I have shared this before, and as most of my idiotic ramblings, people generally don’t respond.

But, I ask you to join me at shouting at the TV the next time commentators make some reference to A/FGM being determinative to an offense’s success.

We know what NU’s offense is like this year. Putrid. 197th best in the nation. But, no…some analysts will note (but only when it serves their purpose) that we have assists on 60.1% of our FGM. Good for 27th in the country. Yay! Wow! Awesome! (Said in snarky King George III in Hamilton style).

We also know about Ohio State’s offense. Incredibly good. 2nd best in the country. You know where they stand in A/FGM%. 259th in the country! Don’t you know…they don’t “share the ball”. They are not “running their offense”.

The Top 10 offenses in the country have the following A/FGM rate: 8, 259, 164, 24, 41, 229, 3, 45, 7, 57. Yes, Arizona, Xavier and UConn score very high on this count. Good for them.

Do you know who the top 4 Big Ten teams are in A/FGM? In order: Minnesota, Michigan State, Northwestern, Rutgers.

The only thing being #1 in the country in A/FGM means for certain? That you are dead last in the country in the non-counted stat of (Dribble drive scores + Off. Reb. Stick backs) / FGM. It means nothing about whether the team is a good offense or not.

Please join me in this cause.

Happy New Year!

I'll join you as long as you also add "rebounding margin" to join A/FGM as a less than useful stat.

While many will either (similarly) not reply to me or reply with vitriol to me, I will offer that this is interesting stuff that makes total sense. College basketball is so much more of a 1-on-1 game (spread the floor / beat your man off the dribble / create an advantage to either drive to the hoop or kick out for a 3) - that’s where wins come from. Better offensive teams have better creators, finishers and shooters.

And this stat is more reason to indicate that we do run good offensive sets and don’t just dribble around without a plan.

Dugan - didn’t you create a bunch of NU stats for everybody at one point?

It’s a one game sample but you can kind of see why OSU would not be high on A/FGM.
They looked like they were going to win by 60 after the first 6 minutes. They were sharing the ball, exploiting bad help positioning, getting open shots.

After that, their offense was nothing spectacular IMO. It relied heavily on coming off rolls with a lot of dribbling. Not that that’s a bad offense when you have strong players, it gives the fraction of a second needed for physical players to get into one on one situations going to the basket. What it does not give you is that many assists.

A/FGM means very little regarding offensive efficiency. As it means very little regarding having good or bad sets.
