Thoughts?

Spoiler alerts please if necessary. I'm torn between digging lots of good nuggets from the Sopranos, and at the same time it feels like a last grasp money grab from David Chase and the HBO crew.

Watched it this morning. It seemed to jump around and try to put 2 seasons of the Sopranos into 2 hours. Jumped around a lot and was hard to follow.
If you are thinking about going to see it in the theaters, you can get it for free on HBO Max if you subscribe.

You would need to have seen the show to like it IMO.
Meh.. I think I would like it without seeing the show. Could be wrong though. Best mob movie I've ever seen is a tie between The Godfather and Goodfellas.

I thought it was ok, but primarily because I loved The Soprano's so anything related to it I would like. Thought the movie could have been much better. Was even cheesy at times, especially the Silvio and Paulie actors.

Mostly, I don't understand why they picked Dickie Moltisanti (?) to focus on. A story on Tony as a kid but especially in his early years in the "family" moving up the ranks, would have been a much more compelling and relevant storyline.

But all in all, it was a better 2 hours of TV than I typically watch nowadays.

Maybe I missed something or got distracted at a bad time. But Dickie turned on Anthony, and never caught why.

I saw the part where someone was telling him Anthony looked up to him but never saw a scene that explained it or gave a real reason.

I only thought of 1 thing that could have tied it up a little better, where was Jackie Sr?

I loved learning more about Dickie, we heard him mentioned so much through the series but never got any depth of his character.

There will be more content on young Tony. Michael Gandolphini is on record saying he'd love to continue the role up until he's 30. David Chase has said pretty much the same. The ending was wide open for more storyline too.

I thought the casting in this movie was excellent. Loved all the little Easter eggs.

How so? Main characters of the movie were introduced, secondary characters for the movie were introduced well too and they were the main characters for the TV series.

Then you see Dicky’s self destructive ways that Chris always struggled with, and eventually he was hit.

I’d imagine they wouldn’t go with Saints 2 for another movie, but obviously another movie is coming IMO.

Played out like a long episode more so than a movie with plot, development etc. that being said, thought it was great. Enjoyed all the subtle and not so subtle nods to the series.

Wait, what? Did you watch the show?

One of the main themes of the entire show was Tony grooming Chris to be the ONLY person he'd ever talk business to...because he came from Dick Moltasanti's blood, and the trials and tribulations that came along with that.

Tony could size people up and read a person with the best of them, whether it came subconsciously in a dream, or otherwise...but he always had a blind spot for Chris. Chris would have been long gone in season one, if it were anyone else but Dickie's son. Now we know why.

Thought the movie was excellent.

Also, wasn't crazy about the actor who played Uncle Junior (my favorite character in the show)...but the writing and how you saw why Junior become such an insecure prick was great.

Pretty much every season both Chris and Tony talked about Chris' dad and that's why Chris was being groomed. Even Adriana and Carmella would talk about it.

****, Tony told Chris about that cop killing Chris' dad and having Chris kill him...knowing it was complete ********, but to gain his undying loyalty.

Jackie Sr was in the movie, in his limited scenes, you saw how he had more of an edge to him than Tony.

The movie did a great job of not over explaining anything. They allowed the audience to figure out things for themselves. I could see a few more movies coming down the pike. There's so much information to work with.

A few gummies and a bottle of wine, so maybe I missed it. I’ll be watching again but I didn’t remember anything about Jackie who I assumed would be seen as higher than Tony any at that age.

Anyone else think the nerdy chunky kid at Tony’s school that paid his gambling bet then was showed in the band reminded them of a young Bobby Bacala? The mannerisms seemed dead on.

Moltisanti translates from Italian to "many saints"

There will definitely be more movies, or maybe even a series. Michael Gandolfini proved he is worthy of playing Tony. The casting overall was incredible. I thought Jr was great, but I've always seen him as a chump.

The fact Chase just signed a new contract with HBO, coupled with Michael Gandolfini saying he would like to play Tony again.....seems to me we are gonna get Sopranos prequel series on HBO that shows all the years after Many Saints, leading into when The Sopranos started. That would be f***ing EPIC

Please Please Please let this happen

HBO Max. So after watching sober, who was the kid that called Tony Joe jerk off when he called Dicky for some Rolling rock?

And I did see that Jackie was with Tony when they took the ice cream truck. So that was cool to see they were around. It’s crazy to have seen Tony try to keep Jackie Jr out of the life the same way Dicky wanted to keep him out after Sal told him.

Seems Sal could see through Dicky’s BS too by telling him to stay away from Tony after seeing all the destruction around him by saying “what kind of god” in a somewhat sarcastic tone.

bottom line, honestly if you like the show and didn’t like this, what exactly were you looking for?

I wouldn't say I didn't like it but I thought it could have been way better. It makes a lot more sense if you think of it as "a Sopranos story" instead of some kind of prequal. Yes there are Sopranos characters in it and some of the same story lines are touched on but it didn't answer a huge amount of questions I thought they would address.

Spoilers ********

Where is Tony B? Feech LaManna? Sticking up the card game? They showed Carmela for like 2 seconds. Silvio's bald character was whack. Plus I can't believe any guy, regardless of race, could talk that much s*** to a bunch of mob guys then cuckold and take a shot at a top made guy without getting killed. Instead the end shows the guy on up and up. That didn't sit right.

Tony B was mentioned. This was before Tony was any part of this “thing”. The card game highjack was clearly him being involved and trying to make his way, and I believe Jackie Sr was apart of it too.

I fell for the hype and wasted two hours watching this. I wanted to quit about a quarter of the way through but said, nope, this has got to get better. It didn't.

He was like a father figure to him while Johnny was in the slammer.

Sopranos is probably my favorite series of all time. I've watched the full series 3 times.

The movie was well done, a bit slow at times but there were some awesome scenes and references. I think to truly enjoy the movie you have to watch the series first.

The ending had all the makings of having more to come. I think we will likely see a series on HBO in the coming year or so with JG's son picking up a larger role as Tony grows into a man.

Finally watched this tonight. Loved it and can't wait for more. Like Star Wars, LOTR, and Breaking Bad, I'll watch whatever they churn out.

Hot take: I liked young Paulie and Syl's characters/actors. They were a little over the top, but that's exactly what they were in the original series. Comic relief.

Just watched it and didn't care for it very much. The best of it was learning some of the family back story. The rest of it seemed like some woke mash up of the Sopranos with Shaft & New Jack City. The story was pretty thin and I wasn't at all invested in the characters who got killed. The original series told great stories and it mattered when *****, Christopher, etc. got bumped off.

If you didn’t like it, I don’t get it. It was really cool and well done. Filling in some gaps, history and relationships was gratifying.

And @DSmith21 of course it mattered when Chrissy got bumped, you had been watching him for 83 hours of tv time, not 2. Now the killing of ***** was fantastic television all the way around.
