He’ll be learning a completely different offense - it won’t be the same as AKThinking objectively do you really see Grunk staying? 1. His QB coach will be at VT; 2. The OC at VT was the PSU TE coach and "co-offensive coordinator" and 3. The VT coach was his coach at PSU.
Does he want to learn a completely different offense or does he go somewhere where he is comfortable? I believe he leaves.
I don’t disagree - and I have no issues with Rocco - I’m just not seeing that number for himQB is the most
important position on the field
I agree actually. Remember though, the last guy liked to give receivers with 2 catches and linebackers who can't run, half a million each just to stay. I think we are going to all be glad that Hoodjen is here now. He's got this.I don’t disagree - and I have no issues with Rocco - I’m just not seeing that number for him
Forgive me for forgetting the link, but his latest clip is all about Rocco Becht. He calls Becht "a step up from ANYTHING we had this year". Very interesting
I think that’s somewhat unfair. I would say he’s the closest qb to Trace out there. Can run when needed. Can throw down field. But is an athlete more than a classic drop back passer. Tough too.You seem to be in the know a lot more than me.
As an Iowa state grad I follow the Clones. Rocco is what I describe as a game manager. With that stated he has had some games where a he just wasn’t on his best game. Jmho.
Why would he go with Franklin? James never played him.Do we know even that Grunk is not going to follow Franklin to VTech? Do they have a QB? If so, with Obrien and Franklin there, Grunk is likely more at home there, Even so, if Grunk is not interested in sitting a year and learn the offense then he can leave. Becht gives Campbell the ability to potentially win next year, as he knows the offense intimately. There will also be QBs in the portal. For example, with Moore gone at Michigan PSU can circle back on Bourque. Also, Kroucher at Ole Miss may be looking after Kiffin left. Both are north east prospects for 2027
We have no idea what Grunk will do in a complete offense. At the moment he is a one read and run QB; he still needs a lot of development before he can run a complete offense. Or at least that is what he has shown.
And if not Becht, then PSU needs to go and get another QB for the portal to produce next year.
Mendoza at Cal wasn’t what he’s been this season.
Also, Becht would’ve been the best PSU qb if he had been on the 2025 roster; he’s a good college qb who plays with a lot of heart and poise. He’s also shown himself to be a leader, which our previous starter was not.
Injured on either a designed QB running play or a forced scramble. How would becht have been in franklin's offense with AK and O'Brien?

Help me with the part where Grunk’s numbers were on par with Becht’s 2025 numbers despite Grunk being woefully worse on film. With nearly identical YPA, but Grunk having a higher completion percentage, the young guy basically has same mean/lower variance. Becht had better seasons.
I think this would be a mistake. If you look at his game stays, its nothing special and a lot of duds. Id keep Grunk and hope for improvement.View attachment 1066474
Not confirmed…just interweb fodder.

I think besides Terry Smith, Grunk is the person most responsible for saving this season for Penn State, albeit a redshirt freshman.Forgive me for forgetting the link, but his latest clip is all about Rocco Becht. He calls Becht "a step up from ANYTHING we had this year". Very interesting
I watched the video and he definitely seemed to be an upgrade from what we had this year.I highly recommend everyone go watch Tengwall’s video and listen to the analysis.
Nothing against Grunk or Allar, Becht is better than anything Penn State has on the current roster.
Campbell needs to get Becht to Happy Valley as soon as possible. Next, get that man some WRs.
Exactly.Yeah, this. Haven’t seen a PSU QB take noticeable, positively progressive “steps” week over week like Grunk in…well…I honestly don’t know when. Rocco may be a better play in 2026 but I don’t think it’s worth a 3.5m payday when Grunk has shown us the ability to improve like he has.
Grunk played 6 games. His first 3 starts were against top 5 defenses Becht is a 3 year starter (who I might add has never faced a defense as good as OSU this year in his entire career). As I said before, I get Campbell would want his guy here, but I think $3.5 million would be a lot especially if it results in Grunk leaving.Help me with the part where Grunk’s numbers were on par with Becht’s 2025 numbers despite Grunk being woefully worse on film. Excuse me for doing what others do on this board: express my opinion. So you've given the new coach 3 days before second guessing him, on a situation that hasn't yet come to pass.
What a know-it-all.
Was he not good? Didn't he start as a freshman? He's simply a marginal ex-OL
3 days shows that we, as a board, are slowing down in our old age.So you've given the new coach 3 days before second guessing him, on a situation that hasn't yet come to pass.

