This Team is an Enigma

This game against Tennessee Tech was very frustrating for me and is emblematic of this team. This game never should have been close. But with under 6 minutes left in the first half, it was 25-25. You can argue Tennessee Tech made shots early they don't normally make and UK missed a bunch of shots early they usually make.

That argument would hold water if this were the only time these things have happened, but it's not the first time. This team struggles with 2 primary issues (other than lack of elite talent)

1. Slow starts have been an issue in nearly every game. Otega Oweh is notorious for his slow starts, and it has continued this season. Last season, his slow starts didn't hurt us because others didn't have that same struggle and when his offense finally would kick in, we'd go on a 2nd half run. But he's not alone this year in slow starts. The entire team seems to sleep walk through the first several minutes. It's like they have to feel their way to some kind of rhythm.

2. This team is bi-polar. Or perhaps similar to something like a junior high girl. Their mood greatly affects their entire game. First half, we looked like brick layers out there- couldn't buy a three. They get down on the themselves when shots don't fall, that leads to poor defensive effort, which leads to early deficits. Made Tennessee Tech look really good for the first 14 minutes of the game. But that kind of play against good teams leads to large deficits and eventually losses (like against Louisville and Mich St) But when shots are falling, it seems they can't miss. That 2nd half tonight, they were on the manic side of bi-polar and couldn't miss. Shot 70% from the floor and 70.6% from 3. Everyone got in on it. And the defense was better also- made steals, blocked shots, run outs for dunks, help defense was better- the team was better on both ends.

The big question for me is this: How do we get the team to shoot like that and defend like that from the start?

Aside from getting completely healthy and adding some additional talent to the floor, there isn't an easy answer. These guys are not elite offensive players, but they CAN be very good defensively, when they're locked in.

So, here's my answer: They've GOT to focus on defense first in every game. They've got to come out like they're down 10 from the opening tip. They need to create offense with their defense. Once they get going, I think they can be pretty good. But these slow starts and fickle feelings about missing shots will kill us.

DEFENSE FIRST. That's the only viable solution for this team, in my opinion, at least until we get fully healthy and have some additional talent.

Have you ever noticed how after Oweh commits a turnover, he comes back on defense dialed in and often gets a steal? What if he played defense like that on every possession?
Yeah, I have noticed that. His #1 issue is focus and effort. He said so himself after the Mich St loss. The big question, then, is this: if you know that is a struggle, why not play with max effort from the opening tip, in every game? But he's not alone on this team, as I say. It has lost us 2 games already and more are coming, I'm afraid.

I wish there was something enigmatic about this team, but so far it has been an open book that is easy to read: Unprepared, unfocused, not capable of effectively defending, athletically average and with no transcendental talent. Against low D-1 players those structural flaws are eventually overcome. Against teams that are Top 25 or better, those deficits are fatal.

Until the team plays a game that breaks the pattern, it is no mystery. It’s just a mediocre collection of players poorly assembled by Pope.

I hope this team eventually plays a game that will make the way it has played so far seem puzzling. But it has been consistent through November. Getting late to change, with the only factors not yet displayed being a healthy Lowe and a playable Quaintance.

I’m really excited to see JQ play. Kids loaded with potential. I think he’s the most talented player on our roster. The thing that worries me, even when he comes back our perimeter defense has to improve to turn things around against quality competition.

Pope has got to stop striking out on these highly ranked guys out of high school and the portal. If that doesn’t change he won’t last long here.

as for last night defense wasn’t great so lots of open threes. Should be interesting Tuesday.

Can't argue with you at all but if I could, I am going to throw my two cents in.
I have a hard time not believing all this money being floated around these kids today has been somewhat a negative. When I saw yesterday that the winner of that Vegas tournament received a million dollar payout for winning, the first thing I thought about was the NCAA tournament and how that will turn into a pay for play event.

When I owned my business, I noticed something when I gave out bonuses or gave a raise. Some workers gave more effort and some actually slacked off from what they had been doing.
I noticed this after we did the flooring for an apartment complex. The owners of the complex had a really bad water leak that ruined almost all the flooring in the bottom units and needed all the flooring changed to a vinyl planking floor. With people living in the units, trying to work around all the intangibles likes work schedules, furniture, etc. It was not easy.
My guys did a great job and I rewarded them with a bonus and raise.
Come next job, some took that as "my s**t don't stink" and I had to stay on them for the entire job. Others took it as a challenge to try and see if they could get another at a boy.
Money changes people.
When money becomes the sole motivator for someone, people tend to become "me first".
Then you add in talent/skill, or lack of, and it shows even more.

My point is, no matter what, these kids are getting paid whether they complete the job or not.
Times sure have changed and in some areas not for the better.

Agree my friend. I will reserve judgement until I see the whole product. I still think we have the ability to be really good, possibly even final 4 good if things turn around when the 3 get back to the court. Have to play better defense early in games though to get our offense going.

I mean it’s really not to anyone with any sense of reality. We have played 2 good teams, got down by 20 to both. Beating up on bad competition doesn’t erase this fact and you are correct it took a bit for that to even take place. Until this team plays well against the opponents we need to play well against the board vibe will not be good.

