Is Terry still with the team . You never hear his name mentioned nor see him on a game broadcast. Even before becoming interim head coach last year it seemed like he was quite visible .

Ya. I have a hunch we would have at least one more win, maybe even three more wins and be right in the Conference race if Kraft would have just kept Terry. Heck, we may have even had one of the best QBs and TEs in the Country.
With what players? If you think those guys were all staying you're nuts. There would be a very strong possibility we'd be worse---if thats even possible.

How often are assistants discussed? Our coordinators are very rarely discussed during a broadcast.

Had TS been named the HC coach earlier than MC was hired a lot of guys would have stayed and we would have imo a better recruiting class. Some would have stayed because they believed in TS and LOVED him. That said no one has a crystal ball or knows how that would have played out as of today. I will go out on a limb and say we would probably be better. That's not a knock-on MC he came into a terrible situation. It is now what it is and some people on this board have ventured into the land of revisionist history.

So now we dance wit da one dat brung us.

Actually it’s the numerous Kool Aid drinking fans on this board who claimed that playoffs were a possibility with the soft schedule and Campbell’s ability to “coach up” those 2 and 3 stars and turn them into world beaters who are engaging in revisionist history by claiming everyone “knew” this would be a rebuilding year.

Me from 10/29/25--I've been saying since 2024 that 2026 was going to be rough--we went all in for 2025
Let's enjoy the ride even if it's a bad year next year. 2026 was going to be rough regardless

The press said "soft schedule". Any good football fan, unlike yourself would know that.

enjoy the 7-5 season! you aint seen nothing yet! wait for the 2027 product on display. .. if you cant recruit at least your own state for top players, then the table is set.
7-5 is better than last year, in case you've forgotten
2027 will be reliant on the portal--if things aren't significantly moving in the right direction we'll have a new coach in 2029
That's all fine--Terry wasn't the answer and James proved he couldn't win a national title which is all that matters

Terry Smith is still here.

He is still here - and is the richest college football assistant coach (not head coach or coordinator) in history (by a lot)
Penn State Makes Terry Smith America’s Highest-Paid Non-Coordinator

Prior to Smith's contract, the highest paid assistant was a guy at Kentucky (forget his name) at around $1.3 Million per (who, IIRC, got fired when Will Sgtein took over at UK). Larry Johnson was also near the top - at a bit over $1 Million, with Ohio State.
That was as of 2025, IIRC - maybe some are a little higher than that now.

Smith's deal?
Somewhere in excess of $1.8 Million per year on a long-term guaranteed deal - So he not only topped the market - he absolutely destroyed all previous records (some sites listed the comp as around $2.5 Million/yr - but I think it was around $1.8 million, plus some bonus potential - so maybe $2 million-ish is a fairer figure?)
Even among Coordinators (and even head coaches not at premier programs) that was crazy batshit money.

Good for Smith - he is now a very very rich man.

Why was he paid such an absolutely absurd amount?

2 Reasons were supposed:
1) He would keep a good portion of the PSU roster and recruiting class on the reservation.
That, obviously, didn't happen - just the opposite in fact. Whether that was due to folks imagining some pull Smith would have that was never more than a fantasy - or MC came in and said "We don't want any of those guys" Who knows? But it sure a shooting didn't happen.

2) He (Smith) would be a "link to the past" that would keep fans/alumni engaged.
That - also obviously - didn't happen. LOL

I do think he (Smith) is a quite capable CB coach, FWIW.
I do think - in limited interactions/knowledge - that he is a good man (in general terms)

But that was an absolute batshit crazy deal for PSU Athletics to enter into. Obviously.
Completely batshit crazy.

SSDD
PSU - at all levels and departments - leads the galaxy in the volume of batshit stupid stuff done.
Obviously.

He's alive, well and still on the staff and position coach for the strongest position on the team.....the cornerbacks.

How surprised would one be if he VT bound?
His loyalty to PSU and Pennsylvania is much stronger than his loyalty to Franklin. And at this point in his career those loyalties outweigh the nominal increase in pay he'd receive to coach at VT. Trust me on this. My brother from Monroeville is a friend of the family.

Like you would know. With all due respect.
He doesn't know
He has an agenda which he's pushing hard
Of course it's possible that Smith would rather work for CJF than MC--we've all had bosses we've liked better than others but it's also equally as possible that he's still friends with CJF but prefers working with MC
Let's be honest--regardless of our professions we've all had people that we loved working with but were only "work friends" and people we love in real life but couldn't stand working with.

I just don't believe VT could make it worthwhile for Smith to make that move.

This is exactly correct. Three to four more wins to be precise had Kraft stopped to think for a moment and not let his stubbornness and emotions get the best of himself.
