This is the kinda stuff that makes it obvious no adults exist at unx. Alston Gardner is a tarhole BoT member. Nuthin' but the same ol' talkin' points and refusal to accept responsibility. Also, unx has done nothing to deserve the benefit of the doubt regarding any "changes" they CLAIM to have made. "Independent" review after "independent" review and ,somehow, athletics wasn't involved...until Wainstein. And even that was something of a whitewash. Tarhole arrogance. "We told ya how it is so move on." Sickening....

Re: unc scandal- Prongs etc - Graph of BBallers in AFAMscam

So, when Beezzzz's analytics data hit, it was sent to a few unc BOT members. Below is a reply from Alston Gardner. All the cliches. PLEASE HAVE AT IT!

------------------------------------------------------------

I am as disgusted with this whole affair as you are, but the press has not covered the extensive changes we have made in policy or personnel. If you want to learn about the specific policy changes, you can find the list of over 70 policy and process changes we have made at the following link Our Commitment: Taking Action and Moving Forward Together | A guide to review, response and reform at the University of North carolina at Chapel Hill

As for personnel, we have replaced most of the senior management team since 2012. The good news is that we significantly improved the quality of the management team in everyone of these positions.
Chancellor
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
Vice Chancellor of Human Resources
Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration
Vice Chancellor of Information Technology
Vice Chancellor of University Development
Vice Chancellor of Communications and Public Affairs
Vice Chancellor of Research
Chancellor's Chief of Staff
Secretary to the University
Athletic Director
Head Football Coach and the entire football staff
The entire compliance office in the Athletic Department
The entire academic support organization for Athletics
Senior Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education
Chairman of the Board of Trustees and five of 12 Trustees. Additionally, there will be an additional 4-5 new Trustees in May 2015.
Please note that not all of these positions were changed out were due to the academic scandal. Additionally we have the following pending resignations:
Vice Chancellor and General Counsel
Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences
We have exactly two senior executives who worked for the University in prior administrations, neither of which had any involvement in this affairs - the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs (hired in 2011) and Vice Chancellor of Medical Affairs who is also the CEO of unc Health Care.
I hope this helps you better understand the real situation.

Best regards,

Alston Gardner

James Moeser, Thorp's predecessor at unc-CH, advocated for Thorp to get the chancellor's job and thought he was the right person. At that point, athletics did not appear to be a problem at Chapel Hill, though.

"The one issue that I think he was ... not prepared to deal with was that one, the athletic one," Moeser said. "He had no experience."

First time Moeser's ever conceded athletic involvement? Thorpe...

"I work on the things that I really, really care about that relate to education. I have one boss, which is a lot fewer than I had at North Carolina."

Interesting hearing Holden reference all the people he had to answer to while at unx. Some holes considered him ( and others on the ACADEMIC side! ) to be responsible for the scam. The guy was a musician...a teacher...a chemist and a fanboy. His attachment to unx athletics was goin' to the games an' shakin' a pom-pom. He knew as much as tptb on the ATHLETIC side let 'im know. He was certainly involved in damage control. His participation in 18 years of academic fraud in the service of athletics was limited to blissful ignorance an' lookin' the other way.

Tarhole "Dare Ya To Lay a Hand on Us" arrogance at hits finest. Wouldn't self-impose in favor of a holiday trip to sunny Shreveport a couple of years ago and won't sanction themselves now either. Much LESS was known about unx's cheating back then too. Heck , even the U self-imposed 2 years on themselves. Not unx though. One big middle-finger to everyone. No discipline for felony-level vandalism no punishment for the worst scandal in NCAA history. Please GOD! nuke these cheating azzwipes back to the Stone Age. #carolinaway...

AD Cunningham: unc not considering declining bowl bid

After the season ended with a disappointing 35-7 loss against N.C. State on Saturday, North carolina is not considering the thought of declining a bowl bid, athletic director Bubba Cunningham said in a text message Sunday.

The question of whether the Tar Heels might consider declining an invitation to a bowl had been raised in recent weeks amid a mediocre season and the NCAA's continuing investigation into how athletes benefited from no-show paper classes in the African Studies department.

Schools under NCAA investigations sometimes self-impose a bowl ban to avoid further sanctions. Miami self-imposed two bowl bans in 2011 and 2012. unc's football program was sanctioned in 2012 after the original NCAA investigation into impermissible benefits and academic fraud.

Larry Fedora, the unc coach, has said this season that he's not concerned that the football program would be subject to additional sanctions resulting from the NCAA's reopening of the case. Had unc declined an invitation to a bowl game in 2011, it likely would have been eligible for the postseason in 2012, when by virtue of a tiebreaker it would have finished in first place in the ACC's Coastal Division.

Instead, though, the Tar Heels in 2011 played in the sparsely-attended Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., where they endured a lopsided defeat against Missouri. The next season, in 2012, unc stayed home while it would have played in the ACC championship game had it been eligible.

After finishing the regular season 6-6, a return to Shreveport is a possibility for this unc team

John Sauls: Can unc be redeemed?

Regarding Henry Gargan's Nov. 21 Point of View " What scandal stole from unc students": Gargan eloquently expresses the many profound truths around the universitiy's fall from grace and the crushing disillusionment that now infects us sons and daughters.

We have loved and believed in carolina for so long and fervently. carolina gave us so much. Now what? Is redemption possible, or do we continue to play the NCAA game, the public relations game, the denial game? It's hypocrisy.

The big-time college sports conversation must be revamped in such that we are telling the truth about who is being exploited ('used') and who is benefiting financially from that exploitation. We need to understand the nature of that exploitation (players being deprived of an academic education, serious injuries, etc). We need to acknowledge that playing big-time college football and basketball is incompatible with academic learning for too many would-be student-athletes. We need to change the system.

