On June 3, 1861 the Battle of Philippi hit West Virginia during the Civil War.

The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, under the command of General Robert E. Lee, had been thwarting attempts by Union troops to take the Confederate capital of Richmond.

And the Western Virginia Company of 1961 secured control of its western countries, which later became part of West Virginia, during the Civil War.

The Battle of Philippi was the first land battle of the Civil War.

Major General George McClellan, commanding the Department of the Ohio, marched from Grafton to defeat the Confederate troops of Colonel George Porterfield. In July McClellan won the Battle of Rich Mountain and was promoted to General of the Army of the Potomac.

At 1 p.m. Sunday the Richmond Spiders and the West Virginia Mountaineers will engage in the Battle of Morgantown in the WVU Coliseum. ESPN will televise the battle. The WVU troops will be led by their commander, Bob Huggins. The Richmond combatants will be led by Chris Mooney, who in 2005 took over the role once held in 1997-2002 by John Beilein, who left Richmond to switch sides and command the West Virginia troops.

Appropriately, Beilein is a graduate of Jesuit College in Wheeling, the first capital of West Virginia. Later, Charleston became the capital.

WVU is a 7.5-point favorite. The Mountaineers are ranked #11 nationally. The Spiders are #19. WVU is 5-1, losing by 5 points to #1 Gonzaga. Richmond is 4-0. The Spiders came from behind in the final two minutes to beat Wolford and trailed Northern Iowa by 10 points before coming from behind again to win.

The Spiders rely on forcing turnovers with Jacob Gilyard third nationally with 4.2 steals per game. Gilyard also has 28 assists.

Guard Nick Sherod will be not available for WVU. He’s on the injury report list.
