I think James will do well at VT in year 1, because it will basically be the Nittany Hokies (or Blue Ridge Lions?) vs. the ACC.
They will be a factor in the ACC in 2026, imo. They'll likely take a loss or two, but they'll be in it.

After that, it will depend on Fla. State and Clemson bouncing back to their usual selves, and Miami continuing to rise, and side-stepping ND in a conference game.... If all that, then they may settle in to the same CJF ceiling as we've witnessed in the B1G. But, those teams aren't the collective equivalent of Ohio State, Oregon, and the weaselrines. Imo.
Assuming the composition of the ACC remains as it is now (not a sure thing), I do expect VT to be back in that upper group (regularly among top 4 or 5 teams, ACC title contention) within the ACC relatively soon. No reason why they shouldn't be, IMO.
But I do think it will take a bit longer than "2026" for that to happen. (former)HCJF inherits a not very good roster. Barring huge effective portal impact (and that has never really been a HCJF thing/strength) I expect a few years before things return to upper-tier outcomes for VT in the ACC.

And: a gentle reminder. Be mindful of how you set up commas. For example, “Lion Jim, who loves nothing more than jabbering about mathematics and grammar, says to be mindful of how you set up commas.”
Under your consultation and guidance, please let there be laws and appropriate punishments* passed for irritatingly awful grammar and punctuation abuses, such as we see all too often with apostrophes. (There are too many more types of abuses in these categories to get into here).

*Suggestion: Whacking of knuckles with bigass 18-inch wooden rulers for the first offense. :)

Actually, modern grammar guides and style manuals like Chicago and AP, as well as most linguists, agree that beginning a sentence with a coordinating conjunction is acceptable and often stylistically effective.

And?

He never beats teams with more or the same talent so Miami and Clemson beat him every year. FSU will start beating him when they get it turned around. Sprinkle in the other loss here and there and he never goes to the playoff. He will elevate Va Tech but he ain't winning a NC and quite possibly never even sniffs a playoff berth. Eventually they will catch on after his obligatory crap season of 7-5 or 6-6 and they will show him the door.
Miami and Clemson won’t beat him every year and neither will FSU.

He's not beating them if they have the same talent. The best predictor of an employee's performance is their past performance. He is not good enough to win close games where both teams are evenly matched. How much of a sample size do you need? He may be like a blind squirrel and once every ten years pulls off the win like he did at PSU vs OSU then squeak into the playoff only to lose in the first rd after all the Hokies fans hopes are high.
So making the playoffs and losing in the first round is not a past performance of his yet you’re using it as a predictor…not a very good hiring manager are you?

That’s how I describe him too. Not a bad coach or terrible. Average. If he were still 40 and in year 3 I’d even have a different opinion on keeping him possibly.

But it’s clear he has his stripes that aren’t changing.
If he was an average coach there wouldn’t be all those teams with less talent for him to beat…average coaches recruit average teams.

To clarify...in the post prior to Donald's, I was saying that I found him to be an average "in game" coach...better than many thought (he embraced analytics and used them in a lot of correct spots that blew people's minds that haven't caught up yet), but also struggled with time management at the end of halves (though UCLA wasn't as bad as some thought) and decisions on when to punt/go for it (as well as play calling on 3rd downs when going for it was in play).

Yeah. I’ll add that I echo this but think his decisions at UCLA were terrible end of half, and simply bad end of game.

I do think he did things well, but balanced out with the things he did unwell, it made him an overall average coach. Not bad, not great. I think he got out of the program about what the average division 1 coach would over 12 years.

These are the only guys as bad as Franklin. So basically anyone we are after will be an improvement …please keep up , Skippy.

Exactly, these butt-hurt dorks are amusing - after the way Franklin was treated after the NW game and then by Krafty The Clown, these idiots expect him to praise PSU at what is essentially a welcoming party at his new school??? Really??? LMAO, that the a-holes on this board would act in this manner.... we sure do have a lot of a-holes on this board who are not only uncredentialed, self-proclaimed uber football geniuses and experts, but also raging hypocrites. Real charmers.
You mean held accountable?

That will come soon. in year 2 or 3 there will be some big openings someplace and his agent will float his name to the media, like when the USC job opened a while back. He'll make VT scared and they will renegotiate
There are lots of big openings NOW! Yet this is where BGJ lands? Says all that needs to be said.

But this circus and sh*tshow was completely necessary and gave PSU huge advantages on their new coaching hire (what these advantages are, only Krafty The Clown knows).... don't you know?

You might want to seek treatment for your FDS, it’s completely out of hand. Do you have a Franklin doll at home that you constantly poke with needles? Good lord you need a new hobby, Skippy.

So basically you’re saying he got fired for two games..got it. That’s a great reason to fire someone.
Well, CJF did accomplish something no other coach in history did…lose back to back games to teams he was a 20+ favorite over.

So I guess he deserves credit for that.

You probably set the line. The next coach will lose as an underdog.

You went from complaining about bad wins with Franklin to praising good losses with smith. Bet you don't predict any national championships with the next coach.

Boy he must have been tired out there playing both offense and defense against 11 guys from the other team. No wonder we lost.
