Love comic book super heroes movies. If Suicide Squad bombs then DC is in trouble as far as feature films go.

Reviews have been surprising given all that DC put into it. But then again so have most of the rest of their movies except the last Batman trilogy.
Well it hasn't bombed in terms of money, which is really all that matters to the studios anymore. As of Saturday at 8 am, it has made $146 million

In 2008 Marvel with its own studio released a true to the comic Ironman with the perfectly cast Robert Downey Jr as the lead. The post credit scene is Nick Fury talking to Tony Stark about the Avenger initiative. From that point on Marvel began building to the Avengers movie with single movies for most of its members while also creating a cinematic marvel world that put them all together.

Since Marvel has its own movie studio now they can be more true to the comic origins of their characters where other studios tend to muck everything up. Even at their worst aka Ironman 2, Marvel still made a decent flick. I mean its not horrible.

DC is trying to play catch up but rather than take the time to play the long game with individual movies for each hero before they put them all together they are fumbling around rushing Justice League to the theaters.

The Wonder Woman movie actually looks pretty darn good based on its trailer. Best looking DC flick since The Dark Knight. Hope they don't screw it up.
Yep Marvel has done a masterful job at marketing. Every single movie is just a build up to another movie, so they get you hooked in wanting to get some closure.

I wish DC would concentrate on making movies and TV shows out of comics from their Vertigo imprint. SOme movies have already been make like a History of Violence, The FOuntain, and V for Vendetta and the Preacher TV show just wrapped up its first season on AMC. With DC going all dark for their movies, this would be a potentially sound strategy since the Vertigo imprint is marketed as comics for mature readers

  • Hellblazer
  • Sandman
  • Transmetropolitan
  • American Vampire
  • Astro City
  • 100 Bullets
  • Daytripper
  • DMZ - though I must admit I couldn't finish reading it as it dragged on for too long and I was losing interest. Half the comics I read fall into that category though. I would watch the **** out of a movie or TV show though
  • Fables
  • Scalped
  • Sweet Tooth
  • Y: The Last Man

The comic publisher I would really love to see get more involved in the film and TV industry is Image comics. Love the stuff they put out. But Image comics are all creator owned so there isn't much Image can do about it.

I have to say Deadpool was pretty awesome. Yeah, it got geeky, but it did put a fresh spin on the genre.

Also, Margot Robbie. Friends are going nutso for her, like she's worth the cost of admission for the movie. In real life, she's a 10. There's no debating that.. but what about in Hollywood? I'm honestly not that impressed. She looks like Jamie Presley's slightly better looking sister.. which again, for Hollywood.. meh.

I thought the Diablo arc wasn't bad.
I could have done with less of the Joker in the movie except for backstory.
Needed more interaction between Enchantress and Flag w/ the Squad through out the movie, maybe a better actress to portray her.

Reminds me of Guardians, having to introduce all the team and left little to develop a good villain.

I liked El Diablo. He's a character I wasn't familiar with.

I wanted to see more Joker. He was barely in it (apparently a lot was cut). It was cool seeing a Mad Love inspired story in live action, albeit abridged quite a bit. My favorite scene was the one in Ace Chemicals. It was pretty stylized, but it worked for me.

The Enchantress was just a weak villain. They didn't show enough of June for us to care about her. I thought she was okay until all of the garbage with the brother started. The finale is my biggest issue with the film. The only good part about the finale was how the main characters reacted to things that were true to character.

The super hero genre is designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator, the mouth-breathing retard that just sucks up popular entertainment. There hasn't been a good superhero flick since The Dark Knight, which was, what? 7 years ago now? Anyone still following this **** genre is a manchild.

So you are saying that the super hero genre is the equivalent of country music circa 1990 thru current?

They could left her brother out of the movie.
Been better to have focused on her messing with members of the team through out the film. Her "army" of converts was pretty dumb also with their ashen look.

Yeah Diablo was a surprise and a good redemption story.

Daredevil is incredible and Jessica Jones was really good. In fact the last 4 of 5 episodes of JJ were off the charts. So this will probably be great.

Marvel is killing it with their Netflix series. I can't wait for the Defenders.

Marvel just has better characters than D.C. so there's not much D.C. can do about it. Marvel does really well and they have a fantastic marketing machine behind it.

Again, Marvel just has so many known and established characters that give them so much depth. Like we mentioned on this thread, D.C. is top heavy with protagonists and then nothing else that would blow you away.

Yeah, she's locked up the "it" girl spot, right now.

She must've read Sharon Stone's book: How to turn showing-your-goods into a gazillion Hollywood dollars. We got it all [thumb2] in Wolf of Wall Street... but since then-- bupkis!

Margot Robbie and Jaime Pressly are darn near twins. It's uncanny. She's gorgeous but, personally, not all that into blonds as a rule. Agree with poster above that, for Hollywood, she's not all that special. Lot of beautiful blonds running around SoCal. Do love the Aussie accent, though.

Went to Star Trek this weekend and saw a couple of superhero trailers. Getting very tired of the genre. Just have no desire to go see 2-3 Marvel movies and follow 2+ TV series every year just to 'keep up'. Just not that interested in the MCU or any universe where I HAVE to see movie after movie in order to follow along. DCU is a complete yawn for me. Probably won't see any of their movies. Once you add in a Star Wars movie every year and a Star Trek every 2-3 years and a Hunger Games (heard they're considering making prequels to the original) and so on and so on - it's just too much.

It's not making it to China. Needs to make 750 mil to be a success. It's a dud.

The movie cost about $325 million to make (including marketing). Its spent 3 weeks at #1 at the US box office and the world wide take stands at $572 million. So I think that the studio would consider it at least a moderate success.

There was a The Hollywood Reporter article that had a source that said after reshoots it needed $750M to be considered a success. I've also heard $600M. My guess is $750M was the goal and $600M is their minimum. It probably won't get to $750M, but it will get reasonably close. Like BvS, it will make a profit, but fall short of expectations.

There's a lot more to the cost of a movie than just the cost of making it. The film studio spent a **** load of money marketing it.

Re-read my first sentence. I included the marketing figure into the overall cost.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_Squad_(film)

"As of August 21, 2016, Suicide Squad has grossed $262.3 million in North America and over $310.4 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $572.7 million, against a budget of $175 million ($325 million including advertising and promotion costs)."