Redemption will take visionaries in the unc community, people who see the ethical fallacies in big-time college sports, and can correct the wrongs. carolina should invoke the ethical and leadership legacy of Bill Friday and Dean Smith and try again to lead the nation in the reformation of big-time college sports. That would be redemption.

Is the unc community up to the task? For starters, apologize to Mary Willingham.

JOHN SAULS

RALEIGH

1) Conceding his"long" and "fervent" belief in unx is very telling. Someone's been drinkin' the #carolinaway Kool-Aid for way too long. Why did it take 'im so long to see what everyone NOT wearing wuzz-blue truth-blockers to see?

2) "Visionaries in the unx community?!" Don't know whether to crap or go blind. Is that a bad joke? Who , exactly , are these "visionaries?" unx has plenty of insight into gaming NCAA eligibility for morons incapable of doing college-level work. The scumbags who initiated the systemic fraud? Are THOSE the "visionaries" he's referring to?

3) Dean was instrumental in the formation of AFAM at unx. His name and "ethical legacy" should never bump up against each other in the same sentence. Until unx'ers drop this child-like reverence for Deano and acknowledge his role in all this , they'll never BEGIN to seek redemption.

4) Mr. Sauls...while we appreciate the thought , forgive us if we don't trust the biggest scumbag cheaters ever , EVER! , to "lead the reformation" of any-damn-thing much less collegiate athletics. unx punted that right a long time ago. The fact that ya still believe the "flagship" is trustworthy of the gig speaks volumes. You've conceded a certain amount of unx's culpability. Congrats. Now you and your tarhole brethren get the eff outta the way an' let the adults handle it.

5) unx will suspend fball players who commit felonious vandalism and self-sanction one of their athletic programs before they ever apologize to Mary so , no...unx cannot be redeemed.

The 'something' that the athletic scandal stole from unc students

I can't speak for everyone at unc, but I have perceived a sense of loss among those, myself included, who grew up identifying first and foremost as Tar Heels - especially among those of us who matriculated through the university as students. There is anger that this identity, so precious to our conceptions of self, has been compromised by macro-level forces beyond our control. It would not be unfair to describe part of our response as an identity crisis.

Maybe we had it coming. Perhaps we ought not to have so closely bound our identities to a university...

... this stark reminder that the carolina experience is not as uniformly good as we would have hoped could jar others loose.

When I was younger, my understanding of right and wrong could have been explained in terms of what it meant to root for unc and what it meant to root for Duke. That same fundamentalism persists in the "carolina Way," an ideal borne of the desire to believe there is something about this place that compels the imperfect beings that comprise it to act better than they would otherwise.

I no longer believe this to be descriptive of my school.. But something has been lost, and it hasn't been easy. It's only fair to ask that bystanders to the fiasco keep this in mind.

Maybe if the tarhole nation hadn't lorded that holier-than-thou "carolina way" bs over rivals while cheating like bandits themselves , unx'ers would find more empathy from those not indoctrinated.

unx alum Bob Lee...

My mind was made up prior to high noon on Saturday. "Massacre Amid The Lofty Pines" simply reaffirmed my conclusion. For the following reason, I'm Out.... of the Fedora Fan Club

OMG.... BOBLEE IS GIVING UP ON LARRY FEDORA !!!

I do have a bit of a "rep" in certain circles over there but the Fat Cats sure don't like me and the Board Monkeys REALLY REALLY don't like me. The South Bldg admin crowd - Nope. Tiny Little Carol? Yeah, right! My decision will not swing any votes that matter.

Lets get this out-of-the-way. The Massacre Amid The Pines made the Little Big Horn look like a picnic-in-the-park. No excuse whatsoever for such a "Hands Up" surrender. Were the Folding Fedorians doing a Ferguson demonstration?

It was a Massacre...The Massacre is not why I'm Out as a Fedora guy. Losing, even losing to State, is not all that uncommon to any Tar Heel fan. Five In a Row was only three years ago.

Beating McNeese State or South Dakota A&M in Shreveport or Detroit or Birmingham won't save this roadkill season. Yes, I would forfeit the who-cares bowl and hope the NCAA notices... but that won't happen. The coaching staff get a 13th month bonus even if it's "Shreveport".

There is ZERO chance of Fedora being fired no matter how many Fat Cats / board monkeys are going nutz...I am simply withdrawing my personal support.

He won't get any credit for character-building. Good thing, huh?

Larry Fedora lost me over the Thug Trifecta of: Logo Stomp - Aloft-gate - LockerRoom Trash. He mumbled some wink-wink apology that an SID wrote for him, but in none of those three Thug Incidents did he seem to "give a ***t". His half-hearted "we win or lose with class" mumble after trashing the Duke Locker Room was IT for me. I'm Out.

Larry obviously does not agree with Col. (oops, Captain) Woodrow Call and BobLee about "abiding rude behavior". Thats Larry's right to not do so.

Of that Thug Trifecta, the only disciplinary action he took was with Aloft-gate when he suspended four thug-aletes for "the Liberty game". And THAT was only after three weeks and report of the thuggery leaked out. Suspending the perps for the Libery game was a version of the "find a walk-on to sacrifice" gambit. That Aloft-gate involved a walk-on was just a coincidence.

My opinion only matters to me. Everyone else in uncWorld probably doesn't mind thug-aletes.

He is not expecting the next round of crap coming down either.

You cannot win without TALENT and Thug-Talent is better than no talent as far as being competitive on the field. I get that logic. Letting his thug-aletes select the unis.... and letting his thug-aletes stomp the logo.... and letting his thug-aletes stomp the walk-on.... and letting his thug-aletes trash the Duke Locker Room keeps his thug-aletes happy, I suppose. If Larry keeps his current thug-aletes happy they won't say bad things about his program to the future thug-aletes he has to recruit. I appreciate that.

