Notre Dame beat 4-6 Texas (tied with West Virginia for 5th in Big 12), 4-7 Virginia (4th in ACC Coastal), 3-8 Georgia Tech (LAST in ACC Coastal), Massachusetts (non-Power 5), 9-1 Navy (non-Power 5), 7-4 Southern Cal , 9-2 Temple by 3 points (non-Power 5), 8-3 Pitt (2nd in ACC Coastal), 3-8 Wake Forest (tied for 5th in ACC Atlantic), 3-8 Boston College by 3 points (LAST in ACC Atlantic) with 9-2 Stanford the final game.

There are 4 teams in the Big 12 that could go 10-1 with that schedule. No team not named Notre Dame would be in the national playoffs after playing that schedule.

So why the Irish?

The playoff committee's credibility will be lower than the BCS' reputation if it puts the Irish into the national playoffs with THAT resume. Hell, WVU could go 8-4 against that lineup.

CFE, you know Notre Dame is different. Remember the year under Faust when the Liberty Bowl tried to get the NCAA to wave the 6 win rule so they could take ND after a mighty 5-6 campaign? It didn't work, but the folks in Memphis tried every angle to get the Domers.

I once heard Beano Cook on a radio show in the three TV network days. He said the reason there was a NCAA rule on how many appearances a team could have on television in a season was due to the fact the networks would have ND on every week.

Beano was right. A decade after cable revolutionized college sports, NBC became the Notre Dame Network.

Another thing about ND. They don't play in a conference and don't play in a conference title game, but none of the talking heads ever bring that up. Conversely, it is mentioned by everyone of them when talking about the Big12.

I agree CFE, but if they beat Stanford in a true road game, I would have to give them some credit. Stanford is a lot better than the other teams on that list though and the reasons you list are why I would favor the Cardinal.

The schedule has gotten raves on how tough it is. I agree...don't see it. Navy and Temple...really?

If the committee were picking blind by resumes, Notre Dame wouldn't stand a chance.
But if the committee is blind about reality ...... This one would set up a firestorm if ND gets in because that would mean TWO Power-5 champs would NOT make the playoffs. Look at the uproar over Baylor and TCU not getting in last year.

ACC, Big 12, Big 10 and SEC champs should form the playoffs field.

Unless there are double standards.

This is just me, but I will be surprised if Notre Dame beats Stanford. In fact, I'll be surprised if it's close.

Whether the Big 12 champion makes the playoff probably has no effect on bumping us up the bowl-selection ladder.

You have to remember to look at the New Year's Six bowls as all one group. The 2 playoff semis are simply 1/3 of that group.

Last year our league had 2 teams in the NY6, they both just happened to be placed in the 4 non-playoff games rather than 1 being in the semis.

There would not suddenly have been a third Big 12 team among the NY6 bowls if Baylor or TCU had made the playoff. It simply would've bumped Ohio St or Florida St down from the semis into the non-semi NY6 bowl position that Baylor or TCU actually filled.

The same is likely going to be true this time. Two Big 12 schools probably will be in the NY6 again. We would need 3 for it to affect WVU, and that almost certainly isn't going to happen.

correct. The only way we get bumped up (Russell Athletic) is if Okie and Baylor get in the new years six, ok st gets the Alamo, and then an 8-4 WVU gets selected over a 9-3 TCU . I think its possible but probably not likely.
We would need something similar to happen with the ACC for sPitt to get in the Russell also. Would guarantee a sellout or damn near for that bowl however. But first we need to win 2 more games.
