Taylen Kinney, the No. 14 overall recruit in the national junior class, told 247Sports he has an official visit scheduled with Oregon for September 6.

"Josh Jamieson has been recruiting me since I was in the eighth grade," Kinney said of the Ducks. "He was recruiting me while he was coaching at Louisville. Then he went to Oregon and has been on me since. He believes in me. He brings up Jackson Shelstad when we talk."

I never feel good about our chance with Kinney...

I always have gut feeling we will end up with another PG or combo guard

But we will see

If Kinney comes here, great

If he chooses other school, we will grab another good guard

This year does not lack good guard players

It’s funny an article comes out that we lead and then immediately this comes out. Obviously he will visit a couple schools but I find it interesting.

I'll tell yah, I really won't lose sleep over losing a freshman recruit anymore. There's inevitably going to be better transfers in the portal, when we now have 1,000+ to choose from. Just not really worth the risk in this era of college basketball. I'm not saying don't go after the freshman at all, but teams will be just fine if they stick to returning players and hitting the portal instead.

Like for instance, where would we rank Otega Oweh in terms of on-court production last year, if we put him amongst ALL the freshman? Is he top10, top15? He's certainly going to be in that top 95th percentile of talent. Now Jaxson Robinson (disregard the injury).. is he top50? Amari Williams also probably top50. My point is, we can certainly create a team of transfers that would be just as good as if we got 3 top25 guys. The ONLY downside to this, and the one thing we can't make up with transfers, are that some of those top10 guys truly are transcendent, like a Flagg, Harper, etc. If you can get them, they are game-changers to a level that no transfer will be. But even then, you only have them for 1 year, and some recruiting classes. there's almost none of them anyways (like the season prior).

Good post. I’m so glad that our season no longer depends on the decisions of 17 year olds.

Or further.. how about if they totally suck as a freshman (Go down the list of the plethora of failed freshman seasons).? And how much that single year would cost, along with not even having them necessarily for year #2. It's like playing Russian Roulette with a half loaded gun: way too many possibles to wind up in trouble. I'd prefer getting the proven and experienced transfer, which to me, is like not having a loaded gun at all.

I do not think we are 100% in lead

If we are in driver seat and lock for Kinney, I do not think Pope will recruit many other combo guards/PG hard
I see what you mean about recruiting, but at the same time it would not be good to ever put all of your eggs in one basket no matter how good you feel. Kids can be volatile and one day could change even if they said they were coming.

Gotta be ready at all times for the next one.

I never trust “Team A is leading” speculation in high school recruiting. If Cal taught me one thing, it’s to not worry about these guys until they commit to/sign with UK.

I stopped worrying a long time ago what these high school recruits do and trust the coaching staff with the job of building a team. It will be what it will be by the end. Pope will get his and fill out the roster from the portal and extending his reach to add an overseas pipeline to build the roster. Player retention and targeting transfers that have multiple years left of eligibility is huge.

Whoever the UK Staff chooses to recruit is alright with me, I think they like a lot of players but who pulls the trigger first gets the spot.
This!!!

With NIL, Coach Pope seems to value a player’s desire to come here AND fit over raw ability. This kid is from Kentucky which should make it easier to get a better NIL deal, but who knows.

With how this staff is working in regards to recruiting, like others above have said also, I trust them to get the right players for UK.

I agree with this this and to the Kinney situation if I was in his shoes I'd take all my free official visits too.

If it wasn't for NIL. Why would anybody want to go to Oregon, they never win anything & they're located 10,000 miles from nowhere. But big time recruits were going there even before NIL came along.
