Putting a team high gives them a huge chance to stay high. Football pre season is much more important but the pre season rankings could be the difference between a top 10 team, or a team with the same record being at 25.

Football season is so much shorter it is hard to break those top 12 numbers (Indiana excluded).
Certain teams are often vastly oer rated based on history (Alabama, Michigan).
Basketball gives more time for movement and alas injuries.

That's right, preseason polls arent perfect so therefore they're useless. What, are you going to let a bunch of people who know the returning starters, transfers, recruits and coaches tell you who's going to be good? You should be just as excited to watch South Carolina vs Xavier in December as you are Duke vs Auburn.
