You seem to be in the know a lot more than me.Forgive me for forgetting the link, but his latest clip is all about Rocco Becht. He calls Becht "a step up from ANYTHING we had this year". Very interesting
Between a broken Allar, and a completely inexperienced (at the time) Grunk, that wouldn't take a lot.Forgive me for forgetting the link, but his latest clip is all about Rocco Becht. He calls Becht "a step up from ANYTHING we had this year". Very interesting
I would hate to lose Grunk. He was progressing nicely and has several years of eligibility left.Between a broken Allar, and a completely inexperienced (at the time) Grunk, that wouldn't take a lot.
Yeah I understand Campbell may want to have a QB he is comfortable with but if this is true this would be a massive over pay for a mediocre QB (checked ESPN stats and his QB rating was in the 60s and 56th overall). I also agree that Grunk improved and his first 3 starts were against teams either defenses ranked in the top 5 (his QB rating, albeit a small sample size), was higher than Becht. Seems to me you pay $3.5 million for guys like Sayin and Mendoza. It would be a mistake IMHO to lose Grunk. That would be, I think, a big mistake - IF it costs PSU Grunk (sounds like only speculation at this point).
Grunk may, or may not, be a better QB than Becht today,
But if he is not, he soon will be (by October? By 2027?)
If bringing in Becht costs PSU BOTH Grunk AND $3.5 million.... that is, IMO, insane - and a bad early look for Campbell. Becht just ain't "all that"
But maybe its just a bunch of speculation, that won't come to fruition.
Do we know even that Grunk is not going to follow Franklin to VTech? Do they have a QB? If so, with Obrien and Franklin there, Grunk is likely more at home there, Even so, if Grunk is not interested in sitting a year and learn the offense then he can leave. Becht gives Campbell the ability to potentially win next year, as he knows the offense intimately. There will also be QBs in the portal. For example, with Moore gone at Michigan PSU can circle back on Bourque. Also, Kroucher at Ole Miss may be looking after Kiffin left. Both are north east prospects for 2027That would be, I think, a big mistake - IF it costs PSU Grunk (sounds like only speculation at this point).

Btw, 3.5m in this market is not excessive for a QBThat would be, I think, a big mistake - IF it costs PSU Grunk (sounds like only speculation at this point).

What about the kid at ODU?Do we know even that Grunk is not going to follow Franklin to VTech? Do they have a QB? We have no idea what Grunk will do in a complete offense. At the moment he is a one read and run QB; he still needs a lot of development before he can run a complete offense. Or at least that is what he has shown.
And if not Becht, then PSU needs to go and get another QB for the portal to produce next year.
See my other post. Grunk is a RS freshman who started his career against very good defenses. Becht will be a senior who has had a very pedestrian career. The Iowa State poster who described him as a game manager described it perfectly.Do we know even that Grunk is not going to follow Franklin to VTech? Do they have a QB? For Mendoza, Sayin, Moore: absolutely. But please don’t try to compare Becht with any of them.Btw, 3.5m in this market is not excessive for a QB
Not great numbers, but he is a sophomore. He also was not highly valued as a recruit out of CaliforniaWhat about the kid at ODU?
I think he was a two star but has done really well and has a high ceiling. Not great numbers, but he is a sophomore. He also was not highly valued as a recruit out of California
PSU needs two QBs who are capable of running a complete offense and giving the team a chance to win; Campbell always was going to have to bring in at least one experienced qb, and if that hurts feelings, then that’s tough. The basis that Landon used for saying he is a step up is game film. Game film is the only measurement of use for that statement that's accurate. At the moment, Becht is a full field read quarterback, while Grunkmeyer is a one read, throw, or run and throw it away quarterback. I realize the love many of you have for him, but he needs more seasoning and experience. Campbell recruited Grunk also: I say he stays and if Rocco gets hurt we have a great backup ready to go.
I saw another Iowa St fan describe him as “erratic”.See my other post. Grunk is a RS freshman who started his career against very good defenses. Becht will be a senior who has had a very pedestrian career. The Iowa State poster who described him as a game manager described it perfectly.
Mendoza at Cal wasn’t what he’s been this season. For Mendoza, Sayin, Moore: absolutely. But please don’t try to compare Becht with any of them.
The best team Iowa State played this year was BYU and lost to them by 2 TDs (that would be the same BYU that was beaten handily by Texas Tech both times they played them). Grunk 2nd and 3rd starts were OSU and Indiana. What “big” games has Becht won in his career? Please enlighten us.PSU needs two QBs who are capable of running a complete offense and giving the team a chance to win; Campbell always was going to have to bring in at least one experienced qb, and if that hurts feelings, then that’s tough.
Becht is a battle-tested player who has played in a lot of big games and won a lot of them, including against teams like Iowa and K-State. PSU could do a lot worse if he decides to come; he would bring a lot of credibility to that position.
There are a ton of programs right now that would be absolutely thrilled to have Becht as their starter.Mendoza at Cal wasn’t what he’s been this season.
Also, Becht would’ve been the best PSU qb if had been on the 2025 roster; he’s a good college qb who plays with a lot of heart and poise. He’s also shown himself to be a leader, which our previous starter was not.
