seats around me empty.

The student bitching about free sports is always fun. Here’s an idea - have all students sign up with the wild side or whatever to attend two days in advance or pay $5 per ticket. The free ticket follies every season the cats win a game is too much. If NU falls to 5-8 in conference the students will be gone but the die hard season ticket holders will still show up and some student will complain about the lack of tickets next time they get over .500.

The fact of the matter is the students don’t show up regularly and the athletic department does not owe them seats. They don’t appreciate the value of a ticket bc it’s free. Make them commit to something. Even if it’s $5 if you sign up and don’t show up.

I go to many games (almost all) and more often than not I can count the students in attendance on two hands. I want the students there bc it’s more fun but don’t blame the athletic department for the fact they don’t have enough seats when the students decide the team is good enough that they will pay attention.

My son is at MSU. They have to buy season tickets well in advance, and then there is an active online ticket market among students.

As hot as NU is, you can get an upper deck, first row all in, ticket for $7 against RU. If you want to be economical, you can go to row 9 for $6!

No offense, but the place has been like a mausoleum for years. Bring the students and bring some energy. I could care less about the school making a few bucks on student ticket prices. Show your ID and walk in, only requirement is to be loud!
