Nah....learned that you can't look directly at an eclipse without protection when I was in the 3rd grade back in the 60's. They showed us how to make something to look at it safely. The "they" you referenced must the the same people who have duped you into believing the beyond ridiculous notions that the earth is flat, that there is no such thing as outer space, and that you can't visit Antarctica on your own. Of course, you don't believe any of that to start with, as you're only trolling for attention.

Atmospheric conditions don't allow for it. There is dust, water vapor and other obstructive elements that prevent it. Also there are limits to what you can see, due to the laws of perspective everything approaches a 'vanishing point' at which the limits of sight come into play. Now, with modern telescopic and optical equipment some of these things can be extended, like seeing Chicago across Lake Michigan, Toronto from 35 miles away etc. I'll come back and post some pictures of my own when the new Nikon is released with its 125X optical zoom, should be illuminating.
I'm looking forward to the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21st. Reports indicate as many as 50 million Americans may be somewhere along the path of totality on eclipse day. Many towns on the path are planning festivals: food, music, etc.
Yes, you will need eye protection to view the partial eclipse phase. You can pick up a pair of eclipse glasses on the Internet for about a dollar. (They should be rated ISO 12312. Black polymer is the preferred material.) I expect many merchants will offer free glasses with their promo logos as eclipse day approaches.
When the eclipse is total (moon fully covers the sun) -- you will NOT need eye protection. You can remove the glasses and enjoy the spectacular sight!
Unfortunately Brushy is not a skeptic but a denier. A "skeptic" is a person open to scientific inquiry, critical investigation, and reasoning to establish a claim. A "denier" rejects evidence a priori without objective consideration.
In other words his worldview is much like a religion, locked in belief and faith. He'll always refuse to accept easily performed experiments or observations that disprove his views. He won't think independently. He'll only parrot long ago discredited doctrines of 19th century flat earth leaders (like Rowbothan,"ice walls"). He's uninterested in rational inquiry.

Looking at a more detailed map today, it looks like we will have to drive about an hour to be in the total eclipse. I'm thinking a hike up to Clingman's Dome in the Smokies would make for a spectacular spot.
I've never been to Hopkinsville. I looked this up and I want to go. But I assume with the amount of tourists that will be in town that day it will be quite a daunting task
There's one in Madisonville as well. We're doing all of our eating/drinking/sleeping in M'ville away from the masses.
