Without your brilliant foresight to give Stoops a $15.5 million buyout before he'd done anything even halfway impressive, Alabama and Ohio State would be knocking down his door tonight to hire him away.

Instead we can rest easy tonight -- and for the next two years.

This is why we love you Mitch.

He hired Billy Gillispie. He hired Joker Phillips. He hired Mark Stoops. He passed once on Cal and had to be forced into hiring him the second time.

Seriously is there an ad in the country with a worse resume in hiring for the major revenue sports?

thinking about it all wrong....

look at the money mitch had to put out in order to get a coach like stoops to come here. you either do that or go dumpster diving at howard or something for a coach and just pay them minimum. but then you signal to everyone that football doesnt matter

You are correct about the Billy and Joker hires but the "forced to hire Cal" remark is an Internet rumor, Nike Pratt has debunked that himself and he was in on the hiring interviews.

is this the same mike leach that is currently losing to FCS eastern washington and went 3-9 just 2 years ago?

but you are right...he would kill it here because deep down...uk is a hidden gem of football just waiting to be discovered.

You honestly think Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg is a better job than coaching in Lexington with the resources to build the facilities UK just built? And they managed to hire a coach who isn't as brain dead as Mark Stoops. Remind me of what exactly he'd done before he was hired and given that god awful buyout? Ridden the coattails of quality head coaches at FSU. Period.

you make it sound like good coaches want to come here.

When you say, 'a coach like Stoops' what exactly do you mean? What had he done besides been the runt of the Stoops family litter and been a coordinator at a historically successful program run by dynamic head coaches who deserved the credit? He was no more of a 'get' than dozens of guys, and certainly not worthy of some huge buyout.

Look at Maryland and Randy Edsall. He'd actually had very good head coaching success at UConn. And Maryland is no more attractive than Kentucky. But be had a $500,000 buyout, and when it was clear he wasn't getting it done, he was fired -- in October of year 5. When Stoops hits that point, dragging a huge legacy of failure behind him, it'll cost $12 million to fire him. Thanks Mitch. You idiot.

says a uk fan....

Of course Pratt has debunked it. He's a good company man.

I have a daughter at Maryland and attend lots of their games. Their facilities are no where near as good as Kentucky's. You think they just spent $45 million on the program? They have no special football legacy really. They don't draw as well as Kentucky. High school football is no better than in Kentucky, and they are hemmed in by Penn State, West Virginia and other better programs for recruits. They're a Big-10 doormat right now with zero profile in that conference. And nobody around here cares for anything but the Redskins.

So, yeah, I repeat, they don't have more to offer than Kentucky.

no decent coach in their right mind is going to coach at a program that is so unwinnable like uk. it has little to do with facilities. purdue, psu, northwestern, nebraska, minny, etc..are all very winnable games. there is a decent path to success in the big 10 even if you suck. not uk...ever. you take this job because of money because you know you are going to fail and get fired and be screwed in your profession the rest of your life. it has to be worth it.

I am not usually on the hate Mitch bandwagon, but i am starting to wonder why he gets to make so many bad hires and still keep his job? We all know and accept the fact he has never really understood the fact that if you're in the SEC, you must take football serious or you need to find another school and conference. After so many bad hires, i think it is time for the man to step up and admit he has no clue what to look for when it comes to hiring people that know how to do their job at a high level. The man didn't even want to hire Cal as Kentucky basketball coach. That should tell you what this dude knows about sports in general. Only at Kentucky can you get a pay raise after sucking so bad at your job. Let's hope the man is left out when it's time to hire another coach for either sport. If he's allowed to make the hire, why even waste time and play the game? We all know odds are the guy this man hires has no clue what he is doing at his job. I don't think i have ever bashed Mitch in my posting career, but at this point, he has to understand how frustrating it is being a Kentucky football fan and how crappy our future looks in the sport. Mitch, step down and let us get someone that knows what a winner looks like. It's obvious you only know what a loser can do for our sport.

We could play this all night. Historically. Penn State and Nebraska are easier wins than Vanderbilt and Mississippi State?

You are using deflection. The bottom line -- other programs in the same tier as Kentucky hire better coaches that Mark Stoops -- and more to the point, they don't get anchored to $15.5 million buyouts for a guy who WAS NEVER A HEAD COACH and had failed in his early efforts to be one.

i think we just disagree on what tier uk is actually on.

I'd hate to be Mark Stoops right now. The tongue lashing he's about to get from Mitch will be off the charts, let me tell you.

A swear word might slip out of his mouth tonight!

In terms of resources, prestige as an institution, conference affiliation and so on, would you place them above, below or equal to, Southern Mississippi? They managed to hire a competent coach and I'll bet he doesn't have a $15.5 million buyout

lol and i actually went to uk. lol

Why is Mitch allowed to keep making these wrong decisions that cost millions of dollars?

I don't think any other SEC football program would tolerate Mitch's expensive mistakes. We haven't been to a bowl game since 2011, yet Mitch gives massive raises and a contract extension to Stoops.
