The season still has a long way to go, but the early indications are that we have another version of "team turmoil." I sincerely think that Pope is a great offensive mind, but the other demands of coaching at Kentucky include the recruiting and development of top talent. It is not going to be easy to win in the NIL era at Kentucky without recruiting the best and then developing them to their potential.
We have to recruit at the highest level, fundraise NIL at an ever increasing level, while at the same time managing egos and NIL driven distractions. We are in uncharted territory for our program, and few coaches out there could handle this type of scrutiny and pressure in year two.
There is a real danger that Pope created his own undoing during his opening press conference. He set unrealistic expectations for a fanbase that is desperate for change. We are desperate for national relevance and for number 9. Promising to get our program there when, in reality, we were facing a full ground-up rebuild of the roster and the culture of the program was folly. Pope might understand the Kentucky fanbase and the program with an apex Rick Pitino at the helm, but he will see the impatient and anxious side when the losses pile up this season.
I like Pope and want him to succeed, but unless he's able to turn this season around from the brink, we are in for a rough time. The SEC will not play down when Kentucky is on the court. We get everyone's best shot, and it is a real shame that we don't give our opponents the same courtesy.
