Apollo is the only horse to win the Kentucky Derby without racing as a 2 year old. That was in 1882. The 2 probably favorites (Justify and Magnum Moon) both didn't race until this year. Justify's first race wasn't until February 18 but 3 beyer speed figures in a row of 101, 104 and 107 in the Santa Anita Derby will open a lot of eyes.

Oh, and Todd Pletcher has the winner of the Arkansas Derby (Magnum Moon), The Florida Derby (Audible), The Louisiana Derby (Noble Indy) and The Wood Memorial (Vino Rosso). Just another great year for the little guy. It's heartwarming to see such an underdog story with Todd.

I assume beyer speed is always a great predictor of the greatest 2 minutes in sports for 'breds that have never raced a mile and a quarter.

It is to a lot of people that bet. I didn't say that is who I would be betting on, just that they would be the favorites. Neither one has ever faced any adversity in their races. Magnum Moon drifted out about 4 paths down the stretch in the Arkansas Derby.
