I need someone to explain it to me like I'm a child and explain what the alternative to it would be. Why is it so bad for the program?
Really curious to hear the explanation too. I’m not buying it in the least personally, unless someone could explain specifically why JMI would prevent an athlete from signing, especially when athletes signing would potentially benefit JMI and make them more money. Probably more KSR- butthurt created nonsense.

It does seem strange though that both the basketball and football teams are having recruiting problems.

I don't know the entire specifics, but it sounds like the deal is based "in theory" of the amount of money the athletic department should generate. Also the wording makes it seem like JMI can veto anyone we try to sign or at least certain NIL deals they could get.

Like hey, we have all of this money ON PAPER.... but when it comes time to negotiate the real NIL deal with basketball and football recruits/portal guys, it could turn into a Lucy holding the football situation and JMI tells us we don't really have that money to give out.

At least I think those are the doom and gloom scenarios some have pointed out. Maybe it isn't really that bad and it will be a good thing for us. It's embarrassing that there is even uncertainty about the specifics on a deal as important as this. The Barnhart Special. No coach worth anything in this era is going to sign up to coach here without some clarity on what the NIL situation is, and they're going to have to explain it to them in much clearer detail than what has been explained to the fans.

Something to keep in mind, though: has any long-term deal that Mitch has negotiated and signed ever worked out for the benefit of UK and BBN? To me, you can't be "the greatest athletics director in UK history" 🙄 and the flagship programs of football and men's basketball be in the same shape (football) or significantly worse shape (men's basketball) than the day you took over. Mitch = The Wizard of Oz. Great smoke and mirrors routine/PR campaign with Lexington media to trick people into believing that he's this great leader when that just isn't the truth.

Unfortunately it seemed like a really good deal at the time. At least what was made public. It’s starting to look like there was some fine print in terms of limits on other deals were allowed to engage in while under contract with JMI.

At least that’s my very rudimentary understanding

I don't know specifics either but according to Matt, Barnhart sold this as a revolutionary way of handling NIL that would put us ahead of many other programs and here we are a year later and we are still the only program that are a part of this so no one else think it's that great. Secondly, it's hugely disturbing and a gigantic conflict of interest that a someone who is one of our executive ADs (there's a few with that title and I don't know which one) who is married to an executive with JMI. Barnhart has just made one horrific financial mistake after another I don't know if UK can overcome them.

The Governor and/or the legislature needs to demand an investigation into Barnhart, Capiluto and the Board of Trustees. Where is the oversight into these contracts? Why did the BOT agree to them? How were they presented to them? Did UK have a legal team to look at the contracts and why didn't they notice issues like the 60-day term to pay the balance of the coaching contracts? Is it just gross negligence or is someone receiving some grift or kickback off these deals?

Mitch had been the king of bad long term contract ma but he doesn’t get to make those on his own. All who have been involved with the contract negations (cal, stoops, JMI) need to be relieved of their duties yesterday.

Think I’ve understood the JMI deal to be a 15 year deal which is going to be another expensive buyout if a new AD can’t get that renegotiated. It will have to be done however or the next decade of UK sports will be dead.

I don't buy it. I think we have a coach who can't reel in the superstars with 20 minutes per game playing time. And we have a coach that's not very good at coaching up players anymore and always uses resources as an excuse.

Popes got the most expensive roster in basketball. But spread it out over 10 benchwarmers.

Stoops theoretically had one of the top portal classes in the nation. And the worst offensive coordinator leading them.

And then we have some people using that to support their grudges.

Here’s what our AI overlords say about it:

Team News - JMI Sports
The deal is an extended multimedia rights agreement between the University of Kentucky (UK) and JMI Sports, valued at over $465 million, which will run through 2040. This partnership, which began in 2014, makes JMI Sports the exclusive multimedia partner for UK Athletics and expands JMI's responsibilities to include strategic guidance on NIL (name, image, and likeness) operations, facilities development, and fan engagement.

Key aspects of the deal
  • Multimedia rights: JMI will continue to handle the selling of advertising, sponsorships, and media rights for UK Athletics, including radio rights for football and basketball, and corporate signage at various venues.
  • Extended term: The new agreement extends the partnership from 2034 to 2040, providing financial stability for the university.
  • New responsibilities: Beyond multimedia rights, JMI will now provide strategic advice for UK Athletics regarding:
    • NIL opportunities: JMI has already created a BBNIL Suite to help streamline NIL deals for student-athletes and corporate partners.
    • Facilities development: JMI will advise on facility investments and fan experience projects to keep the athletic program competitive.
    • Sponsorships: The agreement includes the development of new sponsorship categories and expands existing ones, such as facility naming rights.
  • Revenue sharing: The new deal includes a revenue-sharing model where 80% of the net revenue from multimedia and advertising inventory will be allocated to UK and Champions Blue, a non-profit LLC that serves as a holding company for UK Athletics.
  • Projected value: The deal is estimated to be worth more than $465 million, making it one of the largest in college athletics history.

To add to this, my concern is other programs managed by JMI. For example they have a partnership with UGA. What “if” they’d make more money as a corporation sending certain recruits to UGA vs UK. They could potentially hamstring UK media, NIL, etc to achieve maximizing their profits. Their main interest is being a profitable business not what’s best for UK.