Certainly you can express your opinion. Royboy is simply pointing out that your opinion seems to be doubting Campbell within a few days of his hire. Which is OK too. For me, I will give Campbell some lattitude until he makes a decision that fails.Excuse me for doing what others do on this board: express my opinion.
He has was outstanding and at the time of his injuries that forced him to retire from football, it was considered an enormous loss. Was he not good? Didn't he start as a freshman?
I agree completely. Looked at objectively he is much better off staying at PSU. My reservations come from his relationship to the previous staff. Having said that, not even sure whether Franklin takes him.Ask yourself this question, and I am not trying to be mean: If he portals out right now, other than Virginia Tech(not a top 25 program anyway), which top 25 team will he come in at, as the starter next year?
Campbell is one of the best head coaches in America and I can promise he will have the opportunity to compete for the job and win it if he is better than Becht. If he is not? Then he is the backup quarterback who is one play away from coming in to lead the offense as a red shirt soph with three years eligibility remaining.... again, Campbell knows him and recruited him in high school
But how would he have looked in Franklin's offense. It's hard to do an apples and oranges comparison. I hope he's the second coming.I watched the video and he definitely seemed to be an upgrade from what we had this year.
I am going to allow Campbell to do the enlightening; that is why they hired him. If he believes Becht gives PSU the best chance to win next year I am good. What I responded to was compensation. 3+m a year for a starter on a power four team is not crazy and is not reserved for the best, LaNorris Sellars and DJ Lagway both make north of 3m and neither has set the SEC on fire. Arch Manning is making 6.7m annually, Dylan Raiola and Underwood made 3m as entry level freshmen. And there many, many more examples of this. Having said that we do not even know how accurate the compensation number for Becht actually is.
This may all be moot, as it is unlikely Grunk sticks around with Danny and Ty going to VTech. They will run PSU's "offense" at VT so he will surely feel more comfortable there.
He is likely not. However, he has been with Campbell for three years, knows what Campbell wants out of his QB and can run Campbell's offense. This is not likely about potential; if this happens it is a one year stop gap measure to get a jump start on being competitive. But how would he have looked in Franklin's offense. It's hard to do an apples and oranges comparison. I hope he's the second coming.
I agree. Hope he comesHopefully Campbell can convince Thomalla to come to PSU....
Iowa State has landed its quarterback in the 2026 recruiting class. Four-star Nebraskan passer Jett Thomalla has committed to the Cyclones he announced on Friday.
Thomalla is the latest Nebraskan to commit to the Cyclones in the 2026 class joining recent additions Barry Fries, Tyrell Chatman and Keian Kaiser. He joins his Millard South teammate Amarion Jackson in Iowa State’s 2026 class.
The Cyclones earn Thomalla’s commitment over interest from numerous schools, including a recent visit to Ohio State, rival Iowa and Missouri. The Tigers were also among Thomalla’s final five schools.
Thomalla is the first four-star prospect to join Iowa State’s 2026 recruiting class, and he immediately becomes the crown jewel for head coach Matt Campbell, quarterbacks coach Jake Waters and personnel director Derek Hoodjer.
Why it matters: Traditionally, schools like to take one quarterback per recruiting class. Iowa State is no different after taking Connor Moberly in the 2024 class and signing Alex Manske in the 2025 class. Moberly is now the team's backup quarterback and Manske is recovering from a partially torn UCL in his right elbow but he enrolled in classes at Iowa State in January. Thomalla's commitment gives Iowa State its latest quarterback to build an offensive game plan and scheme around, and he comes with good pedigree and is a significant recruiting win for Iowa State.
What it means: Iowa State has landed another athletic quarterback. Thomalla's junior season tape shows a quality athlete. He makes plays with numerous arm angles and while on the run. He is a creative thrower of the football, finding unique ways to facilitate passing patterns for his targets downfield. He showed creative ability to move within the pocket and escape as a scrambler too. There are similarities between Thomalla's tape and what Manske showed during his junior season. Each quarterback si more of a passer than thrower, but they are capable of using their legs to make plays when necessary.
Even if Grunkemeyer stays, which I hope that he does, PSU still needs to bring in at least another competent qb. So, even if it's not Becht, it's going to be somebody else who needs to be a legitimate threat to be the starter next season. If that causes players to transfer, then too bad; the staff then just will have to bring in multiple transfer qbs.He is likely not. However, he has been with Campbell for three years, knows what Campbell wants out of his QB and can run Campbell's offense. This is not likely about potential; if this happens it is a one year stop gap measure to get a jump start on being competitive.
The dollar figure reported is likely inaccurate; having said that, QBs demand top dollar as transfers these days. Beck whose last year at Alabama was a disaster and he was paid anywhere between 3 and 4m for this year, with varying results.
Anyway this goes, people need to be prepared for sticker shock. Getting a capable (not great) QB will cost a lot of money. You simply can't bank on Grunk next year. He is talented, but needs more time,.
Exaggerating slightly but a 4 star from Nebraska is like an 8 star from Texas.Hopefully Campbell can convince Thomalla to come to PSU....

And to be fair he is now committed to Alabama not ISU. Campbell would have to pull him out of Bama, although if their coach leaves for Michigan that might become much easier.Exaggerating slightly but a 4 star from Nebraska is like an 8 star from Texas.
I think back to how good Cooper Dejean was in college and how he’s an immediate impact starter in the NFL. He had great high school tapes, but still was only a low 3 star and the 88th player at his position. Switch his high school from a tiny town in Iowa to, say, Belle Glade, FL or Westlake, TX and watch that rating soar
That's just crazy talk. This board is no place for common sense.it is sensible for Campbell to want Necht for one more year, convince Grunk to stay and develop Grunk and Falzone for their system. Grunk is still
young and Falzone will be a freshman. Get some great portal OL and WRs and go from there.

At how many other Power 4 schools would he be a guaranteed starter? I don't want players who believe that they are entitled to be starters; that's one of the reasons why we just had a 6-6 season. If he transfers, my guess is it would be to a lower level of football. If he would transfer to another Power 4 school, he'd be in the same situation as he is at PSU and probably worse. Let's face it, we're most likely not talking about a Julian Sayin here.Grunk isn't going to stay if he's not the starter next year...
It's 2025, if a QB isn't the starter or a freshman redshirting, they're transferring.
Franklin's offense was very offensive this year. But how would he have looked in Franklin's offense. It's hard to do an apples and oranges comparison. I hope he's the second coming.