A handful of thugs is manageable. More than handful makes an embarrassing mess.... in my opinion. ..... Larry's "so what" attitude is where I have a real problem.

There is ZERO chance that either coaches or other adult staff were not totally aware of the locker room trashing as it was happening and before the team buses left The Wally. They knew but they didn't care. I care...

Florida State and North carolina: Two especially embarrassing examples of academic squalor

And North carolina is such a contradiction to the precepts of institutions of higher learning, it should be shuttered, like, YESTERDAY.

...both schools are an embarrassment to themselves and to higher education.

...the apples are rotten to the core.

Over at North carolina, many Tar Heels have dismissed two decades of academic impurities, as detailed in the recent Kenneth Wainstein report, which came after whistleblower Mary Willingham - who was treated like Marie Antoinette - shined a light on academic fraud there.

Typical is the reaction of North carolina men's basketball Coach Roy Williams. At the outset of a "SportsCenter" interview last month, Williams said, "You want to talk basketball, we'll talk basketball. But I'm not going to rehash all that other crap."

All that other crap?

That between 1993 and 2011, more than 3,100 unc students, 48 percent of them athletes, took "phantom classes" in the Afro-American studies department? That 169 athletes, including 123 football players and 15 men's basketball players, got a grade in a nonexistent class to keep their GPA above 2.0 for the semester? That Williams's 2004-05 national title team included Rashad McCants, who says he didn't write papers submitted in his name?

That actually is a lot of crap.

I guess I can't blame Williams for wanting to flush it all down the toilet in the closest restroom to those phantom classes.

Re: unc scandal- Prongs etc - Graph of BBallers in AFAMscam

This is an effort to achieve impermissible benefits. They've been running the textbook scam over there since my brother was at unc with an athlete roommate. Many players are on book scholarships (among other things) even if not a full ride. They get the syllubus and buy every book on the list - even the suggested readings. Then they drop the class or return the non-mandatory books during full refund periods AND sell the other books back for cash at the course's end. Given the price of textbooks these days, this is a pretty significant amount of money.

Players taking fake paper classes likely missed the free money that came from the textbook scam.

Re: unc scandal- Prongs etc - Graph of BBallers in AFAMscam clas

If Nyang'oro was paid $12,000 for a single class that he did not teach, how much was he paid for all the classes that he did not teach? Also, were books assigned for these paper classes and did athletes on full or partial scholarships resell the books for cash? If the school was knowingly paying Nyang'oro and also using the classes to make sure the kids got their pell grant money, how could it be possible for them to not use the Book reselling scam as well?

That's how I read it. Boxhill is asking Crowder to make up a phony syllabus with required books on it so that they can give the athlete money to "buy" those books. There's a typo in the email but it sounds like Boxhill initially tried to get some textbook numbers from the library but could not. Just my speculation here, but it may be germane to the Pell Grant fraud, as government student loans usually have a portion allocated for books and other supplies.

Gotcha, thanks!

And yea, as far as Pell Grants and other federal aid is concerned, after the school gets theirs (assuming tuition, fees, etc. aren't already paid for), they just write you a check to do with as you please.

Bobbi Owen no longer listed as unc-CH honors director

A former administrator who failed to take action that could have stopped academic fraud at unc-Chapel Hill is no longer listed as director of the university's Honors Semester in London for the spring of 2015.

Bobbi Owen, a professor of dramatic art who until this year was also a senior associate dean, had been listed as director of the study abroad program on the honors website last week. Her name was replaced with Ritchie Kendall, a professor of English and comparative literature.

James Leloudis, associate dean for honors at unc-CH, said Monday in an email that he could not comment on a personnel matter.

According to the Oct. 22 Wainstein report that detailed 18 years of academic fraud involving more than 3,100 students, Owen had knowledge about the proliferation of independent study classes in African and Afro-American Studies around 2005 or 2006. Though evidence indicated she asked former AFAM Chairman Julius Nyang'oro to cut down on such classes, she took little or no action to get to the bottom of what was a widespread scheme of no-show classes disproportionately enrolled by athletes, the report said. Owen's "inexplicable decision" not to press the issue allowed the bogus classes to go on for five more years, the report said.

In interviews with the team of Kenneth Wainstein, a former federal prosecutor hired by unc-CH, Owen said she could not remember meeting with Nyang'oro about a large number of independent study courses under his name. She did say she had concerns about a departmental assistant, Deborah Crowder, signing grade change forms. Crowder was identified as the mastermind of the scheme by Wainstein.

Owen has not commented on the Wainstein report and is on a research leave this semester.

I'm glad I ain't eating. Seriously. First of all , by reading that story one might presume her to be a large part of the scam. She was a foot-soldier. Guilty as heck , yeah , but following orders. unx won't say that just like they won 't even say she's fired. Her name is "no longer listed" and she's on a "research leave." Disgusting. Oh and Leloudis can KMA. unx , last time I checked , was a public university. "Can't comment on a personnel matter?!" WTF?! I don't think FERPA applies here anymore than it did the other gazillion times unx hid behind it. #carolinaway

PHIL 266.001 - Ethics of Sport:

Instructor: Jan Boxill. This course meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. in Caldwell 213.

Sports play a significant role in the lives of millions of people throughout the world, as participants, fans, spectators, and critics. Sport provides a unique model for understanding our own society. Even those who are uninvolved, bored or critical of sports are often affected by them. In this course, we will examine the concept and practice of sport from a philosophical perspective. We will discuss broad questions, like the benefits of sport, the ethics of competition, sportsmanship, and violence, as well as more specific questions that have arisen in recent years, such as the concept of amateurism in college sports, controversies surrounding violence, performance enhancing drugs, Title IX, and cases of racism and sexism. In doing so, we will read the work of philosophers, athletes, and sports media members. The course will be taught at a sophomore level and can be taken without any prerequisites in philosophy.

