This video really made me question Pope as a serious coach.

It annoys me when people say it's about losing 2 games. No it's about not competing at all and playing so poorly that guys like Mashburn and Issel are calling players out.
I agree. But it’s still two games. I was extremely upset in 2019 when Duke absolutely destroyed us. It felt like the end of the world, but that season clearly wasn’t done. Teams can get better with time.

Popes aged 5 years in a year. It aged Cal 40 yrs to where I was worried the man was getting Alzheimer’s. Had Pitino looking like a damn vampire even though he was coaching elsewhere, that’s how bad we was in his head. Now Cals looking healthy again and even Pitino.
This job really takes a strong person to coach here and to be honest idk. Popes gotta be able to recruit and has to get the right guys here. I thought he done a great job last year but injuries killed us. This year so far with how things are going and no recruits for next year has me worried.

at least it was a strip tease unlike the poles an hour away but yea now he just has to tease us into winning against appropriate opponents. thus far just an epic failure when against the odds.

Is anything unredeemable? Looked like he had a different look about the presser last game, and ultimately if he can get this figured out, wouldn’t that be a good thing?
Yes. For sure. I made this thread right after the game- so somewhat an emotional thread (like 10-15 others). It was just brought back for whatever reason.
But, I have said before that Pooe’s personality is not consistent with current and past elite coach’s. Someone brought up Pearl and painting his chest. BUT- most everyone knows he is a Fing dog who wants to rip your throat out. He recruits players like that. Pope is just the opposite is all. Hope I am wrong. Now, I am going to bump the other 15 threads that were posted within 10 minutes of Pope’s meltdown :)

Ahhh. Understood. I’ll respond to what you said last first. If you look around, it’s very very obvious that someone who’s a little TOO pro-Pope has created a bunch of new accounts and posting replies to themselves in multiple threads. That kind of thing is just as trollish in my mind as the eight hundred Anons popping up everywhere with only a negative slant. It wouldn’t shock me if any of that had to do with it. Any true fan is gonna be mad at how things went the other night, so that’s understandable.

As for Pope’s demeanor, I’m still in a wait and see on that. Plenty of successful coaches have had different types of personalities and there’s reason to believe Pope is a little different than we know anyway. I hope it all turns around and I have my concerns like anyone else. I just hope we don’t all completely give up just yet, cause there’s still pages left to write.

Will you consider cooling off and coming to your senses before doing this again next time? If not then it really doesn't wash as an excuse and you have no legitimate complaint if you are called out for it at a future point. If it is indeed a one off as you do seem to be now regretting it it will be excused and forgotten soon enough.

You knew this weak attempt to pile on Pope would come up when times were tough.

Young got an open checkbook from his mentor the owner of the Utah Jazz. 20 times what CMP had when he was at BYU

And that is hard to understand, guess Ryan didn't think as much of BYU, when Pope was there. But I really think the first two years of NIL were not like it is now. Seams like people got smart like BYU, and jumped at the opportunity, that they never had before.

In your pathological need to trash all things Pope you conveniently overlooked, Mash and Issel were pointing out the lack of pride the players were taking in their games. We have some players not taking ownership of the quality of their game.

It’s a good question. It’s probably hard for him to connect to the typical “alpha” type player. Like John Wall, etc. he seems to go after nice/good hearted kids imo only.
Yeah which is weird because he played with Attitude and did the dirty work. You would think he would seek out kids like that. Warrior types.

Is he THAT outspoken about being Mormon? I feel like people here talk about Pope's faith more than Pope does.

Secondarily, Kevin Young is Mormon and got one of the best recruits in the class.
I think he was looking for the largest paycheck he could get and only one billionaire was willing to pay it.

No, this just just another dump on KY thread and the desperate PLOD is piling on any negativity that they can find. They are always looking to find ways to gut Pope.

He will be coach next year. The year after and the year after. It must be miserable to hate Kentucky so bad they have to attack his religion.
If this year implodes and we don’t get any studs for our next class his entire tenure will be up to the portal next year. If they fizzle there again landing stars and have a mediocre year again I could see him let go.

Well the good thing is, we don’t have to worry to the level we did with Calipari. If he doesn’t work the powers that pay for this will make a move and it’ll be over. Let’s see what happens, but Mark isn’t going to have happen to him what happens in these situations. He wanted this job and got it, he’s putting everything into it. If it’s above him Mark isn’t going to stay here and hurt this place.

