I am beating a dead horse, gang. Please bear with me.

1) We have a demonstrably strong defense.
2) Some commentators claim that A/FG is a meaningful statistic when viewing offensive effectiveness.

No. A/FGM is worthless.

Tonight’s new evidence.

Our ‘Cats team ranks 354 out of 363 Division 1 teams in opponent A/FGM.

That does not mean teams “run their offense well” against us. Full stop.

Rant over.

Great win tonight. Great game, Boo! Great game, Brooks! This is a gutsy, experienced, hustling team.

The defense, if run correctly, is set up so you have to make a difficult cross court pass to beat it. The whole concept of this defense is to crash down low and have them make the difficult pass and if they do so be it. So you’ll see lots of assists against us due to that fact.

I think the idea behind that stat (Assists / Made Field Goal) is that its tells you if the team is working to get a good shot, as opposed to a team where guys go one-on-one.

If you think about it, when we double the guy with the ball, they start looking for the open man, so that leads to more assists on shots that actually go in. Of course we create more turnovers too.

My issue PWB is the only thing that being #1 in the country in A/FGM is that you are last in the country in dribble drive baskets, single person fast breaks and rebound put-backs. There is no qualitative difference in how the baskets are scored.

I agree with those who note why our defense gives up a lot of assists. It just has 0 bearing on whether our defense (or other teams’ offense) is performing well.

It depends on the D. For some it is a valuable stat For other D approaches it is not. It is part of the story but not the whole story

I don't think it means much as a defensive stat.
Its a stat for offense - and I think you can use it as an indicator for how well they share the ball, but obviously not foolproof.

Hey, *could* it mean that we make teams work more? Seems like it does.

Who else is in the top decile?
