I feel a bit bad for Kaepernick in that he is badly misplaying this. As an NFL player he had both (a) a big stage and (b) access to a big income. He is giving both of those away which is going to make it harder for him to promote whatever he wants to promote.

Life marches on. The next NFL season will start in two months and when it does there will be new story after new story. Kaepernick will gradually become less relevant. Once he's out of the league the only reason to report on him will be stories like this and eventually people will say "Who cares?" People care when you're in the NFL, whether you do good or bad.

He was a guy who owes his success in part to the fact that he was born and raised in America.

That's true. And if he wants to highlight some causes along the way then being famous from football is an opportunity, although personally I don't like when players do that stuff because one reason I'm watching football is to get away from politics. But regardless, using your fame and money from football can be used for other things but only if you have it. Kaepernick is giving his away. He made a big splash last year but unless he plays nice with the NFL and gets back in the game it's going to be much harder from here on out for him to highlight whatever cause he might be interested in.

Today it's reported that he went to Ghana and did X, Y and Z. If he's not in the NFL in the next five years and then he goes to Ghana again it's not going to be reported. Nobody will care. For people to be interested in you you have to make them be interested.
