Asset forfeiture by police should anger more people, but like most things unless it happens to them either they aren't paying attention or just don't care. Another example of government overreach, when a crime just has to be 'allegedly' committed for assets to be taken. To me, just like a conviction, the government should have a burden of proof to be able to steal from its citizens.
-this is why the government and its powers should be as limited as possible.
This is my only hang up with the police. Asset forfeiture is absolutely legal theft.
"hey there buddy, what's that $1000 bucks doing in your wallet? Looks like it plans to commit a crime. I'm afraid that money has to go to me and it will be charged with intent"
Communities across the country are doing this, as well as other scams, but I can't really blame the police. We demand results from law enforcement and, if you give a guy a hammer, he's going to hit stuff. Blame your legislators for this. Blame your city council even.
The stories that piss me off are the towns converting library fines, parking tickets, and zoning fines into arrest warrants. There are towns holding thousands of warrants that use traffic stops and road blocks to create revenue. That library book you took back late 5 years ago could cost a couple of grand now.

I'm a cash guy, I usually have a few hundred, but who drives around with $22,000? If you don't won't your assets forfeited be a little smarter protecting them.

A young guy had 12,000 taken off him at an airport in Kentucky because they said his luggage smelled of Marijuana. It was his life savings and it took him two years to get it back.
Some Indian Immigrant was driving through Tennessee with 300 k to buy a business. His money was kept and after a couple of years he got 280 k or so back.

The report said one ounce, never mentioned the cash or gun. They straight up stole his property and he wasn't going to court and be like "Excuse me, your honor, I actually had more pot, some cash and a gun, too!!"
Throwing adults in jail for possessing an illegal piece of plant matter is my biggest beef.
That and "we've investigated ourselves and found ourselves completely free of any wrongdoing even though we're on video kicking the **** out of a dude in handcuffs because he said mean things to us. Don't worry, the officers involved got two weeks paid vacation. That'll show em. Nothing to see here," type situation.

It doesn't really equate but I renewed my tags at the clerks office today but I didn't have the registration for my wife's car. I had everything else but they wanted me to sign a form to basically incriminate myself in the event I was lying and charge a $5 fee to print a copy of the registration. I looked at my dad and basically said "county govt is no different than a bank".
My first thought was a drug dealer. I'm not going to condone what that cop did, but when you do bad things there are consequences. I've been there and done that. Don't have a t-shirt though, just the memories. Well actually I do have a Boulder County jail T, but I don't wear it, just use it as a reminder not to make the same mistakes again.

There is a really cool new thing called PayPal that works well with eBay. Surprisingly you can use it for virtually any transaction IF the other party has it as well.
The issue here is our rights under the 4th amendment to the constitution of the US of A. The government can not just take our property without due process. The notion that the cop may have assumed that was drug money is irrelevant.
It amazes me when a story like this doesn't draw outrage from 100% of Americans. Instead we get folks that question the victims actions. It boggles my mind.
Cocaine cowboys on I-40 in Tennessee did this for years to out if State travelers. Stopped doing it after stopping a Lawyer going on vacation with his family and the hell he raised because of it.
