Disaster has befallen the Gambit household!!! Today was to be the day... one of the saddest of the year. My wife and I agreed it was time to take down our Christmas tree. Candlemas, the official end of the Christmas Season, passed on Friday, and Lent is fast approaching. It was time. Last night we enjoyed the tree in all its glory....shining like a Beacon of hope in the darkness of February. This morning, as we came down the steps for breakfast, my wife said "The tree smells really good today". I agreed. As we entered our family room we we were shocked to see our beautiful tree laying on its side, ornaments scattered about. Fortunately damage was light, perhaps a half dozen ornaments broken, and we have no idea what caused this calamity, but the sight of this magnificent tree in such a sorry state saddened us both. Still, we are comforted in our sorrow by memories of another wonderful Christmas season. I now must join my life in carefully putting away the ornaments and setting the tree in the woods behind our house as a haven for wildlife. May the joy and hope of Christmas stay with us the whole year through, and May God Bless Us, every one.

We had a tree fall one year also. Except it happened at about 4:00 in the morning and I thought someone broke through a window. It was loud and the sound of shattering glass was concerning. I jumped out of bed and ran downstairs to find the tree on its side and many glass ornaments shattered. It’s unfortunate but if that is the worst thing that happens today, it’s a pretty good day.
Our tree this year was dead beyond repair a couple weeks before Christmas. Bought some cheap artificial tree to replace it. So disappointing.

As we put away the ornaments, and other Christmas decorations, I am carried back in time to Christmasses long ago. I have in my hand a beautiful lighted angel that my Dad bought my Mom on their 1st Christmas. The box says December 25, 1946. Just holding it brings a flood of emotions and memories. I hope a member of my family has similar feelings holding it 77 years from now.

@fairgambit -- I'm sorry to read how this year's gambit tree came to the end of its time in your abode.
my tree experience this year was somewhat different. I enjoy a tree, and the smell and ambience it brings to the house. However, many years I take it down in early to mid-January, due to a combination of the needles falling, and my local government having free curbside pickup/recycling, but only through the middle of the month. This year, as I mentioned in an earlier post, my tree was the healthiest one I've had in years, and it barely dropped a needle the entire time it was up in my house. Due to multiple storms in my area, the local government extended the pickup until January 26, so I got to enjoy its presence in my house until Jan. 25th.
You may want to look into getting a different stand before next year's tree. @ 25 years ago, I also had a tree that fell over. I got lucky, in that none of the balls or decorations with historical significance were broken. However, I didn't want a repeat of the fall (and the potential loss of balls/decorations), so I went out and got a really stable stand that is nearly impossible to tip over.

Tom. Thanks for the sympathy and suggestion. Actually, since you mentioned a stable stand, you may have given me insight as to the reason for our disaster. We actually do have a very heavy duty stand, but it has been holding up 10-12 foot trees. As I mentioned in my post about the tree selection, this one was about 2 feet shorter with a smaller trunk. I think we failed to fully tighten the "holder" to account for the size difference and left a bit of play which ultimately led to the calamitous failure. Next year I should consult with step.eng69 to avoid another disaster.
Normally I would have sympathy for any persons tree disaster. However I’m positive that you will mitigate the financial damage by marketing the fragments this Summer as priceless Central European artifacts.
Tom, we need a man of your creativity in the marketing department of Fairgambit Worldwide Enterprises. You would not have to pay me much to secure the position and it would look very good on your resume. If interested, have your people call my people.
