Friday: Jason DeCaro announced his self (again) to the country in front a rabid crowd. He took the crowd out of it pretty early with help from Erik and Cooper. Jason was successful with all 4 pitches, especially the change up and fastball. The curveball looked the best it has probably since Omaha or FSU last year. Really solid outing from him and something he should take and build on confidence wise. The lineup produced 1-9 with huge swings from Paulson and Cooper early, Gavin was all over Norby from the jump and capitalized with a big double.

Saturday: Folger didn’t have his best stuff from the get go of this one, but settled in pretty well. ECU executed some of Cliff’s patented small ball stuff early. I was impressed with the way we quickly battled back to tie the game and kept it there till the 7th. Walker looked fantastic to start his relief appearance but in hindsight we probably should’ve went to Matty to start that inning, it just snowballed from there. I was pretty disappointed in a few guys through the whole weekend, those guys being Hull, Hynek and Maginnis. Hull REALLY needs to get going, we can’t take him out of the lineup with his defensive ability so him living up to what the staff knows he can do will be huge the rest of the way. Hynek and Maginnis didn’t have the weekend they wanted, you can really see the difference behind the plate between Hynek and Macon.

Sunday: hate the game got called early in a tie, but always understand taking the health and safety of the players seriously, especially this early in the year.
Lynch was electric most of the day. Had a few get away from him, although I think he hit the first guy on purpose. Left a slider up which got tagged off the wall, but overall I thought he was impressive running the fastball up to 98 today. The slider wasn’t as good as we’ve seen so a good outing from him to build off of.

a few shout outs for Paulson, Howe and Gav. Those guys had really really good at bats all weekend. To start the year 6-1-1 (LOL) is very good. Have a fairly easy week ahead, hopefully guys can gain some confidence at the plate and we can get some guys on the bump who need work.

Sawyer Black in LF? French is a great OF but not so great at the plate. I thought rotating Hynek & Winslow at DH & C was a pretty good idea but not so sure after the weekend.

Hynek is definitely a defensive liability compared to Winslow. I can see him catching midweeks but he shouldn’t be a regular Saturday guy once ACC play rolls around. It’s kind of unfair to Boaz, unless he catches Boaz better for some reason.

So far the pitching (overall) has been good. Not great except for DeCaro, but the other guys have done a ton of good things and are really close. Just need some more innings under their belt and hopefully gain some consistency.

Really liked today how Lynch was able to run his 2 seam inside for a lot of swing and miss. His velo is ++ and if he can command that pitch along with his 4seam and slider…no telling how dominant he can be.

Little concerned about Walker. His slider is one of the best in college baseball, but now other teams have a whole year of film on it. It’s his go to pitch and scouting reports might be telling hitters to just lay off and play the odds it wont be a strike. It’s so good a pitch that hitters have been chasing balls ridiculously out of the zone. Seems hitters so far this year are improved at chasing it and making him put it (or other pitches) more in the zone. Will need to add other weapons to the arsenal (Forbes mentioned a changeup) to play off his slider moving forward. Kid’s a competitor and confident he will do so.

Nothing against Boaz but if Lynch keeps pitching well and with how electric his stuff is, I could see him becoming the Saturday guy in the not too distant future

Cost us a run on both Saturdays, including the first inning to give them some momentum.
Also wonder how he is framing pitches, if tha was part of the squeezing.

We aren’t running at all. Last year, we stole 95 bases and we were only caught 14 times. Yes, Kepley was a big part of that, but we stole 50 bags with guys not named Kane.

This year, we are 4 of 7 in stolen base attempts through basically 8 games. And two guys I thought would have the green light (Schaffer and Hull) both have an OBP of .400 or higher (meaning they are reaching first base) and have only attempted 3 steals combined.

Stealing bases isn’t a guessing game..it’s a mathematical formula. And if Coach Forbes and Coach Jackson aren’t seeing a window for success with our baserunners right now that would lead them to run on Indiana or Richmond or ECU, then I doubt we see a huge uptick in SBA once we get to the ACC schedule.

Combine a low stolen base rate with a lower OPS (we are hitting a lot of singles and a few doubles through 8 games) and your offensive production is likely to come down from a year ago. I just hope the drop-off isn’t significant.
