Gabe a badass at the height he's at. 74, 84 and 97. He's goes toe to toe with the top ranked guys at all weights! Gabe at 74 will be a threat next year to win it all.
He will have to have a much more disciplined off season than the disastrous one last year when he was temporarily kicked off the team. He can do it, and has a good family and coaches willing to help him do it.

He has clearly not consulted with @paednoch23 who knows everything about his case.
You don’t need to know everything about his medical record. The guy was right, but Ben definitely has a PMA and could beat the odds and be a 20+ year guy, just not common. It boils down to him maybe living out a dream of being a head coach at a top program like Iowa, versus being more cautious with an easier life style to add a few more years to live. Decisions he and his family have to make. I still think he’s just trolling us with this coaching crap.

We aren’t freaking doctors, dude. And neither are you. We aren’t reading his medical reports. Neither are you. Askren and his docs make this call. Not morons on message boards—that includes me and you.

Well of course you do. Who the hell wouldn’t listen to an actual doctor who’s worked on your case?

“Meh…going to ignore how I’m feeling and what my doctor tells me. Doc Google and anonymous message board morons say this, so that’s what I’m doing.”

Not at all surprised you supported. 😂

Why are people insistent Jordan Burroughs would be a great option? Has he coached anywhere previously or at least expressed a great interest in it? Previous coaching experience isn’t always required, but you better at least have the passion for coaching. Is the desire of some for him to coach simply because he was a great wrestler?

Not trying to be snarky, just genuinely asking the question.

I love Jason, high character individual. Knows the secret sauce too! Askren, Dake or Nolf. For some reason I'm not sure about Burroughs. No, it's not because he's black. I just don't get the vibe from him. I could be massively wrong.
I'll take any of the above, I'd be very excited if Burroughs was our new head coach next year.
We need a change.
You think the new head coach would retain Star and Telford?
Haha no. Nor should they, bring in guys they want.

Askren is just having fun and probably at Iowa fans expense. Watch this video from only a few weeks ago, especially around the 3 min mark. He says he can't even attend his kids tournaments. He isn't coaching a D1 team anytime soon.

Thank you for posting this. It clears up a lot of us morans speculation. Including mine.

So I was never really a big Askren fan. Not sure quite why, but it was probably because of the steady stream of criticisms he directed at Iowa wrestling over the years, some deserved, some over the top. But I find him very likable in these videos. He's a good interview. He's natural around his wife and kids. He's very relaxed, smiles a lot, and seems to enjoy life and have fun. Can't imagine what he went through. I'm rooting for him.

This was actually great advice for Gabe — and it was delivered the right way.

It diplomatically says: you are, and always have been, an elite wrestler — but the difference between being elite and being a perennial contender is improving one specific thing.

And the key point is this: Gabe already has everything needed to make that improvement — strength, speed, mat awareness, competitiveness, and desire. The question isn’t can he do it. It’s: what’s he waiting for?

Yes, it’s easy to point to coaching, and some of that criticism may be fair. But responsibility also sits with Arnold. He’s at the end of his wrestling career — even when you factor in post-collegiate goals. This is the stage where wrestlers stop waiting to be coached and start making independent adjustments.

That’s what great wrestlers do.

In reality, collegiate coaches aren’t there to reinvent athletes - especially when you now see true freshman on the senior world team, successful before collegiate coaches have ever touched them. Their primary value is fine-tuning. They don’t teach takedowns from scratch. They don’t suddenly install a duck-under or ankle pick if it’s never been part of an athlete’s arsenal. If that were the case, everyone on the team would wrestle with Keddy’s stand-up, Juergen’s ankle pick, and Lincoln’s boot scoot.

The separation happens when the athlete identifies the missing piece — and owns the work to fix it.
Last week gabe had it going on. He is a lot quicker than i thought and he was offensive minded. Completely different wrestler.

He's not backing down from talking about it, so why should we stop considering it as an option?

Bringing it up once ehh ok he’s just messing around. Continuing to bring it up and there’s some truth there. I’m not asking Ben to come in and go live go’s with guys. It’s his mind, I bet he can bring in young guys that can roll around and show what Ben’s mind is saying.

Nolf is the only one I’ve heard express interest in being a head coach, and has a plan in mind already, much of which he learned being part of the Carl machine, and also has people in mind he wants on his coaching staff. Has anyone ever heard Dake or JB talk like this about their plans on coaching. Even our own Spencer Lee sounded a little ticked in an interview where he said he doesn’t know why people just assume he wants to be a coach.
Bring in someone who Spencer looks up to, that might keep him around. Remember, Mocco is coming to Iowa largely based on his relationship with Tom and Terry.

I think the Team would see instant success if you start replacing Telford, Dennis, Terry and Morningstar piece by piece until you found a dynamic group. Tom isnt the problem, its the staff that has no ability to push back. And they all offer the same thing to the athletes. There is no diversity of thought

Changing subordinates isn’t going to change that dynamic. Who will they answer to?

How in the hell do you read my response and come up with this? I stand by saying I still think all this coach talk from him is just trolling Iowa fans.

Spencer and Nolf have trained together and seem to have a good relationship and mutual respect for each other.

I love Spencer, but I’m willing to lose him at this point, if it means getting this program in the right direction.