Media outlets file lawsuit against unc Chapel Hill over personnel records

A coalition of 10 media outlets filed a lawsuit Monday against the University of North carolina at Chapel Hill over the university's refusal to release information about employees punished or dismissed in the wake of the Wainstein report on academic irregularities. This is the third public records lawsuit against the university since the academic-athletic scandal began in 2010.

A coalition of 10 media outlets filed a lawsuit Monday against the University of North carolina at Chapel Hill over its refusal to release information about the dismissals or punishments of certain employees in the wake of the Wainstein report. The Wainstein report was the culmination of an investigation into academic irregularities at the university that benefited a large number of athletes. When the report was released in October, Chancellor Carol Folt announced that nine employees had been fired or disciplined as a result of the findings.

Subsequently, the university has refused to identify the nine people fired or disciplined. It has also not provided discipline information about specific employees when requested. The State Personnel System Act makes public certain portions of an employee's personnel file, including the date and type of each demotion, suspension or demotion for disciplinary reasons. The university's position is that the information cannot be released while administrative appeals are pending.

Can't figure which is more disturbing. unx paying another PR firm to spin the fraud or unx donors really don't care if they contribute money to the most egregious offender in NCAA history or seeing another African American with ties to unx unabashedly supporting the racism and exploitation brought to light these last 4+ years. Sad...

Donations to unc continue after Wainstein report

Despite the negative press unc received from the Wainstein report, there is little evidence to show it has affected donations to the University, which will announce the receipt of the largest individual donation in its history during a press conference today.

Overall donations from July to November were up 6 percent from the previous donation year...,

At the University's calling center, students ask alumni and parents of students for donations. To combat questions from prospective donors, the student employees are asked to add a personal touch to positive responses about the report.

Junior Tyra Pearson said the center brought in an expert to speak about the Wainstein report and how to respond to people who have concerns.

She said when people have concerns about the report, she talks about being an African-American at the University.

She said her perspective on the scandal, which happened in the former Department of African and Afro-American Studies, sometimes helps settle the prospective donors.

Pearson has worked at the calling center for two months and has come across five people who refused to donate because of the report. She said she does not think the report diminishes the integrity of the entire school.

"Only one in 1,000 people were involved in the scandal. (On the phone), I discuss how a small number impacted the University," Pearson said.

Routh said the University isworking with an outside public relations group called Edelman to reduce fallout from the report.

"We are working to communicate with more transparency, and people really appreciate that," he said.

...so far, there have not been any differences in the amount of significant donations.

So-called "blue blood" sees the light...

Column: We must not let conversation around Wainstein report die

I remember my throat burning. I was 10 years old and I was yelling louder than I had ever yelled in my life.

The clock was running out on unc basketball's victory against Illinois in the 2005 championship game. I whooped and jumped around my living room as Sean May enveloped Roy Williams in a bear hug.

I'm part of a blue-blood carolina family. My grandfather is a Professor Emeritus of this university. My parents, my older brother, an aunt and an uncle graduated from here, and I've lived in Chapel Hill my entire life.

For all that time, I've wanted to be part of this community that has shaped my family's destiny and, for more than 100 years, this community has unified around unc basketball. I never had any reason to question my firm belief that unc basketball was a force for good that reflected the values of this University.

But my family also taught me to commit myself to living ethically, and it taught me to be skeptical - values that this University actively promotes.

So for the last few years, as a scandal has shaken this University to its core, my memories have become tainted. Unethical behavior existed in the very programs that provided the University with a common culture.

But this scandal has not sprung up as an isolated event. Deborah Crowder, Jan Boxill and Julius Nyang'oro did a host of things wrong, but placing the blame for this scandal at their feet and their feet only is an act of cowardice. We must examine more closely why they did what they did. A large part of that answer will come from an examination of a collegiate model that encourages contradictions and hypocrisies - a system my fanship has been complicit in promoting.

It is indicative of just how flawed our system of college athletics is that well-meaning and formerly respected members of our University broke ethical boundaries and ignored rules in an attempt to prop up our collective illusion of "The carolina Way," and help athletes attempting to succeed in a system rigged against them.

This scandal has come at a time when, nationally, the model of big-time college athletics has come under attack for being exploitative. Some of the key members of this movement have been members of our community: Mary Willingham blew the whistle on the fake classes at unc and has tirelessly advocated for athletes, even as she was forced out of her job. Taylor Branch, a unc alumnus and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, helped to spark the national conversation around this issue with an incisive piece in The Atlantic.

Yet I don't feel that we have collectively taken full stock of why wrongdoing happened at this University, and I am disturbed. We seem to be heading into basketball season ready to retire this discussion and pass the scandal off as the actions of a few individuals.

We are all responsible if we let this happen. But the greatest responsibility for action should fall on the University's administration, which has unfortunately helped to promote a narrative of events that de-emphasizes their national context, proposed instituting only minor reforms, disproportionately blamed the former department of African and Afro-American Studies and has failed to apologize for bullying Willingham.

I recognize that administrators are in a tough spot. These issues present the possibility of hard choices, and they are dealing with pressures from outside institutions that are difficult to comprehend. But there are some important ways that they have not lived up to their responsibility of upholding this University's mission to be an honorable institution.

I cannot totally reject the central cultural role athletics play at our University - they have been an essential part of my identity for my entire life - nor can I dishonor the admirable and backbreaking work our athletes perform for this community. But I can't watch unc basketball with a totally clear conscience anymore.

