Terrible IHSA decision goes in place next season

Curious what the punishment would be for breaking this (one would assume it would have to be forfeit of varsity game to make it enforceable but if initial participation is on Friday in varsity game and illegal participation is Saturday how can they go back to the legal participation on Friday and issue a forfeit? No ones going to care if the punishment is forfeiting sub varsity games)... also who is going to ensure and guarantee accurate tracking? Some teams may get away with it while others under the microscope may get dinged if there is a violation. Would they consider an exemption for specialists? For example, a kid is a sophomore and the best option for the varsity as the kicker or long snapper and then would play a full-time position like lineman or linebacker or DB or whatever in the Sophomore or JV game.

Can’t wait to hear the outcry from losing coaches/parents when a team loses 100-7 even with the running clock because the varsity can’t come out in the 2nd or 3rd quarter due to not wanting to waste the eligibility of the back ups who want to play the next day in a sub varsity game....

Or the winning team when the star QB has his ACL torn or suffers a concussion late in a blow out because they stayed in the game.

There should be nearly universal agreement on this among coaches and administrators and they should tell the IHSA they aren’t taking the field next year until this abhorrent rule is repealled or significantly modified to work.

The IHSA will assign ankle bracelets to all football players for accurate tracking.

RIP JV football. Welcome back Soph football. Well more likely two levels at most schools going forward.

Can not play back to back days. If JV game is on Monday, they can't practice on Tuesday.

Would kids be able to be part of non contact aspects of practice the day after a game? If you have a Friday playoff game would they be able to run and watch film on Saturday with the team? Can they be a part of walk throughs?

This is a DISASTER for the JV kids. Coaches need those backups ready for a varsity game for injuries and blowouts. But, those kids need a full game of development and losing the JV game is where that happens. In alot of 6A schools and down, they won't have enough kids to play a JV game if the eliminate anyone who played a single snap at Varsity.

Fields, fields with lights, players, coaches, officials . . . they can all appear at any time, day or night. Just schedule whenever.

Also, nothing is more important than player safety. So if we can make sure the kids have the least amount of opportunities to engage in the sport, that is most safe. Not only is too much emphasis placed on winning, it's clear that too much emphasis is placed on playing.

The intent of the rule is good but the execution is terrible, I would rather see them use a play count. If you play over 10 plays you are dead for the next day. This would allow kids to play special teams or garage time and still be able to participate is Saturday morning JV games.

I agree... I know of several schools that use this exact formula. That way if the starting center loses his helmet during a play, and the back-up runs in for 1 play, he is still eligible for the JV game.

I think 10 plays is a very reasonable number and would allow kids who work hard for the full season (sometimes several seasons), to get a chance to play the game that they signed up for. This rule will cause kids to quit the game, or some to decide not to go out, bc there will no longer be JV games, and no reward for all of the hard work.

JV not only keeps kids participating, and "game ready" in case of injuries...it also helps coaches discover talent. A lot of kids get an opportunity to showcase their talent at JV games. I know of several kids at several schools this year who went from 3rd or even 4th string, to getting real playing time, or even starting in varsity games due to their performance in JV games.

This rule is going to further decimate teams that are already facing reduced numbers. I really hope this rule is re-visited and redone.
