Music sucks pretty bad these days but there have always been awful pop songs. Acts like Vanilla Ice, Hanson, Milli Vanilli, Right Said Fred, Toni Basil, Snow, Billy Ray Cyrus, Wang Chung and Rick Astley all managed to crack the top #10 on the pop charts with material that sucked anus.
I agree with everything you said with one exception: There are some really good radio stations still around if you look and they are always listener supported. My go-to stations are WUKY 91.3 in Lexington and WFPK 91.9 in Louisville. It's nice to not get the same thing over and over.Like anything else, popular does not mean quality. Never has! Popular just means it's consumed by many people. McDonalds and Bud Light are popular. Doesn't mean you consume those products and expect high quality. Music is no different. And there are hundreds of outstanding bands out there. You just need to know where to look. Don't expect to find them on the radio.
One problem I run into a lot is that, yes, I can and do search out the newer bands that I believe are good and talented and worth listening to (generally on XM or Pandora). However, the live music scene has really shrunk in the past few years even in a place as big as Houston. There are probably 1/3 fewer venues that have live bands than even 5 or so years ago and a pretty significant percentage of those venues host 'tribute' bands. The artists that tour and fill up the bigger arenas are generally ones that have been around for decades. House of Blues in Houston is still decent for newer bands (although they do lean towards the harder, more metal genres that I don't care for). Blackberry Smoke played here late last year or maybe a bit earlier and I was somewhat unfamiliar with them but thought about going. Cheapest tickets? $90. Hard to come off the hip for $200 to see a band I was still wholly undecided about and really couldn't consider myself knowledgeable about at the time.
Undeserving pop groups/artists who become famous very quickly is the story of pop music. The music business LOVES that business model. They get the vast majority of the cash generated and the artist is forgotten and discarded by the time they get around to negotiating their second contract. The truly great artists who stand the test of time don't make the record companies nearly as much money.

The worst music and the worst movies are always target young girls for their audience. They are the driving force in the worst stuff becoming popular.
This is the truth. To expand further, 13-49 year old females account for more than half of music sales. They're the reason this bro country garbage is so popular.
I think bro country is the worst thing to ever happen to ears. Nothing is worse than a guy who couldn't make it in rock so pretends to be country by wearing skinny jeans, a ball cap and faking a twang.
Cool. how about you just don't listen to pop music
I'd rather listen to 12 minutes of pop music than listen to 12 minutes of some guy complain about pop music.
If you're letting label and radio execs dictate what you listen to today, then that's your own fault. It's never been easier to access the exact music you want to hear than it is right now.
And that dude is annoying af
agreed agreed AGREED. So glad I'm not one of "those" women who love that ish; it's embarrassing.I think bro country is the worst thing to ever happen to ears. Nothing is worse than a guy who couldn't make it in rock so pretends to be country by wearing skinny jeans, a ball cap and faking a twang.
Yeah it's bad no doubt but IMO disco was worse.I think bro country is the worst thing to ever happen to ears. Nothing is worse than a guy who couldn't make it in rock so pretends to be country by wearing skinny jeans, a ball cap and faking a twang.
Pop music sucks! Whatever happened to great bands like Captain and Tennile, Bread, the Grass Roots, and Jefferson Starship??
They just don't make em like they used to I guess.

Wang Chung was legit. They did one of top selling soundtracks of all time. To Live and Die in LA.

that toured as Iron and Wine during the winterI thought the Black Keys were just a White Stripes tribute band

The truth about all music - Listen to what you like, screw what other people think about it.

Yup. Those bands still sell as many records as katy perry and taylor swift...very little good music now; haven't these execs ever wondered why the "old" bands like Boston, Styx, Reo, et al are so popular?