The thing is, it wasnt just them making shots and us missing them. We see that from time to time under Cal (and every coach probably), where the other team just makes shots early and theres not much you can do.

But last night's game was really glaring how bad we can look as individual talent and as a cohesive unit. Thankfully we turned it around

Again, the hand wringing after a 50 point win is just ridiculous. Last nights game has nothing to do with our two losses to ranked teams. I was just pointing out how those that are complaining that we were tied halfway through the first half are just looking for anything to be mad about.

We're missing two probable starters and Oweh is working his way back to 100% and he's a starter. Sanity won't even begin to make a judgement on this team until those two are back and have played a few games. You just can't judge this team until January at the earliest but some need instant gratification and can't control themselves.

Throw in rival trolls posting as UK fans and people that don't even care but love stirring the pot and it's nothing but clutter.

I think, to me, the issue is Oweh's passive demeanor. By default, he is the leader of this team, so he sets the tone.
Guys like Aberdeen, Chandler Malachi (sp?) are trying to overcome that, but they aren't the leaders, so there's only so much they can do. This team needs their leader to be a dawg and Oweh just isn't that guy.

Maybe Lowe can come back and take the reigns.

I hope youre right. Idk. I just feel like im seeing something that we didnt even really see with Cal's weaker teams.. which is what seems to be a lack of control and urgency from Pope. A ship that's run a little too loosely. And you couple that good-but-not-great talent.. and its worrisome.

I never counted out Cals teams (except the covid year) because he still had them playing hard and we had the talent that could take over games, even if he became a subpar xs and os coach (and one who started to make spiteful decisions).

But we have a lot of time left and like you said, players coming back. Not losing faith, just a little concerned.

It would be nice to see them come out at the start of a game playing like their life depended on the outcome. Hit the opponent in the mouth as opposed to taking the first punch. The never recovered against the tards, Mich. St. or G-town.

So when Mo D returns from his mysteriously long injury, who takes his place with their mysteriously long injury?

If/ when JQ makes his debut, who gets injured first, Moreno or Garrison?

we don’t have elite talent, but we have good talent and are deep.

Everyone plays together and plays hard in their 3-5 minute bursts, we will look as good as a lot of our Elite 8 or Final Four teams. Were teams like 1998 or 2003 vastly more talented than this one?

I wanted him gone the last two years because it was time and this was a messy divorce in the making.. not because I think he didnt have "it" anymore (although I think he certainly showed some weaknesses as the years went on).

We lost to St. Peter's because our guards were injured. Oakland was because he refused to start the right guys and had his loyalties to DJ Wagner. That was the egregious one that really did it.

I don’t know yet. Want to see JQ first. If he gives us a lottery level post talent then I’m not so sure.

Regardless, my main point was that we have plenty of talent to be a terrific team if guys fill their roles and play together.

Oweh is All-SEC talent. Lowe All-ACC. JQ lottery pick?

Kam NBA prospect. Chandler deep ball threat who can jump out the gym.

Denzel and Mo key contributors on championship/FF teams.

That’s a pretty talented core of 7 with gap fillers like Noah, Jasper, Moreno, Jelavic who are just getting better.

If you can’t mold that into a team with FF potential it’s a coaching problem.

The answer here is coaching preparation. Not sure why but even last year's Pope team had some slow, mind boggling starts and defensive lapses.

The slow starts can easily be tied to how well the coaches prep the team for the game and hype them up going in. They sleep walk every game start.

Did you not watch GU, UL and MSU? If they don't blow the doors off of nobody and start fast, they don't seem to be able to catch up against real competition. All three of those aforementioned games were losses and started exactly like the cup cakes as far as UK's mind boggling first half woes. Yeah, we made it close against UL, but the reason we were down and lost in all three of those games was because of poor first half starts.

I am going into the next 5 weeks of ranked opponents assuming we will lose all of them. If we win, great, but right now my spirits are pretty low. Hopefully the return of Mo, Lowe (and possibly, but not likely, JQ) will turn this thing around and get me back on track.

Indeed. Money is a necessity, but it becomes a poison when there is so much involved.

This is why I think schools need to negotiate performance metrics for NIL deals. I know, they're not involved, but at some point the schools and coaches need some kind of managerial control to make these highly-paid kids perform or get some kind of fine or NIL reduction.

To those thinking I'm wringing my hands after a 50pt win, I'm not upset about the 50pt win at all. I enjoyed that 2nd half very much, in fact. I watched it twice.

The thing that worries me is the slow start and the thing that concerns me is the manic-depressive way the team plays. They've dominated the cupcakes but their psyche seems very fragile to me. When shots are falling, they can't seem to miss. But when they're not falling, it affects their entire game and they seem to be in a haze. Louisville and Mich St got physical with us and we wilted. Shots weren't falling and it seemed to snowball. We need to be more resilient, not get pushed around. And mainly, I think this has to be a defense first team, more than others. Gotta come out with defensive intensity every single time out.