Tonight, I'm going to be at the game against Iowa, and I am going to cheer on our team as loud as I ever have. But I'm going to try to be cognizant of what, exactly, I'm watching, and I'm not going to stop talking about these issues until we embrace our University's responsibility to lead the movement for a much-needed overhaul of college athletics. I hope I am joined by more voices in our community in doing so.

Art never ceases to amaze in his defense of the corrupt "flagship." Check out the "COMMENTS" section. Good Lord , he gets killed....

Art's Angle: Tilting In The Breeze

It just seems like unc is tired, worn out, sick of all we've been through the last few years. The alumni and fans still come (well, some of them) and they watch (well, some of them), but the pride that made carolina special for more than 50 years has been so beaten down that you can't see it, or feel it, much anymore.

And I'm not talking just about carolina Basketball, which put on another dismal show Wednesday night in the under-filled Smith Center against a more aggressive Iowa team, followed on the same TV station by Duke stunning Wisconsin (where few visiting teams win) while shooting 65 percent and missing five shots in the second half.

Even the DTH, the student newspaper that always gives its school the benefit of the doubt, wrote this week that being a Tar Heel doesn't feel so good these days. The academic scandal, perpetrated by a few that affected so many, has worn everyone down to a frazzle. The brand we've loved and boasted about for years has been battered into submission.

It was part of an athletic sponsorship bringing in $650,000, but the "green out" at the Dean Dome Wednesday night almost made it look like we were hiding the famed carolina blue on national TV in favor of another color that nobody seemed to understand. And Roy Williams, going through one of the toughest personal periods of his life, did not help by trashing the maneuver, calling it an attempt to make "13 cents" in his post-game press conference.

There is little understanding of what is going on because everyone is trying to find solace in a neutral corner. The $650k green-out doesn't really affect the athletic department because the money goes to the athletic media rights holder (Learfield) that is trying to recoup its commitment of $100 million dollars to unc over 13 years. So when ol' Roy was asked to wear a green tie against Iowa, he agreed. But he changed at halftime because his team was playing such dadgum bad basketball.

We had a big win in football at Duke, a proud win on national TV, before a few players just about ruined it by trashing the visiting locker room with spray paint. In a vacuum, that's not a big deal, but how do you tell 18-20 year olds that everything they do these days reflects on the bigger picture at their school? P.J. Hairston certainly never got it, and he lost his college basketball career.

And then the football team comes back with an inexplicably putrid performance against its arch gridiron rival, raising more questions about the current coaching staff and giving a transfusion of hope to an N.C. State program trying to get off life support. Then came the annual ACC-Big Ten Challenge game at the Smith Center - in years past a very big deal. But the building was embarrassingly empty at tip-off and never looked close to the announced 18,000 attendance figure.

Williams himself looks March tired and it's barely December. He lost his best buddy, Ted Seagroves, to cancer Tuesday morning, his wife Wanda is battling through health problems, and children of a unc colleague and prominent basketball alumnus are waging uphill fights against their own cancers. That disease is ol' Roy's cause, as he's helped to raise million for unc's Lineberger over the years, so you can imagine the frustration he feels over something else besides basketball.

His team, supposedly deeper and more talented this season, was awful against Iowa, shooting 28 percent for the game and looking disjointed on both ends of the floor. The Tar Heels had a 15-1 offensive rebounding edge in the first half, yet still trailed. Then they gave up 16 offensive boards in the second half, many that bailed out the Hawkeyes after they missed all 12 of their 3-point shots.

Players who have been in the program two or three years are trying to do too much and not getting the results. The game turned when athletic and gifted 6-11 junior forward Brice Johnson missed a one-foot put-back in front of the rim and then picked up his fourth foul out of frustration. "Next time I won't be such a baby and just dunk the ball," Johnson said. But every "next time" means he didn't do it the last time. Star Marcus Paige, the preseason ACC Player of the Year, probably isn't feeling the pressure but he sure looks like it. He had numerous good looks against Iowa, yet made only 4 of 16 shots, 3 of 12 from behind the arc. Williams ran players in and out of the lineup, trying to find someone who would make a commitment to playing defense and rebounding. This is the second time in seven games that he's had to call his team out for lack of hustle, which is embarrassing for a program of carolina's caliber.

We know what we think, because we've been around long enough to know that the carolina we are living these days isn't the real carolina. But what must the administration think?

An Athletic Director who was dealt a really bad hand when he took over a "hear no evil, see no evil" department in 2011 and who hasn't been able to get his head above water since. And a chancellor from Dartmouth, who may know what academic integrity looks and feels like but, wrapped in the cloak of big-time college athletics, is deferring to a Board of Governors that wants answers without caring about consequences and getting advice from a $2 million P.R. firm that (from this vantage point) hasn't earned any of that jack thus far.

It's been a tough stretch for a hallowed university where the old leadership naively believed that "it could never happen to us" and the new leadership seems to be tilting in the breeze. We want our university back, but sadly no one seems to know how or where to find it.

US legislation would create presidential commission for college sports

A retiring Virginia congressman filed bipartisan legislation this week that would set up a presidential commission to look into several high-profile issues with college sports, including the academic fraud that spanned 18 years at unc-Chapel Hill.

Rep. Jim Moran, a Democrat with a suburban Washington, D.C., district, said the legislation has no chance of passing in the lame-duck session of Congress. But he said he wanted to get things started.

"It may be one of the two bipartisan pieces of legislation that actually has a chance in this new upcoming Congress," he said.

The legislation joins a handful of other bills filed in the past year or so to deal with concerns that big-money college sports have overtaken the academic missions of universities. Moran has 10 co-sponsors, three of them Republicans.

Moran, a former football player at Holy Cross, said the unc scandal helped drive his legislation.