Call that rumor fodder for now until I see confirmation that they would pay him Allar-level money.View attachment 1066474
Not confirmed…just interweb fodder.
He is a better quarterback than Drew Allar right now.Call that rumor fodder for now until I see confirmation that they would pay him Allar-level money.
He won enough games last season to take his team to a Big 12 Championship game. He also beat Iowa the last two seasons; he led a last minute game winning drive at Kinnick in 2024. He’s a good college qb that has played in and won a lot of games in a Power 4 Confetence. The best team Iowa State played this year was BYU and lost to them by 2 TDs (that would be the same BYU that was beaten handily by Texas Tech both times they played them). Like I said, he would’ve been the best qb on PSU’s roster this season, even when Allar was healthy. He is a better quarterback than Drew Allar right now.
I am going to allow Campbell to do the enlightening; that is why they hired him. If he believes Becht gives PSU the best chance to win next year I am good. What I responded to was compensation. 3+m a year for a starter on a power four team is not crazy and is not reserved for the best, LaNorris Sellars and DJ Lagway both make north of 3m and neither has set the SEC on fire. Arch Manning is making 6.7m annually, Dylan Raiola and Underwood made 3m as entry level freshmen. And there many, many more examples of this. Having said that we do not even know how accurate the compensation number for Becht actually is.The best team Iowa State played this year was BYU and lost to them by 2 TDs (that would be the same BYU that was beaten handily by Texas Tech both times they played them). The thing is that Grunkemeyer fits Campbell’s style of offense much better than the finesse garbage that the previous coach seemed to favor.I am going to allow Campbell to do the enlightening; that is why they hired him. This may all be moot, as it is unlikely Grunk sticks around with Danny and Ty going to VTech. They will run PSU's "offense" at VT so he will surely feel more comfortable there.
Thinking objectively do you really see Grunk staying? 1. His QB coach will be at VT; 2. The OC at VT was the PSU TE coach and "co-offensive coordinator" and 3. The VT coach was his coach at PSU.The basis that Landon used for saying he is a step up is game film. Game film is the only measurement of use for that statement that's accurate. While I largely agree on Becht I would not categorize Grunk that way. I have watched him go through his progressions which doesn't make him a one read QB. Does he need work absolutely but he's young and will get much better. He was improved this year after almost every game. The basis that Landon used for saying he is a step up is game film. I have no doubt that this will be a better system, but it will require a learning curve with people with whom he is unfamiliar. I do not know what he opts for, but I suspect he leaves. He has familiarity with Franklin, Ty, and O'Brien (the last one being at the center of his development). Will there be a single PSU coach left on the offensive side of the ball next year? The thing is that Grunkemeyer fits Campbell’s style of offense much better than the finesse garbage that the previous coach seemed to favor.
The thing about him is that he’s only started six games and definitely is not a definite star player, although he has shown progress and probably will get better. Based on this, I doubt that there are going to be many Power 4 schools where he could go and get more playing time than he could at PSU, and I also doubt that there are going to many of these schools ready to give him a lot of money to transfer. Also, who’s to say that he couldn’t have a great spring and win the job over whoever comes from the portal.I have no doubt that this will be a better system, but it will require a learning curve with people with whom he is unfamiliar. I agree. He could evolve into a very good player with the right development. It all depends if Franklin wants him.The thing about him is that he’s only started six games and definitely is not a definite star player, although he has shown progress and probably will get better. Perception is reality in these situations with NIL. The perception of Allar last season was greater than the perception of Becht from this season. He is a better quarterback than Drew Allar right now.
Ask yourself this question, and I am not trying to be mean: If he portals out right now, other than Virginia Tech(not a top 25 program anyway), which top 25 team will he come in at, as the starter next year?Thinking objectively do you really see Grunk staying? 1. His QB coach will be at VT; 2. The OC at VT was the PSU TE coach and "co-offensive coordinator" and 3. The VT coach was his coach at PSU.
Does he want to learn a completely different offense or does he go somewhere where he is comfortable? I believe he leaves.
I understand your point. I am talking about all 22 game film, which is the best measure for on field in Game performance. Becht is a level above both Allar and Grunkmeyer.Perception is reality in these situations with NIL. The perception of Allar last season was greater than the perception of Becht from this season.
My point is that Campbell most likely could bring Becht in for less than that unsubstantiated internet post’s claim.I understand your point. I am talking about all 22 game film, which is the best measure for on field in Game performance. Becht is a level above both Allar and Grunkmeyer.
Yeah, this. Haven’t seen a PSU QB take noticeable, positively progressive “steps” week over week like Grunk in…well…I honestly don’t know when. Rocco may be a better play in 2026 but I don’t think it’s worth a 3.5m payday when Grunk has shown us the ability to improve like he has.I would hate to lose Grunk. He was progressing nicely and has several years of eligibility left.
So you've given the new coach 3 days before second guessing him, on a situation that hasn't yet come to pass. For Mendoza, Sayin, Moore: absolutely. But please don’t try to compare Becht with any of them.
Does this mean that Becht might not throw in to triple coverage in overtime games?Forgive me for forgetting the link, but his latest clip is all about Rocco Becht. He calls Becht "a step up from ANYTHING we had this year". Very interesting
At $3.5m?There are a ton of programs right now that would be absolutely thrilled to have Becht as their starter.
