Ryan Pritt---

Under Neal Brown WVU is 10-7 in games decide by a touchdown or less. A 58.8% success rate in one score games some serious mental mistakes have cost WVU dearly. Mistake by coaching as well as players.

While 10-7 is fine, programs that challenge for league titles find a way to win more often than not. WVU has yet to finish in top half of the league in touchdown percentage under Brown, finishing 7th at 66% last year a small improvement from 61% in 2020.

For the defense last year WVU led the league allowing touchdowns on 42% red zone attempts, more than 11% better than 2nd place Baylor (53.7%). The defense may not be as strong as last year but it just needs to be good enough for an improved offense.

Brown entering his 4th season with his own recruits play significant roles on both sides of the ball. A new OC in Harrell and Jordan Lesley has emerged as one of the better DC's in the Big 12 and perhaps beyond.

The time is now.

I do think we should see significant progress this year, but something tells me we are still a year away from that 10-11 win season. While our OL is a year older, they still have a couple more years of eligibility, esp considering the COVID year doesnt count. Also, transfer QBs usually play much better their second year in their new spot & familiarity with their new team, players, etc.... ie Will Grier.

So I think we have a 8-9 win season this year, which is good enough to show progress, but I think next year is when we play in the Big12 Championship. Our DBs will be more seasoned, our DL & LB depth will be solid, the only thing Brown will need to pursue heavily in the portal will be 1-2 high impact WR's, and few more pieces(DL, DB, OL) to replace James & BFW mainly... We'll def need at least 1 high-end WR, but if we get a good one, I think next year is our year to seriously compete on a national stage. The team as a whole will just be older, more experienced, and nothing but time will resolve the mistakes learned through trial & error by player's execution. IN the collegiate game, there is no substitute for experience & maturity, aside from speed & shiftiness of course.

Considering WVU is projected for 5.5 wins, I think that is EASY money.... As we should get 8-9 wins this year, but I still think we are 1 year away from reaching that program BUILT(not building) level of talent, experience, & depth consistency. We should see this team continue to improve as the season plays out, which is a good thing as our schedule gets tougher so that should help us be more competitive vs those better opponents.

Looking at this roster, all the new pieces, I think JTD shows us potential this year, but stays for a second year and thats the year when everything really comes together for Brown and staff.. When his era reaches a new level and gets us back on a national stage. That also gives Nicco 1 more year to learn, develop, and mature, so he can take the reigns without a decline in his RS Soph year, giving us 3 years of great QB play.. I think next year is the first year when we begin to compete on a higher level year in and year out.. From a youth perspective, I just think we are 1 year away from really hitting our stride and obtaining those 10-12 win seasons. That said, I absolutely agree this is the year we should see progress, the signs that a 10-12 win team is there, they just need another year before the alignment of 1st string & 2nd string talent upside.

If we only win 6-7 games this year, I would certainly be disappointed, I suppose it depends how the season ends, do we start slow but end on a high note with a few consecutive wins and a bowl win... If thats the case, Ill stick to my prediction, but if its mixed through the season with no in-season progress/improvement, I would absolutely say Brown should be on the hot seat next year. 5 years is long enough to show progress, while technically hes already showed progress given what he inherited, I think the signs need to be there at some point this year that Brown is close to a 10+ win roster..

How Brown has recruited, once we hit that point next year, we should be able to remain at that level with Brown continues to recruit at a good level. So 1 more year until we have mostly experienced Seniors & Juniors on the field, but once we hit that point, we should be set to go on a run for a few years... I suppose we'll see, Ive been very patient and understanding with Brown. WVU has ALWAYS been a development program that heavily relies on experienced upper classmen, and when you inherit one of the youngest and least talented rosters in the P5, thats going to take a few years to begin to resolve and that switch doesnt occur overnight. BUT.... 4 years in and we should absolutely see we have a quality team in Morgantown, they just need 1 more year before the teams experience+talent peaks...

I predict 6-6 or 7-5 depending on this game coming up. Neal Brown buyout is sure to keep him here another 2 years.

WVNews:

If Brown were let go following the 2023 season, he would still be due $12.7 million (the amount of his contract for 2024-26). Were he to be terminated on Jan. 10, 2025, he would receive $7,310,000 (85% of the remaining two years of the contract).

On the flip side, if Brown elects to leave on or before Dec. 31, 2024, he would owe WVU a liquidated damages payment equal to 25% of the remaining total salary figure.

A departure in the final two years of the contract (Jan. 1, 2025 – Dec. 31, 2026) would see him owing 12.5% of the total.

Either way, though, there will almost assuredly be a different contract in place for WVU’s head coach by the time, say, the 2025 season rolls around.

Hey, Volatility: What did you predict WVU's record to be before the 2021 season? TIA
Are you asking my prediction For the 2021 season or for the 2022 season(but before the start of 2021)? Umm.... not sure what I predicted for 2021....

Ive made several posts that outlined a linear progression of wins with a 2 steps forward 1 step back approach. But they were a generic outline of the progression, not so much a year to year prediction.. Maybe theres a post where I make one, but it probably wasnt more then 8 wins. I mean, look at how close we was to 9 wins, if it wasnt for just a few boneheaded plays by Doege or James fumbling vs TTU... So its not like we were blown out in the games we did lose, most was down to the wire and was execution based losses(Jimmies & Joes)

IN all my posts Ive thought year 5 will be a big year with some progress being shown in year 4.

I think we hit 8 maybe....maybe 9 wins this year. Of course thats assuming JTD shows us why he was a 5 star QB and if he remains healthy, and if our DBs are up to par...

But..... to be specific for future criticisms Ill say 8 win season this year. Which I think is enough to show us there is a 10+ win roster in Morgantown once we are starting mostly Juniors & Seniors on the field(which should be next year)... I mean, Nehlen only won 6 games the year before he took us to the National Championship, so its possible to make a big stride in a single year, esp now with the portal if its effectively utilized(nil)...

Ultimately there are a crapload of questions about this team(QB, DB, OL), but I do think we are a lock to win more then 5 games. Which is easy money... Im betting $10K we win more then 5.5 games. I never bet on sports, NEVER, because my career is built upon exploiting probabilities, so I get enough of that with my day job, but I do think Brown is a quality coach, with a good staff, and has enough talent & experience to win > 5 games which puts a nice Christmas bonus in my pocket.

Enough for High Performance Downpipes, Eventuri or ArmaSpeed Intake, Performance Exhaust, & Custom tune for my new G80 M3 Competition... Which should put me at about 700 WHP with E30-E50 blends. Thats good enough for 10.0 - 10.2 in the 1/4mile..

Thats one hellava win/win.... haha.... Ill get the performance mods anyways, but it would be nice if they would be free...

I believe building a program from scratch takes much longer then people are willing to wait. Which is why you see many programs stuck in the 5-7 wins club because they fire staffs every 2-3 years. Starting point also matters and Brown's starting point was about as bad as it could be at WVU from both a talent & experience perspective. For a development program like WVU is simply takes longer because those yearly recruits need a few years before they become high impact caliber players(for the most part).

Ultimately I have faith that Brown can take us to reach our realistic ceiling as a program. BUT.... its not going to happen until the starting 22 are mostly Seniors & Juniors. Which should be next year... and hopefully the start of an era and brand of WVU football that will be revered in years to come, similar to how the 05-11 years are thought of.. We have a few years when we seriously compete on a national level, and a couple of down years but still win our bowl games vs quality opponents.