"It was one of those straws that broke the camel's back," he said. "It's just been an accumulation of things that are very troubling, and unc, unfortunately, is not by any means unique."

The presidential commission of sports experts and congressional members would "identify and examine" the issues surrounding college sports, and make recommendations to try to fix them. Among the issues identified are whether colleges are sacrificing academic integrity to build winning sports teams and risking the health, safety and financial well-being of athletes who are not allowed under NCAA rules to profit from their names and likenesses.

The commission would also take up due process concerns for athletes accused of NCAA violations.

"It's almost like a serf system, indentured servitude," Moran said. "The people are making themselves enormously wealthy in some cases while the kids get injured and cast aside."

Moran said he is attending a closed-door meeting with U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and others on Tuesday to talk about the issues facing college sports.

There are no North carolina representatives sponsoring the bill. Moran said U.S. Rep. David Price, whose district includes unc, is concerned about college sports. Price has filed a bill seeking more financial transparency from college athletic programs, the NCAA, athletic conferences and bowls.

One North carolina lawmaker who could be key to the passage of Moran's legislation is U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx. The Banner Elk Republican is chair of the House Subcommittee on Higher Education.

Foxx has said little publicly about the scandal. Moran said he will talk to her about his bill.

Some observations:

1) From those tweets , clearly , other courses/departments were involved. Two new names surfaced as well.

2) One of unx's main defenses for all this is that the violations were "limited" , "isolated" and involved but a few "rogue offenders." Again , CLEARLY! , that ain't true. How many names and courses have to be unearthed before unx drops the "rogue offender" defense? This was systemic academic fraud designed specifically for the benefit of athletics and it was perpetuated by like-minded individuals throughout the university. Is what it is. "If it looks like a duck , walks like a duck and quacks like a duck..."

3) The only thing "isolated" about this mess was the men's basketball team when they were "tutored" in the Smith Center...separated from the other athletes. And...

4) Smith took the high road by not publicly criticizing Dr. Vogler and Jan Boxill. Stated both individuals "probably thought they were being helpful." Ya can count on one hand the number of people directly related with unx who have done something that honorable. #carolinaway

E-mail from Boxill to Jennifer Townsend ( Wayne Walden's replacement ) Substantiates Reynold's comments about the separation of basketball players and Deano's role in it. Also , about those "adjustments" that had been made "this summer?" Boxill was referring to the departures of Deb Crowder and Wayne Walden. She was also referencing the alleged final enrollments of the men's basketball team ( "our boys" ) in AFAM....

unx wants to challenge Wainstein now. Ya know , the one THEY purchased. Be careful what ya ask for...

According to the Wainstein Report, the student's GPA was slipping and he was in danger of losing his scholarship when a Morehead-Cain advisor referred him to AFAM secretary Deborah Crowder, the leader of the paper-class system that provided the opportunity for higher grades than the quality of submitted work justified.

"Crowder placed him in a paper class, he got an A, and was able to keep his scholarship," the report stated.

This titillating anecdote was offered as embarrassing proof of how widespread the fraud was. Except two months later, the executive director of the Morehead-Cain program announced that it wasn't true.

"I am pleased to share with you that the allegations about the (Morehead-Cain) Foundation were without merit," Charles E. Lovelace wrote in an open letter last week.

Lovelace wrote that Wainstein did not have any evidence supporting the allegation, spoke to no one who had personal knowledge of the activity and didn't interview anyone in the program. The foundation's lawyers found no evidence that a scholar has been referred to a paper class.

"The allegations were founded entirely on hearsay information by a few individuals not connected to our program," Lovelace wrote.

The Morehead-Cain incident didn't necessarily impact the serious conclusions reached by Wainstein. But it could serve as an example that not everything in the $3 million report stands up to close scrutiny, a consideration that takes on bigger resonance if the NCAA is indeed using the report as a launching point for its own investigation.

Again, the number of players interviewed is immaterial to the larger issues of the fraud. But Williams pointed out the mistakes in order to undermine Wainstein's overall message, including the most damning finding pertaining to Williams - that his hand-picked academic advisor, Wayne Walden, knew about Crowder's scheme.

Wainstein's report will likely be the definitive account of this major academic scandal. So some feel that it's important to examine the report critically - especially now that the NCAA is investigating and could penalize unc based on the report's findings if they go unchallenged.

Throwin' out a single incident that may or may not have been erroneously reported as if it negates the findings of the entire report. Of course , he goes outta his way to concede just that....one incident erroneously reported does NOT change a thing. We've seen this movie before. Mary Willingham's sloppy foot-noting , according to B-Rad , called into question everything she had revealed. Wainstein , given its narrow scope , was nowhere near comprehensive anyway. Word of advice , holes. Take your whitewash and STFU. B-Rad! LIVE...!

Jon Sasser, a lawyer for Butch Davis, questioned why no other coaches from that season were interviewed. Though Wainstein noted that he wasn't able to speak with Chuck Pagano (an assistant at unc for one year, in 2007) and then-defensive coordinator Everett Withers,

"If the NCAA is going to use that report against the university in terms of what the coaches knew, I vehemently deny any knowledge of that slide," Shoop said.

Shameless. Withers refused to speak to Wainstein even if the investigator agreed to fly to Virginia to speak with 'im. Withers denied it then Wainstein presented evidence to the contrary. Everett's a liar. Shoop , otoh , is no defender of unx. Neither is his wife. They're interested in defending JOHN. Understandable given that he's been lumped in with a bunch of cheaters. Reading this article , one might assume that both men would come to unx's defense. Nope. The link below is a convo between me and Shoop's wife TODAY,.,..

unc-Chapel Hill athletics reform faculty group calls for more reforms

A faculty group that has called for athletics reforms in the wake of the scandal at the University of North carolina at Chapel Hill says it's not time to change the topic, and that existing reforms are not enough.

