This is truly a surprise, Swain was such a 1A HS power for so many years. Unfortunately this is happening all around the state.

Expectations? Swain is a historical powerhouse. The tradition alone kept kids out in the past. I wonder if this may be a case of an outsider with new ideas, culture, coming in and changing things up causing some issues for kids not to play. JV is still going so that's the key to the future. It's very interesting to hear "expectations" are an issue for low numbers. Swain was never concerned about that before.

Not those types expectations. He has a been trying to hold the players to a higher standard off the field compared to the prior regimes. He has high standards and not all kids are willing to meet them so they didn’t play.

Many times the HC and staff have much higher expectations than the kids. They come in with a new system and lay down the law that worked at another school. It may stick and it may not. I have seen some state championship coaches go elsewhere and flop. The kids, parents, admin and staff have to buy in for any system to take hold. I hope the Swain kids have some success and realize they have a good coach pushing them back to the days of old.

There's some adjustment period, buy-in, and culture building, for sure. For the kids, the community, and the coach(es). Continue to buy in, handle the adversity, and things will come out better when it all mixes together. There's a lot of opportunity..Swain JV is 7th-9th graders and the JV program hasn't lost since 2023. They are on a collision course with Hayesville for the best JV record this year. If you look a little further back, since the 2022 season the JV program has only lost 3 games. Those kids are getting into the varsity level now. Sure, they're dealing with some additions, some departures, coaching/culture shift, etc, along with the natural adjustments from JV to Varsity. I guess my point is, there is at least something there to build off of.

There's some good pieces at Swain. Good, tough kids that will play hard..we just need more of them. If you watch the Smoky and Pisgah games, the kids on the field were not giving up, they continued to hustle and play hard. You also have a core group of kids that playing for Swain still means something to them, they're "local" families and names. If you live around here, you know that there's just not as many native Swain County people as there used to be.

The team has actually added several players over the last few weeks. That's a good sign to the culture that is being built, the impact of the players in the school and amongst their peers, etc. Hopefully, we get a little more healthy and stay healthy. There's still a lot of season left.
