Yes, I am not talking about the rest of the world...
number of PSU wrestling fans vs. number of PSU MBB fans.

wrestling > MBB

I am willing to guess of the 6.63M people watching did not care if PSU was on the court or if it St. Francis.

That hurdle is as consistent as the sun rising in the east. Sad to say.
If someone could wave a magic wand and either keep the wrestling team as dominant as they are now or make the basketball team relevant, most people would choose making the basketball team relevant.

Sorry dude, very few people outside of PA and Iowa care about wrestling. It’s just not a popular sport whether Penn State is a dynasty or not. Nobody where I live even know Penn State is a dynasty.
Olympic wrestling, 6 men's freestyle weights, 6 woman's freestyle weights and 6 Roman greco weights. Possible 18 gold medals for team USA. Cael through the NLWC, has built one of the premier training centers for athletes with Olympic and World championship aspirations.

Men's and Women's Bball only 2 possible golds for team USA. Jump on the train because Cael has it rolling!

I do not disagree...
what is good about basketball season for a Penn State fan?

... a Penn State fan can watch wrestling.

That is all I am saying. As it stands, right now and for my entire life, there has been no reason to be a Penn State basketball fan (outside of a few random seasons). If some one is a basketball fan that is great. But being a Penn State basketball fan makes no sense and very few people are.

There’s a bunch of gymnastics medals too but I don’t care about that either.

The problem with watching Penn State wrestling is that it’s still wrestling. Even winning doesn’t make it not boring.

If Penn State had a world class gymnastics team, that would be better to watch than the current Penn State MBB team.

Same with Penn State basketball. It is not good. There is no compelling reason to watch it.

You’re missing my point completely. I know our bball team is bad…I’m not saying everyone should watch them play. What I’m saying is having a great wrestling program is not the answer for most people.

But it is the best thing we have during basketball season. That is my point. It might be the best option out of a bunch of terrible options*, but it is still the best a Penn State basketball fan has.

I gave you 3 options. Here are some more... Maybe volunteer at a soup kitchen or the SPCA. Change your fandom to a team that has a MBB program that is competitive.

The high of the win and the excitement over Terry Smith can’t be allowed.

Great win! Smith is getting the most out of these guys. Smith is all class and humble. Joe-409! The players love Smith. They want to play for him. Smith has done a great job.

Smith can’t be the guy. He’s merely beating teams he’s supposed to beat. It’s just nebby. The commits already left.

So much for feeling good about Penn State. I must be new around here.

😞

I can’t change my fandom, but I do watch other teams play, mainly Kentucky because I watched three of their players while they were in high school.

It's a self-loathing group here. They believe a guy like Pat Kraft who had no association with the university until like 3 years ago "gets it". If Pat can't see the gem that is Terry Smith right in front of his eyes maybe he needs to pack his bags and head back to Temple

Then another option is to stay on message boards and complain.
😉

I find it fascinating that people will divorce their spouse, change religions, etc., but not change their Fandom. This is not specific to you. I don't know you.

But just generally people will change some very important things, but Fandom is not one of them.

No matter what happens, that win feels pretty damn good. We had some idiot Corn fans behind us for 3 quarters, but in the end they were long gone and Penn State finally won a game at Beaver Stadium. It sure as hell beat walking back to the car talking about 3-9.

You don't have to love the school you went to forever either. It is just a game. If it is that loathsome change something.

You can go get another degree if you need that connection.

You can’t change that first girl (boy) you loved either... but you do not have to stay with her (him) forever.

Why would I change just because the bball team is bad? If that was the case, I would have given up on them 50 years ago.

I don't know why, but you posted about 50 times about how it is not a good thing that it is basketball season. So, something seems like a change for a positive reaction would be worthwhile.

Also, the basketball team hasn’t nearly been as bad as some like to portray (for whatever reason).
It has had its seasons. 2001 was great when I was there. There is just no consistency.
They make a tournament and the. only win a handful of conference games for the next 6-7 years.

... 6... 7. 😆

What I learned in this thread is that we suck at everything except wrestling, and the only reason we don't suck at wrestling is because not a lot of schools do it.

Yet I still try to make every Penn State sporting event within reasonable driving distance. I hate myself.

2011 with Talor Battle. 2020 if not for COVID. A couple of NCAA caliber teams that couldn’t get it done in the regular season but won the NIT.

I am (was) not impressed with NIT. I thought it stood for Not In Tournament.

I think there have only been 3 or 4, maybe not even that many, years when there was a winning conference record.
It is tough to watch with the inconsistentcy. One night they will beat a good team but the next game get blown out by a terrible team. Then go on a losing streak.

When you play in arguably the deepest conference in the country with a ton of schools that care deeply about college basketball (when your fans care little in proportion), winning conference records are extremely difficult to come by.

And welcome to college basketball. Teams all over the country lose to lesser teams, then turn around and pull a big upset. It’s much different than wrestling where you can pick the result of a dual with 90+% accuracy..much more variance (and hence why many like it so much).

Im not knocking you when i say this. Its a general observation. High level wrestling is very technical. And is very hard for casual fans to understand. Thats why many find it boring, even in higher scoring matches. Hence wrestling is a niche sport, always will be. Penn State, OK St and Iowa are probably the only teams that sell out regularly. Most other teams wrestle in front of a thousand people, maybe.

I thought that first paragraph was about wrestling...

There are lots of upsets in wrestling.

Of course if one is looking only at the team score many meets are not close, but there are 10 matches where one guy is getting 3 to 6 team points and the other is getting 0. Although each match may have been very close and way more entertaining than the team score may indicate. A 30-0 team score seems like a blowout but each match could have been decided in overtime.

I was talking about team results.

I mean, realistically, how many teams went into the wrestling postseason thinking they had a realistic chance at winning the National title last season? 1? It can be a very predictable sport at that level (from a team result standpoint). I wish that more schools cared about wrestling, as it would likely make it more exciting.

Yeah team results are often easier to predict.

Wrestling, being an individual sport, the team score is like the medal count in the Olympics. If that is what you are watching it is not that exciting. It just makes a nice headline.

* added: there are years when the team score is exciting, 2018 as an example.
