Title of this thread is misleading. Opened it thinking it was gonna be about John the racist Canuck.

Classic flick though. By the way, he’s a self proclaimed “jerk”...

“I am not a bum. I'm a jerk. I once had wealth, power, and the love of a beautiful woman. Now I only have two things: my friends, and... uh... my thermos.”

“The new phone book's here! The new phone book's here!"
"Boy, I wish I could get that excited about nothing."
"Nothing? Are you kidding? Page 73: Johnson, Navin R.! I'm somebody now! Millions of people look at this book every day!”

I don't know whose skin Glenn was wearing when he watched it, but The Jerk is not even in the conversation for greatest comedic movie ever. Matter of fact, a middling comedy like say "Me, Myself, and Irene" eats its lunch in a similar genre of comedy.

The Jerk has a few fine moments but it violates the 1 golden rule of comedy, never act dumber than you actually are in a comedy. The Three Stooges were masterful at that. They did very stupid things constantly yet they were hilarious because they didn't play stupid, they were like overly ambitious rubes that funny things happened to but they didn't mug stupid for the camera which is the death knell for comedy. Even when Curly would go into his schtick he did so with a gusto and a purposefulness not like some guy playing dumb. He tried hard but was dumb as a result and that was fine comedy.

Thanks for the info, Lord Z. You're a real lifesaver.