The athletics reform group is an ad hoc group of faculty members who have been vocal about their athletics-related concerns at faculty meetings in light of the school's paper class scandal. On Monday, they brought a list of reforms to the unc-Chapel Hill Faculty Executive Committee that included a request for a formal apology to university whistleblower Mary Willingham and for a move by the university to voluntarily vacate any championships won with athletes kept eligible by the school's scandal.

"I don't think it's time to change the subject…," athletics reform group member and professor Harry Watson told the committee. He said he believes faculty members need to send "a signal to ourselves and to the world that we are changing course and we really want to change the culture as well as the bureaucratic procedures for this, that and the other."

Watson spoke up for an apology for Willingham as well as for a move to vacate championships won by players kept eligible by the scandal, saying that that would show that university was taking responsibility and not "(waiting) for punishment." The NCAA re-opened its investigation into the university this summer.

Jay Smith, a member of the reform group and a history, told the committee the athletics reform would show that the university values education and integrity "more than we value wins."

Smith is the co-author of a book on the academic and athletics scandal with Willingham, the former unc-Chapel Hill learning specialist for student-athletes who resigned from her position at the school and filed suit against the university and the unc-system.

She claimed that she faced retaliation in violation of her First Amendment rights and of a state whistleblower law for raising concerns about alleged improper treatment for student-athletes at the school.

In response to the request for an apology for Willingham, Shielda Rogers, a member of the Faculty Executive Committee and a clinical associate professor in the unc-Chapel Hill School of Nursing, asked if the lawsuit brought by Willingham might be a barrier to the apology.

"They may not be willing to do anything with that because of the litigation," she said.

Watson said in response that "lawsuits were made to be settled" and an out-of-court settlement could include an apology.

Bruce Cairns, faculty chair, director of the North carolina Jaycee Burn Center and a professor of surgery at the unc School of Medicine, said that while he does think the faculty needs to have a conversation on the topics, he also said there are other reforms proposed by the committee that are not "evolving."

"We have a lawsuit as was mentioned," he said. "We have the NCAA (investigation)."

Among other reform proposals, the athletics reform group has called for the integration of the athletics tutoring and academic advising services with the academic support operation for the rest of the university.

They also want changes to the special-talent admissions process, calling for an end to admissions of students through the process who have the lowest expected grade point average of any of the special-talent students.

Regarding the request from the reform group to merge the athletics advising and tutoring tutor program with the program for other university students, Watson said the idea is to take the program "out from under the athletics nose."

Lissa Broome, a professor in the NC-Chapel Hill School of Law and the faculty's athletics representative, said unc's Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes is structured to assist student-athletes who have special demands on their time. She said it's funded by athletics, but reports directly to the university's chief academic officer.

Joy Renner, chair of the Faculty Athletics Committee and an associate professor and director in the Department of Allied Health Sciences, also said that the NCAA has special rules about who can tutor athletes and she also said that they're monitored.

"That's the problem," said Dr. Lewis Margolis, an associate professor of maternal and child health at the unc-Chapel Hill Gillings School of Public Health. "The problem is we don't want that kind of a separate culture."

Margolis added after the meeting that he felt the faculty had an understanding at the meeting that "there are challenges that have not been adequately met," and said faculty members need to continue the conversation.

This email captures the unc scandal in a nutshell: Wayne Walden, the academic counselor to basketball players, asking Debby Crowder, a department manager, to place a learning disabled athlete in one of her "independent study type" classes, past the deadline for joining a new class and with the goal of keeping the athlete eligible to play on the court.

There's another troubling aspect to this email: unc did not produce it to The News & Observer more than two years ago, when the paper made a public records request for all email correspondence involving Crowder, Julius Nyang'oro and academic counselors for the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes. It wasn't until mid-2013, and after repeated inquiries from the N&O, that unc produced emails showing a cozy relationship between ASPSA staff and Nyang'oro. But those emails represented a small portion of the relevant records.

This particular email and hundreds more surfaced in October as part of Kenneth Wainstein's unc-backed investigation.

Wainstein, a former chief of staff for the FBI, did not cite this Walden-Crowder email in his 131-page report, but included it in 1,100 pages of supplemental records.

This email shows the depths of the scandal like no other we've seen to date. Thanks to DocumentCloud.org, we've annotated it with information from Wainstein's report, unc records and other reporting (Note: You may want to use the zoom function in the top right corner to read the email).

RE: unc SCANDAL- PRONGS ETC - MW&JSMITH SPEAK@DSC / AFAMSCAM

A few brief notes as we approach mid-week…. mid-month… mid-scandal? (let's hope not...) Regarding more news stories; they are coming. Several have already been assigned dates of publication by department editors. The last thing I will do, though, is deep-six any writer and his/her projects - so please excuse (and respect) the vague-ness. I know it is irritating, but also necessary. The holiday season is often a slow time for the publication of stories; if all continues as scheduled, that will be slightly different this December.

Along the lines of the media: It was stated (right here) several years ago that the really big news would stop being broken on PP as soon as the media fully took the bull by the horns. A month or so after the PJ situation that finally happened. Many, many other items surfaced (via the media) that could have initially appeared here - but as long as those journalists continue to show the effort and desire to pursue the issues, then they will be given that opportunity. While it is nice for PP to get some recognition and praise, practicality must also be considered. The truth is, certain mainstream media outlets have a much wider reach. And besides, having everyone know that YOU know shouldn't be a necessity to self-worth and self-gratification. So yes, more is coming, but as always, you've just got to be patient.

