I may get some flack for this, but even I'll admit to sort of being in a coma with this team. I can't recall ever having missed watching this many games since first becoming a Duke fan two decades ago. I didn't watch the game the other night because I literally just forgot we were playing.

I don't know why that is. I'm sure part of it is because I'm a bit more busy than usual right now. But there is just something - I honestly don't know what - that has me kind of sleeping on this team and I'm just not able to get as pumped as I've always been for every team prior. It's not a knock against them (at least I don't mean for it to be), but just kind of where I am right now.

We aren’t being disrespected. We just watched the most fascinating player, maybe ever, play last season. Plus, the two teams prior had some elite freshmen too.
Maybe this season washes out, in terms of hype. The last couple received enough to offset what this one may not be getting.
This team is good, and everyone knows it. There just isn’t a dominant kid this year. But there are a lot of decent teams, and we are one of them.

Does it have anything to do with the loss to SFA I wonder. It was a disappointing loss to say the least. If we had beaten them and still be ranked #1 would we be even having this discussion ? OFC

Lets get this straight, with Wiseman gone, Carey is the best freshman playing college basketball, IMO he's better than a healthy Cole Anthony. Does Carey have the NBA superstar ceiling that some others have?? Probably not, but who really cares.

Stewart is really really good, there is no denying that. He almost came to Duke, and Matthew Hurt probably would have gone to Kansas.
Stewart is a better player right now than Hurt, and is definitely a better NBA prospect.
The question is would Duke be better with Stewart instead of Hurt?? Stewart would probably take some away from what Vernon can do inside. And our spacing wouldn't be as great. But we would be a DOMINANT rebounding team, and our biggest weakness IMO (interior defense) would become a massive strength.

I think as of right now the answer is yes Duke would be much scarier with Stewart. But if Matthew can put on some more muscle and transform his game by March, I love his fit with Big Vern.

Stewart is good but it’s gonna take more then one player this year in college to take a team the distance .

Duke has yet to see Moore play his best in a combo of games but Baker and Goldwire have stepped up and Hurt needs muscle. Build off of the beginning of the season to now and Duke is as good as anybody. By the way Carey is doing a great job holding his own down low. The better Duke shoots the more the floor will open up for him.

This goes for college basketball in general for me. The players aren’t typically around long enough to invest in. My interest is nowhere near the same as it was in the 2000s.

I guess I'm the odd duck then. I love this team, and I''m really enjoying watching them play. To me, the team play without all the iso stuff is more like Duke ball in the 80's and 90's. They play hard, and they play good defense. The 3 point shooting is coming around, and K has many parts to plug and play between better defense, or better offense, or a blend of both. Options, plenty of them.

Joey Buckets is becoming a flamethrower, Matthew Hurt is totally capable of having big games, Tre is becoming a legit threat to score besides his great play making and defense. Vernon, well, he's just terrific, and Jack is playing so well. JGold is becoming indispensable with his offense improving every game, and his defense such a weapon, especially alongside Tre.
Javin has always showed snippets of being very good, but now he seems to be more comfortable and consistent. Ca$h was money before the injury, but he's not back into the swing yet...it's coming though. Moore can be amazing at times, just needs to be consistent and under control a little more. Justin Robinson can make huge blocks, and can light it up from 3, so he's able to give us some good minutes. And now we're to the Slim Reaper...if he gets a little more consistent then lookout, 'cause we've got a ton of great parts on this team already.

And that SFA game...that was the 7th game of the season with a young team that lost a shitload of talent, points, and rebounds from last year. I don't like to lose, but I honestly believe that loss will end up being more valuable for this team than if we had pulled out the W. That was a hard earned lesson that will pay dividends down the road imo.

Damn, I'm pumped already, and can't wait to see our Blue Devils play Saturday.
Go Duke!

I dunno, Big Vern is pretty damn dominant. Is he as explosive as some of our other freshman bigs? No, but he’s consistent as all get out and putting up Jah like numbers, on a team with 5 legit other scorers. Also, outside of the SFA game, as team, we’ve been pretty damn dominant.

I’m with Dirt. I’m enjoying the hell out of this team. Reminds me a lot of the old Duke teams where there isn’t a couple superstars that people tend to stand around and watch. This seems more like a “team” to me. The chemistry seems to be there, and as someone else mentioned, reminds me a lot of 2010. I’m gonna enjoy this ride and not worry about who’s leaving, who’s coming back, or where they are projected in the lasted mock draft.

Like MPM277 said about getting flack for his statement, I might get some but thats life if I do. I think it has much to do with not winning the NCAA Tourneyment the last few years with all of the incredible talent we've had and especially last season. We just can't seem to get last win of the season and its tempered some expectations. Not just Duke but a few other teams also. Enough of the one and done era for me. I hope this season gets us what we all want.

Dirt here's another "odd duck" then! Love watching this group, and agree these guys I think are the closest edition to K's vintage teams of yesteryear. Their emphasis on pressuring the ball is so refreshing, and that game Joey slapped on the floor at Cameron gave me chills! They also share the ball better than Duke teams of recent years! Great group, and I think K is really enjoying coaching this group, because they appear to really want to learn! OFC

I love this team and love their energy. They’re a joy to watch and i have no clue what I’m going to get from game to game.

For the fans that can’t get over the last season or that put all their eggs in the tournament basket every year, I’m not sure what to tell you, but I’m so sorry for you. I love the journey and the ride. I live and die on every shot, every game that I’m privileged enough to watch.

Duke and K aren’t perfect, they never will be. But compared to anywhere else or anyone else!? I’m the luckiest fan in the world. We’ve only got so much time to watch the best coach that’s ever lived do his thing, and i think it’s a crime that anyone would let last season or any season prior dictate my love for the...NEXT PLAY.

LFG! Go Duke!

I think last year specifically soured some people. It soured me for weeks....hell, maybe months. Both 2017 and 2018 stunk, but we clearly had questionable cohesion those seasons. Last year is the one that ‘slipped’ away, IMO.

As for this season, I’m loving it like I do every year. There are going to be more growing pains and some head scratchers, but the ride is always fun. And with conference play ‘officially’ starting Tuesday the excitement just ramps up more.

Yeah, I loved Zion as much as anyone, and I made more pics, gifs, and vids of him than anyone ever before. There won't be another one like him, but he's gone from Duke now.

What is funny is that the team we have now is what many guys have been clamoring for the last few years...a throwback team of sorts, with solid defense, and good bench play. Even though we have a young team, we actually have some solid veterans with good experience. This team has the ingredients to go a long way, but winning a natty is a very HARD thing to do...no matter how many 1st round draft picks you have. Sit back and enjoy the ride, because much more often than not it's not going to end with the ultimate satisfaction.

This is exactly how I feel. I’ve probably enjoyed this team as much as any team - at least since 2015. Last year started with great hype, but sputtered a bit with injuries.

I don’t know, the depth, the lack of a “superstar” (although Carey is close) I’ve enjoyed how this team has played.

I’d add that college basketball in general might have a bit of a Zion hangover. I did see something the other day where TV ratings for college basketball are down the first two months.
