The thing about Schiano

Watching the game today I had zero hope that Rutgers would win no matter how many times Michigan shot themselves in the foot. My only hope is Keli Zinn will end this misery after the Michigan State game so we can finally move on and bury the last 7 years. If Zinn is Penny Wise and Pound Foolish bringing back Schiano for the 2027 campaign, I'll go pick up a new hobby on Saturday afternoons until this is over. Schiano NEVER beats any team that actually matters.

In this second stint with Rutgers is his complete inability to ever surprise us with an upset win. Even as the game stayed close, you knew we had no shot. The hopelessness is crushing. And I love Greg. I was happy he came back. And I’m sad it’s gone this badly
First stint was the same other than USF 2007 and even then we are left knowing that USF fell apart badly after that game.

The 1.0 era was characterized by winning games by having more talent, which sometimes was a product of strong player development but 1.0 was not stealing games either. No upsets.

I’m sure somebody will come up a game or two that I forgot but 1.0 ALWAYS was blown out by top teams other than 2006 and I really cannot remember any strong wins. We’d go 5-0 vs the weak OOC schedule and beat bottom half of the Big East most of the time.

1.0 never beat WVU. He came close. He almost beat Illinois a few years ago but blew it as well. He’s also very unlucky in those close games against the higher ranked teams but he got lucky in the famous Louisville game with Ito getting a second kick. Back when bowl games mattered more, he couldn’t win the 2005 game against an ASU team that had the flu.

Rich Rod's WV's spread was the kryptonite for Schiano's aggressive style on defense. He would send some guys in on stunts and the QB would squirt upfield for 15 yds. Every year you could be sure RU would beat USF and lose to WV. Greg's best games on defense were against the option teams. He could take Army and Navy teams with 400 yds rushing/game and stuff them for rushing in the 100s

Except for 2008 when he couldn't even beat them with multiple NFL players on both sides of the ball.

2008 was a strange year for first few games . RU began season awful vs Fresno and UNC. That was when the media ambushed GS as season began. They tried to slime Rutgers and Schiano who they accused of under the table dealings. McCormick threw Schiano and Mulcahy (who would resign over scandal) under the bus. RU had stardust over the program and its triangle of coach, AD and president. It all ended in first weeks of 2008. The team played awful at the start (1-5 first six games) and lost to Navy in a pinch 21-23. Those Navy teams were good back then and even when RU beat them some games were close. GS was 6-2 vs Navy. One of best games was when RU won with a Brandon Jones blocked kick. Once back on track RU would win six games in a row including Army that 30-3. I miss the RU vs SA games

Schiano was never winning this game no matter what. Let’s be real.
Michigan tried to give RU the win, but Schiano was a gracious host and refused the charity. Going for it on 4th and 1 from your own 29 with a minute left in the 3rd trailing by 7 was a typical boneheaded Schiano decision. A high-risk low reward move that could not have won the game, but certainly could have lost it. Luckily a false start penalty forced him to punt and allow Michigan to self-destruct a bit. Then he punts on 4th and 8 from his own 42 with just over 3:00 remaining with 2 Time outs. I was screaming, "You are a stupid, stupid man" at my TV several times. Unbelievable. I'm thinking about creating a "Schiano AI" program where you ask it a question and then do the opposite of the advice it gives. "Schiano AI, my car has 110,000 miles and needs transmission and emission control repairs and will cost $3,500.00 to repair. Should I sell it or repair it?". "You should repair it." "Honey, we are selling the car."

But I must admit I was wrong with something I said after Maryland. I said Rutgers only had Penn State and Michigan State remaining who would give the game away like Maryland did. I completely overestimated Michigan. Competent coaching gets RU the "W" here.

Unlucky how?

I was at the ASU game but never knew they were sick.

I like to be fair in my analysis. One of his strengths IMO has been performing well in bowl games. While there is an argument that we were usually playing down and not truly in 50/50 games, I do think that having a multiple week break plays to his strengths as I think one of the things he does well is break down film and one of the reasons why his teams have typically performed in bowl games.

If you take a look at the 2006 schedule it was a joke.
We only had a couple WR injuries too. It is no coincidence that the season with the least amount of injuries wound up being the best season

And thankfully, the OOC schedule was a joke because otherwise, we would’ve lost in the first week based on how close that UNC game was and that season would’ve never happened.

He can’t even do that anymore. He was the DC of the bowl game when KSU rang up video game numbers on his defense. He ruined them.

Schools like Oregon and Indiana have run trick place to pull out wins against inferior Big Ten teams.

Why can’t we?
Because Rutgers is the Big Ten inferior team.

But We do. The completion to the TE Blake was a Schiano trick play. And keen observers see our returners FC signaling with their other arm once or twice a game.

Schiano is much more sneaky than most realize. Sooner or later his tactical wizardry will be instrumental in winning a game. Well, probably later, not sooner. But as long as they Keep Choppin’ it will happen as sure as the sun rises in the north and Switzerland will invade Guam.

GS doesn’t beat ranked teams
GS doesn’t get upset wins
GS doesn’t win in conf consistently
GS is 15/18 seasons with losing conf record
GS has lost to inferior G5 teams
GS has lost to FCS teams

Sum: FS runs a losing program period. He’s just not a winning coach and there is no way to argue he is at this point.

There was a red zone play last year where we put a receiver in motion and it led to an easy TD. At first, I was like…..wow, a trick play! Then I was like….nooo, it wasn’t lol.

No upset wins, you say? Sure, he has done it once when favored to lose by 10 plus points. He's 1-59!!! A fieldhouse would have pumped up those numbers significantly!!!!!

When you list it all out like that, no one can question why he needs to go. If money is the reason he stays, this program should be disbanded.

The 1 out of 60 rate is misleading and unfair. If he did win another of those games his 10+ pt dog win rate would be 100% more than it is. Doubled. Fact. Impressive.

Just one more victory and we’d be having an entirely different conversation. Think about that before you slam the guy.

He’s been the savior of the Rutgers football program twice. No one else in the history of sports can say that.
