Very disappointing being cancelled just 5 hours before game time. Here is more info from the local paper. I wasn’t planning on attending in-person but was going to view it on tv. My Methodist minister was excited about attending with tix to the game someone gave him so he must be bummed. A lot of effort went into converting Petco Park to play this inaugural football bowl game downtown so it’s too bad but not totally unexpected with the surge impacting so many events esp in sports and entertainment. Stay safe and healthy everyone.

And now, flights home for many of the fans will likely be cancelled due to COVID among flight crews. The new American phenomenon--the unforeseen two week vacation, to be paid for on credit cards already maxed out.

"The Bruins were down to two interior linemen (Monday) for this game with a converted LB as the back-up nose guard, and were set to play but then had more COVID issues today.”

So on Monday (two days ago) they were down to two interior DL. That would have been the time to pull out.

Missed opportunities for NU--we may be 3-9 this year, but we were 7-2 with COVID. Call, for god's sake, there's only 4 days left!

Agree that a team vote deciding this seems...unscrupulous? Yeah. Unscrupulous.

Poor form by UCLA and its leadership.

What did UCLA coaches and the athletics admins know and when did they know it about players impacted by Covid protocols? Agree that UCLA did not handle this well. The NC State coach in particular was rather upset with UCLA coaches and staff questioning at the Bruins last minute backing out from the game.

The news here said there is an attempt to find a “replacement” team for UCLA but it’s very unlikely one will be found in time for the game to played at a later date. It may be possible that NC State could travel to replace another team in a different bowl game so they may remain in town on standby if another bowl slot opens up for them at the last minute.

Obviously this is just a tweet...I don't know if the comment was made at a press conference or what, but if he said it, then I call bullsh*t on UCLA, which is a team I've historically supported.

That was your first mistake.

NC State promised not to run the ball much, but that wasn’t good enough for UCLA.

Game was officially cancelled this morning after no replacement team could be found. Looking at the pictures of Petco Park I think most of the seats looked like they would have good views/sight lines of the field. The article mentioned NC State offered “not to run the ball much” in response to UCLA’s “decimated”
D-line but UCLA had decided to drop out.

Fully expect other games and events to be cancelled as Omicron surges fueled by the aftermath of holiday get-togethers and travel. Would not be surprised if NC State gets a slot in a different bowl game.

We had 2,500 US deaths related to COVID yesterday, our highest single-day total since mid-October. This is near the peaks of the first wave, when NYC was backing refrigerator trucks to hospital loading docks.

This incredible human suffering has just fallen to the background. The tragedy is totally beyond comprehension at this point.

Hug your family members or, you know, give them a Zoom high five. (Sorry for the downer.)

Having large spectator events, even outdoor events like football games, with no screening or masking requirements has to have impact on spreading omicron. The weeks ahead after the holidays will be very difficult no doubt. I share your thoughts and concerns. All of us are struggling and yearning for a return to some semblance of normalcy and safety.

The way things are working out, maybe NC State ends up in a New Years Day bowl game.

OK, just set the DVR to record today’s Pinstripe Bowl to make sure I will have at least one bowl game to watch.

Notably, no Holiday Bowl officials were quoted in the article saying anything about "UCLA" or "Chip Kelly." I would actually donate money to the Holiday Bowl's charity of choice for a recording of the conversation when the UCLA AD called Bowl officials to tell them, "yeah we took a vote and decided not to play in a few hours."
