one of my good friend's dad was one of the first on Omaha beach. He would break down in tears when he tried to talk about it. Say what you want but I believe that my fathers generation was indeed the greatest. He's been gone 5 years now and he would certainly be disappointed in what is going on in our country right now. He and a lot of other vets might say...." we fought and died for this?". We need to wake up and unite our country and rid ourselves of all the viciousness that exists in our land today. We are still the greatest country in the world and the leader of democracy. We need to quit bickering and start acting like the country that our vets gave their lives for.....just my 2 cents

Just for some perspective, the “Greatest Generation”, fought for 4 years. The current generation has been at war for 18 years and we keep stepping forward and signing up to go over and fight. I’m not throwing shade on the WW2 guys, they earned everything they are credited with. I’m merely pointing out that they’re going to have some competition.

You should see some statistics on combat time between the two. It’s a laughable comparison. What’s changed is strategy and tactics. We no longer throw people into the breach to overwhelm with flesh. HE works really well.

I'm not taking anything away from anyone who made the ultimate sacrifice, but I'm not so sure it is a greater sacrifice than those still living and have lived with the memories for so many years.

Each generation is great. Today's fighting soldier is as good as those that stormed ashore on D-day. After D-day, the war was over in 10 months in Europe. These extended wars takes it's toll on the human body.

“The Greatest Generation,” in my mind, refers to all the people of that generation, not just the military. Taken in that context, i believe there was more of a united determination and willingness to sacrifice to get things done than in my generation or subsequent ones. The overall picture. As to any comparison of different generations of soldiers, any soldier willing to lay their life on the line for the good ol’ USofA has my respect, regardless of when they protected and fought for us.

Really good point about the generational sacrifice. As a country we pivoted everything for the cause during WW2. We haven’t had to do that in this generation or any sense that one. Really solid point.

And that generation had just went through the Great Depression.

Absolutely the reason, imo, learning about and teaching WW2 is such a special and critical lesson.
