I hope Northwestern loses every game until they reverse this stupid policy. This is embarrassing and infuriating! Our most passionate and loyal fan and they tell her to stifle herself.

I trust the NU students will come up with an appropriate retort to this.

Ahhhh, Welsh Ryan Arena ... where fun goes to die.

So let me get this straight: Her screaming was okay at Allstate Arena. But now that NU has created an intimate atmosphere, we should check with the noise police to see what fan distractions are acceptable.

I suspect it was the complaints from the TV partners that did it... somehow I don't picture them shifting to that due to complaints from our (or certainly not IL) fans.

While it didn't bother me and I certainly wouldn't have "silenced" her, I do have to say that I think I caused plenty of noise in our sporting events when an undergrad without shrieking like that. You can still have plenty of an impact cheering and making noise, just at a somewhat lower frequency. Thanks to Emily for her continued support. And Go Cats.

I believe the appropriate response to this is for the student section to keep a continuous scream going for the next home game. They can alternate rest periods so that no one has to scream as long and as hard as Harriet, while the scream can maintain its continuity.

Someone brought a white board last night and was writing love letters to Hawkeyes throughout the night. A silent protest, perhaps?

Maybe they should all remain silent and hold up signs that say "#FreeEmily". Or better yet, "#HashtagFreeEmily".

The only time I scream at NU basketball is in horror after seeing the final score.

not sure. He was sitting courtside and one of the refs went and talked to one of the NU facilities/athletics staff and pointed to him, which lead to the NU person going over and talking to the guy on two future occasions during timeouts.

The "guy sitting courtside" was none other than Mark Walter -- Dodgers owner and one of NU's biggest donors. It was really bizarre. Here's what I saw: About midway through the second half, one of the refs went over to the NU staffer in charge of security (I don't know his name, but he's at every game in a shirt and tie), and pointed over to the courtside seats. The security guy then headed over there. I assumed he was going to eject, or at least give a stern warning to, a couple of Hawkeye fans who were in the second courtside row. They were being loud and demonstrative the whole game -- nothing too obnoxious, but I thought maybe they had said something to the refs or to an NU player. Instead, the security guy sat in the empty seat next to Mark Walter and started chatting with him. I hadn't noticed any sort of misbehavior by Walter at all. They chatted for a while, with Walter smiling and laughing. After a pretty long time (10 minutes or so), the security guy left, and Walter stayed. Really strange.

This was one of the most pathetic episodes from a referee I've ever seen. Oglesby was legit mad at Arey when told Arey wasn't going to eject the fan - it was obvious from afar it was a heavy hitter, though from our vantage point we couldn't tell who it was. I mean, Oglesby was demonstrably upset that Arey wasn't going to do anything about it. The other two refs stayed far, far away from those multiple conversations, which just tells you nothing serious actually happened. (The idea that a billionaire MLB owner would do something meriting any kind of response from a ref during a college basketball game is laughable in itself.)

After taking a foul off the board when a player elbows another one in the face and missing a finger roll to the baseline, perhaps Oglesby should have had his eyes and ears elsewhere than the sideline.

He was the same doofus who went to Collins after CC and the crowd clapped stridently after the stripes decided to finally call a foul against Iowa. The security issue with the the patron occurred shortly thereafter. IMO, aside from his horrific supervision of the game, these two incidences demonstrate a lack of mental toughness or mental insecurity for this man to ref in a B10 arena. Further, there were two different games called by the refs. 1st half flowed, 2nd did not. He was a main culprit of this change. Please call both halves in a similar fashion.

As to getting kicked out, pointing at the ref and swearing with reference to a mother or a female dog are good recipes for outster from an arena. This past weekend 2 parents at my daughter’s 8th Grade girl’s basketball game were escorted from the facility for use of such language. The funniest part was that they were cheering for a Lutheran school which markets itself as an exemplary adherent to Christian values.

I've been a rapidly noisy and annoying fan in my time. I've been told to please be quiet at football games. And yet, this news makes me happy. Her special brand of screaming was a real drag on the whole experience for players, patrons, recruits, etc. I love her enthusiasm for NU sports and she is no doubt a better fan than me. But if I went to every game there was as a superfan and brought a chalkboard and scraped it with a metal rake throughout the entire game, I'd expect to be asked to stop as well.

I’m glad the majority share my disbelief that NU is trying to silence a diehard fan and a very nice person. After the Illinois football game, she was on the field 30 minutes after the finish talking to some of the players. The only other students nearby were players or managers.

We have no homecourt advantage in our brand new facility specifically designed to generate one. There is an incentive every game to get students to the game and sadly, too few show up. Then we muzzle one of the few people who are trying to generate an advantage and show up to many athletic contests. It’s really insane.

Love her enthusiasm and spirit and wish her no ill will. But I am glad the screaming has ended, it was really irritating. Emily can cheer loudly in a more “conventional” manner just like the rest of us. Go ‘Cats.

I meant your generalization as to the fact how you feel about a certain point is necessarily share by every single fan, player, recruit, etc.