Not sure what the issue with JMI is supposed to be when we allegedly spent "$22 Million" on this year's roster? (Still don't buy that number, but I can definitely believe we spent the most)
The staff is to blame for building this roster. They went with toughness and defense, something a Pope team is not known for

It’s $$$! Don’t let that $22 million payroll story pull the wool over your common sense!

That story was floated by someone at UK as a distraction from the real truth, and I believe at first some guys on the MBB team were like, WTF, hence the story of locker room drama that occurred shortly afterwards.

UK relies on a couple of big donors, while other programs have secured multiple streams of funding!

Unfortunately, NIL was always going to be UK’s Achilles Heel.

Who does this "deal" benefit the most monetarily? Nothing I've heard thus far suggests that it benefits UK in any way that makes sense. It true, why does a deal that handicaps the University in the ways described even exist? Until proven otherwise and human nature being what it's always been, follow the money and don't be surprised if what you find disappoints you. Transparency, especially when dealing with financial matters, is crucial. This university's Athletic Dept. has always seemed to operate fast and loose with money while being tight-lipped about details. Why would Capiluto and Barnhart concoct a plan for Mitch to be retained as consultant while ushering in his associate to take his place. Just asking because the decisions that are being made in daylight don't make sense. Are there people being promoted and paid to manage the status quo to hide something? Now honestly, I don't know but unanswered questions will always generate new ones until things begin to make sense. I hope things make sense soon.

JMI made Matt Jones mad because he can no longer free load off the program and doesn’t get special treatment so he attacked them. Matt Jones has control over the minds of 80% of BBN so JMI bad even though they can’t say how.

Ask them specifics about any of their claims and they will never answer. They’re pushing a narrative that Matt Jones created. Ask them specifically how JMI is hurting recruiting, they will never answer. Ask them how JMI hurts NIL specifically, they will never answer. Ask them when the say it seems like JMI can veto anyone we sign where they got that false information, they will never answer. When they say it seems like some fine print limits other deals, ask them what fine print, they will never answer. This is Matt Jines handiwork. He has successfully made a fanbase hate a media rights company without them being able to give legitimate reasons why. That’s how much control he has over these people.

Instead of promoting NIL at Kentucky, Matt Jones has successfully gotten UK fans to attack it, spread rumors about it, and lie about it, but not give to it. I guess there’s no way for him to profit from it so why not.

Your concern is JMI would ruin their credibility as a multibillion dollar company to make more money from one of their numerous clients with Georgia over another one with Kentucky? Why would you assume the worst? What is this based on? Should UK leave the SEC and Nike too because they could try to hurt UK to make more money off of Georgia too or is this uniquely a JMI issue?

Yep. 100%. Matt told on himself and I told people where to go find it, but they won’t. Not enough people think for themselves and listen to these “thought leaders” like Matt who only tells the part of the story that benefits his narrative.

Not to mention Barnhart and his executives get paid millions every time they resign with JMI. It’s all a crock of **** like most big deals. He profits off it and doesn’t care if the sports do good or not. Whatever is best for him and his cronies. Our Sports department is basically Congress.

15 years it extended it too, but that is still a long damn time.
Yes. It was a 10 year deal. Extended 15.

The deal is not a problem yet. But it has the potential to be a big problem.

UK has a lot of really big money donors. Most fans have no idea who they are.

UK does not have an NIL problem. We have not been outbid for any player.

This deal affects only the money that the university has control over. They are acting as a de facto GM for those monies. Among many other things.

The private investors, which is where most of the money comes from, are not directly affected by this deal. Yet!! That’s the worry.

I’ll give you an example, a very good friend of mine gives in the area of $5 mil per year.

Almost all in self directed NIL money.

He was approached to just write one check and let them administer it along with the $31 mil the contract earns.

He said he would consider it as long as he had say in where it was spent. He was told he would not have any say. So he passed.

He still spent the money. Maybe not $5 mil but in the ballpark.

There’s nothing wrong with that. The problem comes in that JMI works almost like a clearing house for those private deals.

As far as anyone knows JMI has not stopped any private deals.

But it appears they could. If that were to happen it’s game over.

That’s why this is a terrible contract.

They keep saying that the fear will never happen.

But it only takes one time. Say you have a donor willing to write a $10 mil check. And we have far more of those people than most could ever imagine. But they are told they need to spend it other than where they want? There won’t be a check written at all after that.

Those are things that could have been addressed had they not tied to 15 mote years without an easy out.

But even if that were addressed by addendum it’s still stupid to tie to 15 years when NIL is changing almost monthly.

Yes, it’s nice to assure the university of $31 mil/yr.

But you just can’t tie your hands in a year where you might need more. This may not do that?

But it has the potential to.

It runs thru 2040 now.

Barnhart and his executives do, it’s in the contract and it’s public. He should be jailed for crap like that, pure corruption.
It’s so public that you nor anyone else on this board could produce the evidence if your life depended on it. He gets paid “millions” in this public but hidden and unable to find contract. They back back up a single one of their claims.

And people say that while entirely omitting that Matt admitted right on the air that the NIL collective he was trying to get inked contractually heavily involved one of his own friends/business partners lol
