Its a major championship in my eyes. Looking forward to it, Tiger tees off Thursday at 1:49 with defending champion Kaymer and past champion Scott.

I was there the year Stenson romped. Pretty cool week but Sunday was anticlimactic. Parked out between 17 green and 18 tee all day for a 6 shot no drama ending.

Huge tourney... great field... but I just don't like it. TPC has always seemed too forced if that means anything. I don't even mind 17 but that event just feels manufactured.

I used to feel that way, but the course has matured and the event has grown on me over the years. One of my favorite tour events and nearly always produces a great winner. Moving to May was a hell of a good idea.

Bar none the toughest course I have ever played. Narrow fairways and fast greens. You have to be able to play multiple ball shapes around that course which is not easy for the average amateur.

Have a few friends who played on tour that said its one of the favorite events for the pros because of the purse and how well they treat them during the week. Also said the greens were the fastest they ever played on.

I agree with Tiger: The Players is not a major. I'm guessing it eventually will be, however, because the tour is pushing for it. First by putting it in the same category as a major in the new HOF qualifications. And it seems they've asked all the talking heads at the Golf Channel to pump it up. No way they'd all be in agreement otherwise.

The Players is a major except for it being called one. For me there isn't even a debate, it has everything and more in what we deem major golf tournaments.

If you want to tell the PGA to go get pumped and replace it with The Players going forward, fine. But it's ******** to add a fifth major after all these years, and even worse if they try to retroactively count past Players titled as majors.

^ Rack, Beavis.

The Players isn't a major, and even if it was "declared" one at some point, it still wouldn't feel like one, at least for a long *** time.

Stupid idea. It's plenty prestigious as is.

I don't get too worked up about Golf stuff, but I'd be furious if they made it a Major. Even if they didn't retroactively count it as a Major, it would eff up the history books from here on out. It's a good tournament, it's absolutely not a Major. Why the need to try and categorize it as one?

Majors have been evolving for years. It wouldn't eff up the record books. The Western Open used to be considered a major, british and us ams majors, some used to say the north and south open was a major. Just because we have sat on 4 for a long while doesn't mean it has to stay that way forever. And it won't, we will keep on evolving with majors just like we have in the past and the Players will become one.

Exactly where does it eff up the books? Jack gets one more than Tiger? Where else would it even matter. To any added to other players it won't mess anything up.

Evolving my ***. When something hasn't changed in 55-60 years, especially in sports, that isn't evolution.

That doesn't help your case.
I'm not saying it's right but it happened. I gave up on tradition in sports about 20 years ago. The home run records mean absolutely nothing anymore in baseball. Forget steroids. The ball is livelier than ever, the pitching is so diluted it's as bad as ever and the ballparks are way, way smaller than they used to be. Nobody seems to care about that. The passing records in the NFL don't mean anything anymore because the NFL has done everything it can to do to make defense illegal. It's as popular as ever. Sorry to break this to everybody but if tradition ever did exist in sports it died a long time ago at the hands of money. The Players will be another major very soon. Deal with it or quit watching.

Pitching diluted? That's where ya lost it.

You definitely can't count past players as a major though...can't make the tourney more important and for larger stakes after the thing was played.

Crazy that Tiger also won The Players in 2001 right before winning The Masters and completing The Tiger Slam. If it ever did retroactively become a major it would be 5 straight during that unreal stretch of golf.

They did with the Masters. It wasn't a major the first 10 to 15 years it was played.

Doesn't make it right! :D
4 is a nice warm fuzzy number. But I think having one major each month from May to August is warm and fuzzy as well. For me it just comes down to lining up the best players in the world on a challenging course and saying have at it boys. Great course, great field, big purse, great atmosphere, great past champions and great pressure means a major. It is heading that way as more and more are saying it is every year and rightfully so.

No, it doesn't. In that case, put WGC Bridgestone and it's history before as WS of Golf as a major if you want to compare past champions, for example.

Craig Perks or Todd Hamilton? Who has the bigger win? If the Players is a major, then they are equal, according to your philosophy.

Lee Janzen...very well known for his two US Open's. Oh wait...anyone know he also won the Players in the mid 90's?

The Players is a great tournament on the schedule, and with it's new date, it fits nicely after The Master. Provides great drama for the fans, but for a course that you see each year, how many people know more than a couple of holes? Bay Hill and Muirfield are much better than Sawgrass.

Your passion is admired, but your argument is weak.

/sprinkles.

How do you do the spoiler
When you hit reply...there is a plus sign in a square box two over from smiley face.

Hit that. If you want it to just say spoiler, hit continue and dont type anything in, then after you have hit continue you write or post a picture or do anything between the brackets
You're welcome

While we are at it, lets add the Travers and the Wood

Funny, ever since they got tough on roids, scoring in baseball is WAAAAYYYY down. HRs are also way down. Agree with some of your points, but the one re baseball is way "off base".

Yeah, I mean nowadays you have more guys throwing 95+ than ever...you have closers, middle relievers, specialists, LvL subbing, pitch counts etc...much tougher on hitters in todays game.

Love Sawgrass. Ponte Verde is a very nice place but well beyond my means.

Watch these players this week: Matsuyama, Fowler, McElroy, Dustin Johnson, Jimmy Walker. Not exactly going out on a limb. Matsuyama doesn't have a poor club in his bag. Justin Thomas is going to win something.

I get that but there are still 40 extra major league pitchers now then there were when I was a kid.

Any other top 15 world players we should keep an eye on this week? That Jordan fella?

Yeah, as I said, not exactly going out on a limb. But, they are the best players in the world. Didn't feel Spieth this week. Easy to say now since he is three over. But he will probably come on and play well on Friday.

Did they do a moment of silence for Calvin Peete before every group or just the group with the lone black golfer?

^ wondered the same thing..pretty sure it's just the black golfer, as I've been watching since 1 and it's the first time I've seen it. #racist
