Thanksgiving Meal - Report Card

Turkey - B- A little dry and skin was non existent. I like turkey a lot, so there’s a high floor for me.

Gravy - D+ Just ... no. I’ll take that over next year.

Mac n Cheese - apparently an A. Kids destroyed it.

Dressings - C. Dueling dressings. Neither won out. About half eaten. Little too experimental for my taste.

Cranberry - A. Straight out the can. The Steady Eddy of thanksgiving sides.

Rolls- B. No homemade this year. Sad!

Green beans - can’t grade them on NORMAL GRADE TYPE. They passed. One of my least favorite things to eat, but I always do to avoid disappointing Mom.

Crudités - A. Always a pleasure.

Sweet Potato Casserole- A+ I knock it out the park every year.

Desserts - A. She makes the best cake ever and nailed the pie. Ice cream and Rice Krispie Treats also.

A solid B overall. I’ll Probably volunteer turkey prep next year. Lack of Country ham was startling.

Turkey - B Tender and juicy but I've had better.

Ham - A+ just perfect.

Gravy - C+ nothing special

Dressings - B- good but unspectacular.

Cranberry - Incomplete. First year of my life we didn't have any. Not sure why.

Rolls- C. Had to settle for Kings Hawaiian this year.

Cornbread - A. Bacon and Jalapeno. It was straight fire but crispy and would wake you up.

Green beans - A. good and tender.

Baked beans - B. A little too sweet but good when they accidentally mixed with mashed taters.

Mashed taters - A. Very good peeled red taters.

Greens- A+. very flavorful and added a nice strong flavor to everything else

Desserts - A+. Tres Leches cake. The real thing.

A- overall. Missing a little bit this year but a nice bridge year to a better one next year.

Oh, only had 5 people over.

Turkey - A (got a smoked turkey from a place in town. It was superb)

Dressing - C ( Just pattied out some Stove Top and baked it)

Gravy - C (straight outta the jar)

Corn - A (wife made skillet corn)

Cowboy beans - A (love them, even with nothing else)

Mash taters - A (made them myself. Yukon Gold with plenty of butter & cream, salt & pepper. Made enough to have tater cakes on Saturday)

Rolls - C (store bought)

Dessert - A (SIL made us/me one of her Hershey Bar cakes. I would not want to be left alone in a room with an entire cake. They'd find me in a coma)

Lots of good mentions here but Hoss's mashed potato cakes idea is getting me. That was a leftover staple from my grandmother that I've missed. Tried bubble and squeak a couple of months ago at a restaurant (British mashed potato cakes with some leftover meat and vegetable mixed in) and am planning to try it myself, redneck style with country ham, green beans, and maybe corn.

Much different Thanksgiving this year...was just wife, kids and my parents. In laws backed out due to a covid scare at MIL work. Typically have way more selection...

Turkey- B+ (bought a Infrared oil free fryer)...did pretty good, flavorful but slightly over, a lot less cleanup and will definitely use again

Corn Pudding- A+, my grandmas recipe...make it multiple times during holidays and it is always a winner

Mashed Taters- A+, organic and wife knows how to make them right

Stuffing- A+, Moms recipe...I dont even like stuffing and I like hers

Carrots- A+, Wifes recipe, organic carrots....staple ever year

Sweet Potato Casserole- A+, kids devoured it

Pumpkin Pie- A+, Homeade top to bottom

Apple Streduel Carmel Pie- B, bought it from a local restaurant...flavorful but a bit too sweet for my liking and a mess

Rolls- A, bought from same restaurant as pie, they were great

Learned that from my mamaw too. I'm going to add some finely chopped onion and a little cheese and fry in the cast arn (iron) skillet with bacon grease.

Man I do bacon wrap mushrooms on the grill often.I cooked the bacon in the microwave a bit so it crisp up on the grill,if not it takes two hours for a few skews.When the look ready glaze them with sum good sauce,Famous Dave's Devils Spit brings the heat.Everyone luvs them.

My MIL's stuffing is world class, but this year the onions tasted like she chopped them up and threw them after she cooked it. 2020 man. Just can't win.

Turkey - A
Stuffing - C- (See above - still good, but compared to usual not the same)
Gravy - A+ (Star of the meal this year)
Cranberry Sauce - A
Mashed Potatoes - A
Green Beans - A
Rolls - D+ (Just store bought, whatever)
Wine - A

Ran 7.5 miles
Walked another 3
Rode the bike 5

I'm up like 10 lbs since Labor Day. Haven't missed a single day of working out. I think there is something with my food intake. Ha!

Green Beans- A+, my Aunt makes the best
Mashed Potatoes- D-, Not sure who brought it, but they were terrible. Would get an F if it wasn't family.
Cranberries- A+, hard to mess up the goodness straight from the can
Brocolli Casserole- B, could've been warmed up
Stuffing- C, was alright, too much onions for my liking though.
Cherry cheesecake- A+, I have no words. My grandma always knocks this out of the park.

Man can't beat some good tater cakes. My mom was expert on them, wife is good but not like mom's.

Turkey- B. It was the first turkey I’ve cooked in about a decade but turned out pretty good.

Honey Baked Ham- A always good

Green Bean casserole- B always good but pretty standard

Mac and Cheese- A+

Dressing- A

Apple Pie- A++. Wife made a homemade with Granny Smith apples

Pumpkin Pie- A++. My daughter made my grandmothers recipe

Filet Mignon probably best I’ve ever grilled. Baked Beans, baked potato, green salad, fruit salad.

A - with negatives being no sweet potato casserole and no left over turkey for sandwiches.

I love steak but you guys that grill steak on Thanksgiving I just don't get that? Wouldn't be Thanksgiving-lyish enough. Like putting up a cherry tree on Christmas or spelunking on the 4th of July. Just doesn't fit tradition and traditions are important to reinforce.

COUNTERPOINT: turkey actually kind of sucks, even when done well. I fully support non-traditional Thanksgiving meals.
