Hi everyone, long time listener first time caller....The whole state of college athletics is so bad for Kentucky and like programs IMO.
I am a grad from the mid 80's and have lived in different parts of the country. I have a few examples of what poor schools are going to face.
Michigan State just received $401mm from a booster strictly for athletics. Plus, billionaires Dan Gilbert and Matt Ishbia {on the Forbes 400) have given millions.
At SMU, they bought their way into the ACC by raising $25mm in a couple of days.
That's fairly lower programs in their respective conferences. Yes, UK has many wealthy donors and boosters but if this becomes a money war we are in trouble, don't care what conference you belong to.

All reports I’ve seen indicate that UK has the highest NIL payroll in the country. We’re keeping up just fine in that area.

The problem ain’t that we’re not spending enough, instead it’s that we obviously did not spend it wisely.

Does anyone else find it strange we are supposedly paying the most, everyone says kids are All about the highest bidder and……
Lowe was our 4th choice at PG. ??? Dent and 3 others said no before landing Lowe.
Mo D was our 3rd choice at PF after Caleb Wilson and 2 others said no.
Aberdeen was Wayyyy down the list.
Pope didn’t want any of these guys. 15 said no thanks. Why????? Why are we suppose to be paying the most but can’t land anyone we really want??
Something is fishy with our NIL. I smell a rat. It’s smells just like top button Mitch.

All indications are we have the highest NIL payroll in college basketball. So how does that square with what you are saying

From what I’ve heard, it sounds like the difference is in how the payroll is allocated. For example, BYU paid a motherload to AJ Dybantsa, but most of their other players ain’t making much. They still have some guys there simply because they want to play for BYU. Some teams focused their money on just the big targets, whereas at UK nearly EVERYBODY is getting fat cash.

I guarantee you won’t find another team that paid an injured guy millions to sit out rehabbing for half the season …as we did with Jayden Quaintance. Nor one that pays its 8th or 9th men more than we do.

It's hard to speak in absolute truths when it comes to NIL but what is absolutely true is teams out there with a quarter of UK's NIL would beat the breaks off a this current squad.

It’s pretty simple. Most players don’t want to play for an unproven guy like Pope. They don’t like his results and they don’t like the kumbaya personality.

Pope always likes to act like he is the smartest man in the room and that his analytics are fail proof. He acts that way with a 63 percent career winning percentage.

That is not my opinion of what’s going on. Money is king. Pope is a great guy, plays an exciting brand of ball and I would trust my kid under his care. We kept getting reports we were in the lead with kids only for them to go somewhere else.
My take is along with recruits. No one wanted to even interview for the head coaching vacancy here. Stoops complained about NIL, Cal complained and was trying To set up a collective for former players when he left. Something is different in how we do it compared to everyone else. I do know this. Recruits want their money the very day they sign. Up front with no restrictions. Louisville was paying in installments a couple years ago and the checks bounced. They sat out and faked injuries.
It’s been said schools are already breaking the agreement everyone signed because they were losing recruits. No one wanted to wait a month while their deals went thru the clearinghouse. The deal with JMI forces them to do everything 100% by the book. We may have had the money., agreed to deals and are having trouble getting our guys paid. That would certainly explain our performance and lack of effort.

Like I said in another thread, we just need to bump our NIL budget a bit to 30-35M a year and we won’t have problems.

We don’t have great memories. A poster here listed all the guys we missed on. Where they went, and how they are killing it. We targeted the right guys. We missed on all of them. I had forgotten. When he mentioned them I remembered all the UKs top choice articles. All the defections started when our backup point decommitted and said he didn’t want to be another dude at Kentucky. Bull ish. Then we began getting turned down by everyone. That was right about the time Mitch signed the JMI deal. I don’t think top agents want to negotiate with a corporation designed to make money for themselves. No one else has done anything like this except Mitch and Kentucky. If our guys are having trouble getting paid. It would explain why no one wanted to send their guy here and why no one seem to be giving any effort once the season began. To come out and say we are having trouble paying our guys because of JMI would be suicidal.

I would be very curious what a poll, if it could be legitimately and honestly taken, would show about where being part of a National Champion team ranks in their priority for school selection. My guess is that, of course, they would like to be part of a Championship team, but it's not really that big to them. It probably means more to alumni, boosters and fans, to be honest. Does any player REALLY think and say ... I came here to win a National Championship ??

All things being equal, what is the outlier? It's playing time.

If you're a stud do you want to share mins and only get 20-24 mins or go where the pay is similar but you're "the" guy. Pope wasn't willing to offer majority mins and it's backfired with the Land of Misfit Toys.
