No, but she had mental issues, in which current laws should have prevented her from obtaining a firearm. Clearly, our current laws aren't being enforced. So how would a new law, taking my Constitutional right of owning an AR-15, make a difference?

I don't think it is a deflection. I think you are correct that most violent crimes are committed by sane people and also there are serious issue with mental health. In most of the school shootings the bad actors have had mental issues. If you expand it to all violent crimes the issue shifts to repeat offenders. Different solutions.
In today's world everyone has a mental illness because we just change the definitions to suit our needs. Ever notice how many kids have ADHD today compared to 25 years ago? Or how the number of anxiety diagnoses spike in the state immediately following medical marijuana? What do you think happens in Virginia with the number of anxiety cases in Virginia when weed is legal next year?
People with mental issues still have their second amendment rights. It just depends on the type of mental issue that triggers the denial of rights. I don't know what mental illnesses any of the school shooters had.
