There is literally a thread on the main board where people are bitching because they think Jay Bilas is a giant Duke suckup.

Some people are moronic.

Bilas???!!! "A giant Duke suckup!!!!???" Dude you called it, some people are "moronic!!"

I find Bilas’ neutral position on Duke to be annoying.

I find the tone on other sites surprising. Seemed like everyone considered him the best commentator on ESPN.

Actually I think Bilas has become much better this year in giving plaudits to Duke for their performance and potential. I NEVER want a HOMER, but Jay has become much more neutral and does a good job on Duke games.Oh I dont care for some of his self-promotion, but thats his style....

I do find Jay Williams more conscience of his Duke roots, and reaching over too much not to show favoritism... Of course he wanted to go to UNC very badly....

Here. Come chime in. I want to make sure that these people understand how it actually is. Check out my post and see if you agree.

BTW, read the original article. I love a good blowhard... but Jay tries too hard, sometimes.

Dude agree very much w/you...No way he's a "homer" and I certainly wouldnt want him to be. He is become much more NEUTRAL in calling Duke games, much like CBS analyst Grant Hiil, my personal fave analyst.

I know some of you guys thinks that bilas is the best, but I use the mute button when he’s doing our games. I would rather listen to Elmore than bilas, and that’s pretty bad.
Give me Grant Hill or the G man.

Bilas has gotten better at what he does. I think that K may have had a talk with him at some point when he came to Durham in the off season. I could see K telling Bilas, "Jay, you may be the best at what you do, but it's ok that fans know you went to Duke. You can still be the best even if you compliment us."
I see this all happening with K looking at him with a slight grin on his face.

There are teams that scare me more than Virginia.. I think us beating them without Tre, while Cam had a bad shooting night and UVA shot better than us (FG%, 3%, & FT%) says something.. and I don’t think us playing them on a neutral court changes much, when you add Tre to the mix.

Yea I know! I usually thought that KYjeff poster was a pretty decent poster, but it looks like he has turned into a whiny little brat! Tre deserves to be on the defensive player of the year list and I do agree with Jay on his analysis of Tre being the best on ball defender.

Oh i still can’t post on the main board! I’m not sure what the issue is, otherwise I would have definitely put my two cents in on Bilas supposedly being a Duke suckup!

Yeah, people took THAT as being a Duke shill. Dude, nearly everyone agrees that Tre is one of the best defenders in the country.

Jay definitely doesn't like to show favoritism and can get on my nerves a little bit but, fact of the matter is he knows his **** and gives quality commentary game in and game out. I do wish he'd let his Dukieness shine through more but even if he doesn't say it, you can tell when he's calling a Duke game who he's going for, if we're up big or going on a run and they show him, he's happy as can be.

I liked him until about 2005. Probably like most, everything he says gets old and annoying pretty quick. I think he should have retired years ago. Feel like the game has slowly passed him by.

As far as Bilas, he's always been my favorite on ESPN, when he isn't hyping up UNC.

I think Bilas is at his best when he’s in-studio. He’s not great doing color commentary, IMO. His schtick about the NCAA, although I pretty much agree with him, just gets tiresome during seemingly every broadcast. I don’t need to hear it during the game.

As for Vitale, it’ll be a sad day when he’s done. He’s been such a great ambassador for college basketball, The V Foundation, kids and he’s a genuinely great person. College basketball won’t realize how much he’s missed until he’s gone.

I like Vitale more than the majority. I do understand why he is annoying to some, but I don't mind at all when he is doing our games.

I have a friend at work who met him in an airplane and he had his son there also. He said Vitale talked to his son tbe whole flight and told him to give him his address and he would send him some stuff. My friend said he didn't really expect anything to come, but about two weeks later a box came that was full of basketballs, some hats, Tee shirts, and I'm not sure what all else

I'm a Bilas fan. Never have understood the dislike for him from some of this board. We seem to dislike homer's on this board such as Len Elmore and Hubert Davis when he was announcing. Jay just does his job and calls it the way he sees it. Never heard a critical word about him from Coach K. To me he is Duke treasure. He is the best in the business. How many can we claim are the best in the business. He also was a very good and valueble Duke player. Accepted his role. Perhaps it's that he is so smart and does his homework that gets under some of our skins. OFC

I liked Bobby Knight. Just like Romo, he would predict the play before it happened. O also really liked Chris Weber. Knows the game, has a beef with nobody, just comes across as neutral and positive.

Sky he's just a little too arrogant for my taste, especially when compared to class acts like Grant Hill on CBS and the G man on Raycom. The self promoter in Jay on his "94 feet" walks with a player on a team.....You and I BOTH BLEED DUKE BLUE, but I'm not really saying anything different than most other people on this board.

I would say Bilas was a good and solid player, but "very good and valuable?" I 'd have to say Johnny Dawkins and Mark Alarie would come under that umbrella more on that '86 natty runner-up team.

I will say Bilas has gotten much more neutral in his coverage of Duke this year. He gives praise when its deserved. I would NEVER want a "HOMER" either my friend.....I'd much rather Jay do a Duke game than Elmore too- Lenny hates Duke doesnt he????

What seems to me what gets on some of our nerves about Jay most on this board is of coursense is what some conceive as being arrogant because that's brought up a lot, he's tendancy have to point out mistakes Duke players make and coaches decisisions from time to time. He has a tendency to say so and so should have did this or that. He likes for us to know how much he knows and he points out bad calls made by officials but I know of several people like him who have a certain arrogance about them, a tendancy to point out mistakes made by Duke players and coaches decisisions from time to time. These folks have a tendancy to say so and so should have did this or that . They like for us to know how much they know and point out bad calls by officials. What is the difference between Jay and the posters who do the same OFC

Sky I would say "the difference" is Jay is obviously exposed to a much, much, much larger audience in his critique. Also the posters arent getting huge paychecks, Jay is...They're here for their love of Duke....

Beyond the shadow of doubt Jay Bilas love Duke just as much as you or I. I ask you this hart. If you were fortunate to have Jay's job just how would you handle it if all the viewers knew you were associated with Duke and they all knew how big a fan of Duke you are. Would you call it the way you see it or the way you want to see it. Would you be more like Elmore or more like Bilas? You are gonna of course say be more nuetral. I happen to think Jay is very nuetral. I think we look for things that Jay says that is critical of Duke and seem to miss it when he says good things about Duke. I guess what it boils down to is you either like him in the way he does his job or you don't. I guess I'm just in the minority. It just seems to me year after year we feel the need to start being on him. I know the pic of the beating of a dead horse is coming . :) I love him doing our games but I wish he didn't do any because I know the comments are going to come. But this is just my opinion and I might be the only DI poster that feels this way. OFC

Sky your opinion and all opinions are what make our board so great! Heck we have a podcast for gosh sakes. I would emulate the way Jay is doing our games THIS YEAR, because hes called it much more DOWN THE MIDDLE....I am very glad we had this discussion sir, and respect your opinions very much.

Overall, I like Jay. Great Dukie. Kind of ironic how he dissed every aspect of the NCAA, especially how it takes advantage of the players. He makes millions because of NCAA basketball, not because he could earn a paycheck playing basketball. Not saying he isn't smart, talented, hardworking, etc. But, the NCAA is what made him rich.
