The OC Mike Shula situation

Why do we have such a weird situation w OCs?? Kurt Roper. Satterfield. Loggans. Now Mike Shula inherits Superman at QB, some athletes at WR, but seems we havent developed any RBs, OL or a backup QB at all.

Shulas career has been a stretch of 2-3 year pit stops, nothing long term. A disastrous stint as Bamas HC. He was “Cam Newtons coach” which seemed to land him this job. Other than the Bama disaster he hasnt coached in college only NFL. Which means he has very little experience developing 18-20 year old players. And I think thats what we are seeing. In the NFL, those guys show up developed from playing college ball.

Just seems our offensive guys are stuck and not developing

We don't have the talent at OL, you can only develop so much, but there are play calls and formations that can be called to offset this OL deficiency, but even that only goes so far. I would disagree that we have Superman at QB, his passing is not where it should be, but he is on the run from the second he gets the ball. And without a proficient OL, the RB's don't have a chance. You make great points but we have been blamng coaching here ever since Spurrier left, we just don't have the needed talent and depth at all positions. A few "great" players gets you nowhere in the SEC, and I go back to what I said on another post here, our recruiting is always ranked 10th or lower in the SEC, we will never compete in the SEC with that.

I'm not a cheerleader for Shula. But until we get rid of Teasley (who was recommended by Marcus Satterfield), resurrecting Bill Walsh from the dead would not help enough..

He coached the OL under Satterfield at a previous stop where Satterfield was the Head Coach (Tennessee Tech).

I meant to say the previous stop where Satterfield was the Head Coach (Tennessee Tech) with Teasley being his OL coach. Of course, not surprisingly, Satterfield got fired from that job. Yes he is still screwing us over.

I get it, but we don’t have years to figure this thing out. We can’t replace our offensive line coach next year and wait on Shula because then we have to wait two seasons to find out because you give the new OL two years to show results. That means we’ll be three years into Shula’s 3rd year deciding whether or not he’s a good OC. I say just make a clean break with it this year. Start from scratch on offense next season.

I understand. But look at Beamer's history as a Head Coach. Has he ever jettisoned someone after only one season? I can't think of one. And my guess is that he and Shula have bonded as coaches trying to escape from their respective Dads' shadows. So, I would not get my hopes up about a change there. Teasley, on the other hand, is a dead man walking. He is a pee wee football coach who has never accomplished anything significant in his coaching career. I'd be satisfied with just a change there, though I am not high on the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator either.

You should watch the play that Sellers was injured on. It's out there. No one accounted for the linebacker. Not sure in the offense who is making the call at the line. I'm guessing Sellers although we will never know. A little O line zone blocking could go a long way.

Oh , I've seen it several times, yes, nobody picked up the linebacker, may have to leave a back in the backfield some, but there are are many schemes that can be put in place to help Sellers and the OL., and ik they are looking at all of that.

He shouldn't have to be doing this constantly. It's cool that he can, but we need to protect our star player Heisman candidate.

People forget that Sellers was like a magician last year repeatedly escaping from trouble. Defensive Coordinators have learned how to defense him by now. Illinois figured him out last year with weeks to prepare. Others have taken note of that. I'm not optimistic for the rest of the season.

Regardless of what you or I think or say, he was widely viewed as one of the favorites to win the Heisman early in the season. Constantly running for his life and free-running rushers doesn't help that or the team. Do you enjoy having a bad OL?

Sellers is very good but he isn't close to Heisman good. Pre season hype means nothing. A true Heisman quality qb would have put up video game numbers against VT and SC State even with a suspect OL. Carson Beck has 831 yds passing, 7 tds, 1 int. Sellers has 431 yds passing, 2 tds, 1 int. Beck's numbers have come against two ranked opponents and one cupcake. Sellers numbers are against a team that fired its coach after three games, a cupcake and the traditional SEC doormat.

I'm not saying Beck is going to win the Heisman but his numbers are actually Heisman consideration worthy.

I feel what you're saying, but... regardless of what you or I think about his current numbers, the national outlook is that he is a Heisman candidate/contender. I think he has some great natural abilities; but has some polishing to do in order to ever have a shot at winning and our OL play doesn't help him in any way, shape, or form. He's definitely captured national attention and the eye of the media.

Maybe someone has an explanation. How is it that Clemson got Garrett Riley while we got Shula. No, Riley has not worked out. But he had a good reputation prior to going to Clemson. The same is true about OL coach Matt Luke. He too had a good reputation prior to going to Clemson, though he too has not worked out so far. Does Clemson just open up its bank vault when looking for coaches whereas we go real cheap? Is Clemson just more committed to having a great football program? I really, really don't get it.
