The SMU Mustang Band is very unique in that they are essentially a large jazz band with typical jazz big band instrumentation. That's why they have smaller numbers. Don't under estimate them. They have some great musicians. As is the case, the best trumpet, trombone and sax musicians in the world are typically jazz musicians. I've never heard them perform but the SMU Mustang Band has the reputation if being very entertaining. And yes, they have a variety of uniforms as they are known as "The best dressed band in the land."
When you are from the Metroplex, that is your entire world. Kind of like New Yorkers who only see the world from the 50's to the 114th Street and in between Park Avenue and Broadway.
I dislike the booing. I thought we did not used to boo opponents and band when I was a student in the 80s, I thought it was sort of a PSU tradition
Son1 and I did a college visit to Stanford (Andrew lucks last home game) and sat near the band. They were so awesone. Maybe smu has a similiar vibe

Living in DFW I have several friends who graduated from SMU. I attended a game on campus this year and had a nice time. You are correct that their band is technically sound and entertaining. Their team was solid with an above average defense and quick strike offense. We simply need to establish the run early as we have a physical advantage in the trenches and should wear them down. We should be ready for a tough match early as they are not shy with gadget plays etc.
Here they are at the Alamo bowl mocking Texas. They get some boos but at the 2:20 mark, the Stanford band put down Whataburger - that is when the boos got really loud.