Regarding the latest Wainstein rumors (and the possibility that unc might challenge the findings in his report). That would be an error on their part of amazing proportions. As I posted in the early Fall, some events transpired over the summer that ultimately turned the tide of that report. (the exotic animal… remember?) What the movers-and-shakers in CH did not understand (or did not WANT to understand) is that Wainstein was neither a.) shackled by the "good ol' boy" system in NC, nor b.) subject to excessive political pressure/influence from D.C. (like certain past PR hires). Put simply, he couldn't be bought (in a manner of speaking) - at least not to the extent that it was worth risking his professional reputation. The man is still young, for all practical purposes, and has more career ahead of him. Not everyone who has plenty of money simply wants to retire and kick back at the country club (which was also hard for some of those movers-and-shakers to fathom). Some people have a true drive to research, to work, and to meet personal goals. The second folly was that when he couldn't be bought (again, in a manner of speaking), the bigger mistake was an attempt at bullying.

Thus, any sort of post-report challenging would be very bad. As I mentioned earlier, several things happened back over the summer. NONE of that has been made officially public, nor do I think it ever will. But some of the finer details, should they "slip" out, would make unc wish that the originally-released 900 pages of supplemental info was all that had happened.

More to ponder: If unc ever formally challenges the Wainstein Report it will be due to "advice" given to them by their current PR team. (the "group of 14") If the challenge comes to fruition, it will be an epic public fiasco… and who do you think will (financially) profit from having to concoct ways to defend unc's reputation (during the ensuing fiasco), publically? Think on that infinity symbol for a bit. The irony is that unc themselves cannot see the connection. An even bigger irony? There have been whispers that two of the 14 could be looking for new jobs in the near future. Let's see if the reasons ever leak out.

Finally: unc's punishment. Will they get what they "deserve"? No. But that's a qualified "no"… because ALL of the wrongs that have taken place will never come out, and more importantly: nor should they. When unc (meaning, J. Martin) said "this wasn't an athletic scandal", he didn't know it - but he was ironically correct. If all the details ever came out then the subsequent fallout would ruin many, many lives, and that does not need to happen. Now don't misunderstand me. I am all for accountability, especially when it comes to those who have blatantly circumvented rules in order to win basketball games, lie to parents of recruits, etc. etc.

But what is being referred to here are the "innocents" who would be affected. Hypothetical: if a 75-year-old bigwig S.O.B. was revealed to have broken rules, legally and/or ethically, and that played a vital role in everything that has ultimately transpired at unc for (well over, by the way) 18 years, should he/she be exposed? That is a tricky question, but I pose a deeper dilemma: the person did wrong, true. But did his/her 50-year-old children know, and have they taken an active role in the affair? Those offspring have 25-year-old children themselves, which means the S.O.B. might have some grandchildren in diapers. Are those TODDLERS to be condemned due to one person's actions? That is the situation of what is whispered, rumored, and in some instances factually known in regards to the true depth of the scandal. And it is also why I personally do not feel it ever needs to be known. I realize that some may disagree, and that is fine. If you ever become privy to the specific facts and details and you want to expose them, then it is your right. It will also, however, be your moral stigma to deal with. My goal (meaning, unc's accountability/punishment) has always been set, and has not really wavered over the years. It is less than what many on PP have bandied around, and is certainly less than what would result from a full-disclosure of all the corners of the closet. (there's no real reason to go into specifics) As long as the NCAA does not somehow, someway, fold, then I feel it will happen. In fact, at some point I feel that the bigwigs might decide it's best that it happens, as well.

On the flipside, there is the same roadblock as has been evident for 4+ years: there might be too many chiefs (75-year-old SOB's?) to reach than consensus. I know this isn't news to anyone on PP, but every "leader" at the school (and in the BOT and BOG) is nothing but a pawn and figurehead. Best case scenario, they truly are naïve enough to believe the obfuscation is simply about athletics (and they are okay to go along with the denials and lack of owning-up). The bigger question is whether any of the bigwigs (with the real power and influence) connected to CH will ever realize that losing a little bit of athletic prestige (past, current, and short-term future) truly IS worth keeping all of those dark secrets buried. They have tried to protect some pieces of cloth for several years now, morals be damned. But when it comes to one's posterity, then I think we could eventually see some concessions being made - voluntarily. It would most certainly be the most prudent course of action, and I don't say that as a rival - I say it as one who feels that the sins of the very old should not destroy the futures of the very, very young.

Q&A with Mark Emmert: 'A seminal moment for college sports'

Q: What was your reaction to the Wainstein report at North carolina that showed how deep-rooted the academic fraud was there among athletes and the university?

Emmert: I was impressed the university committed the energy and resources to do that study and they made it public and they rolled it all out there, and that's a very hard thing for a university to do. Here's one of the great universities on Earth and they're working very, very hard to get this right. Everybody looking at that was I'm sure disappointed. But by everything I've seen, they're incredibly serious about it and working very hard at it. And at the end of the day, only the universities themselves can take responsibility for that. You can't have anybody from a conference office or national office go in and say here's how you teach English 101. No, only the schools can do that.

Q: What delayed the NCAA's investigation of North carolina?

Emmert: They weren't really delays. The staff went in originally looking at an issue unrelated to any potential academic misconduct and was focused entirely on that and finished that up, and then as all of this issue unfolded, then the investigative staff reengaged with the university. The university has been very forthcoming working with our people.

Q: What's the status of the investigation?

Emmert: It's still an ongoing investigation. unc has been very open and forthcoming and it's been a good project, as far as i can tell. I stay away from investigations. There's a firewall between me and investigations. I don't have anything to do with them, despite what people occasionally think. That's not my job.

Ain't it funny how every time more unx dirt is revealed or spoken about , that person(s) is "at it again." It's never "Maybe we shoulda come clean and made a legit effort at cleaning up instead of paying millions for PR and whirewash investigations." Shooting the messenger. #carolinaway
