Seems weird! Thad Matta had done a great Job at Ohio State with the exception of these last couple years. Maybe they thought they didn't see the program coming back anytime soon and thought maybe it was necessary to make a coaching change. Who knows. It will be interesting to see if Greg Paulus remains at Ohio State or not.

It seems like much has been made of Matta's Buckeye teams in the past pre season, but by and large I've felt they've underachieved.

That's a pretty good job that has opened. I would think there's some pretty sharp young coaches out there at a division 1 school that would want to make a move up to a major school like OSU. It's been a long time since their last natty and I know football is king but it is also at other schools. Look for them to get a good coach. Tony Bennett maybe or is he dug in at UVA. Whoever gets the job it's pretty much a total rebuild. OFC

With the amount of money OSU has, I'd consider it a top 10ish (probably in the 10-15 range) of basketball head coaching jobs. Yes, I'm aware it's a football school. However OSU has an insane athletic budget and is located in a very talent-rich basketball area.

A few more of the articles I've read seem to suggest this wasn't about his coaching so much as it was about his recruiting. They've just dropped off the map recruiting the last few years and have missed on kids many feel as though they should have landed.

One of the old adages we hear a lot is "so and so is an average coach and needs big-time talent to win".....well, that's the deal for every coach. I mean, 2010 was hardly the most talented bunch of players K has coached, but they were still incredibly talented. Matta proved he could coach when he had talent....the problem was he wasn't landing talented players consistently, especially by OSU's standards.

Of course I am predjudiced, but just going by Matta's track record I see a Wojo or Collins getting MORE out of LESSER talent than him.

Most anybody could have coached his first few teams at OSU.

Coaching covers a whole lot more than just practices and games, many people forget that. Heck games and practices is about or perhaps the easiest tasks of a HC.

He was ok, nothing to write home about, again in my opinion.

I expect Greg to get an interview, but I don't expect him to land the job.

"Ok, nothing to write home about," says it quite well....OFC

Seems crap for the AD to do this now...IE after all of the other vacancies have been filled. He virtually guarantees Matta will be out of work in CBB at least for One full season... Give the man the opportunity to shop his trade to other schools during the silly season, not when everyone has already come to terms with new coaches

I agree the timing is suspicious, or just bad.

But, rumors had been going for 2-3 years now he might retire due to health reasons.

His foot, knee, legs, something......

It had everything to do with his recruitment. He also could not keep players long term. There were too many transfers the last 3 years. ADs pay attention to the reasons you are only getting 3 and 4 star recruits, then they leave.

Not landing MJ Walker was the final straw. Other than poaching Speice Indy Heata few times, Matta has been pretty average on the recruiting trail, and his coaching success doesn't outweigh it.

Missing out on Luke killed him with alumni too. The man probably needs to relax. He's 49 and looks 60. Get some rest.

Picking gum off the floor and putting it back in your mouth can't be good either.

No, but Matta has had some pretty scary health issues in the past. For his benefit, some time off might do him wonders. He'll coach again.

One the of the articles mentioned his age and I could've sworn it was a typo. The guy needs to do something for himself. He looks terrible.

I am sure he can get a job doing color at ESPN. Just show disdain for Duke and praise the heck out of the 'Holes....

I am hardly surprised by this move, seemed like it was a long time coming, but I did think he was a very solid coach. Clearly the lack of recruiting success caught up to him.

Unfortunately recruiting has become a huge component OF COACHING OVERALL. Just ask former NCSU FB head coach Tom O'Brien......OFC