Mark is a brilliant guy, and he’s got the brand. It’s hit time to show if he’s got this. If he doesn’t, I’d almost guarantee Oats or one close will be next. We don’t have to worry like with Calipari.

Yes. It is a new religion that was specifically founded on white supremacy. I like Pope, I do. I don’t see him as white sup, but the Mormon thing is actually an insidious, unseen hindrance to what he’s trying to do here. He’s a good guy, maybe even a great guy. Folks will deny that this could have any relevance. It does.
Lay off the college liberal BS for a little bit man. I respect a lot of your posts on basketball but these liberal views are just garbage.

Well, I see we're all in better moods.

Gotta love it when we belittle a man's faith. Not cool. Classless even.

The Malik Monk laughing game- that's all us (myself included because I WAXED that dude online after that) need to remember We got dog walked in February at Gainesville to an ok Florida team.

We should have won a title that year- but a striped bastard thought otherwise.

Also, remember we went in to AFH and beat the dog piss out of KU. Who won the title that year? Losing sucks- losing to your hated rival sucks all the more. And I'm as passionate as any of you about letting us have it when we don't show up. I feel a smidge better this weekend due to Pope's improved demeanor. But a lot hinges on us showing up against IU and UNC. Those are must wins. If we lose those, it's gonna be a long season. It will be what it will be.

And Pope, God love him, will have a TOUGH job to do if we don't go anywhere this year. Every coach should get 3-4 years unless its obvious (aka BCG) they aren't a good fit.

Good point. A lot of fans have forgotten that 2017 team went through some rough patches as well before becoming really, really good late. Unless I saw something on tape that I literally thought was unfixable, I’m still remaining hopeful. I want to see big improvements versus the Tar Heels.

I wish half my Christian brethren and sistren (myself included) had as much sincerity of faith as most of the Mormons do. I'll never forget the time a couple of them showed up on my door. They were pleasant, cordial, and just wanted to talk about their faith genuinely. We had a nice chat and they went on their way. I disagree with some of their dogma but they practice it in sincerity. And I respect them for that.

Now these losers are acting like Pope did it in some UK head coaching capacity and not 12 years ago for the celebration of the 96 championship team that he couldn’t attend.

This. He LOVES Kentucky Basketball. He loved his time here. And BYU was perfectly ok to let him celebrate his college days.

He wasn't born here like a lot of us. He CHOSE here and fell in love. I like the man. I just hold him to the same standard I hold ALL UK coaches.

You have to WIN.

I BLASTED that dude on line. BLASTED him. The only time I've really done that to a player.

I'll never forget Bam and Fox in tears after that loss and Bam saying "They say we don't care....but we do."

I miss some of those really great Cal teams. I miss the old Cal. The Cal that would say "Screw you. I'm taking everything you got and beating the hell out of you." True Swaggy Cal. The one that KNEW he could wax you and then talk ish about it.

I need Pope to develop a bit of that. Develop that famous Tubby stare. Use the Pitino hand glasses to mock a ref here and there.

It's like telling your wife "Hey, Love You" but then not doing the dishes or helping around the house.

I know you love us Mark. Clean the house man.

It may take awhile to find out what that thing is for Pope, though. He’s not Cal and he’s not even Tubby. He’s gotta be the best version of whatever he is. I feel like the fanbase can put pressure on you that may not always be something coaches *should* listen to. I know that’s probably rich coming from one of the more critical posters, particularly regarding the X’s and O’s and tactical approach. He’s gotta build something that caters to what his strengths are. I’ve been working the last couple of days on reminding myself to look big picture because the micro has been so bad that I just banged the table, begging to skip all that.

But we can’t. We can’t skip these dog days. They may be part of the process —- or they may be part of the unraveling of the “what could have been”. That remains to be seen.

I’ll choose to be hopeful.

yeah they’re trying to manipulate you into being a doctrinal white supremacist like them. They aren’t gonna initiate that by showing up randomly at your house and kicking your dog. The lack of any and all critical thinking on your part is comical. The Mormon Church being founded on white supremacy isn’t an opinion I have, I didn’t make their rules for them. Their own book says that dark skin is divine curse. A divine curse. Like my goodness, how much more blind could you be?

Everyone scroll to the 7:30 mark and listen to how the Mormon Church handles child sexual abuse. But I’m the crazy one for knowing about this 🙄🙄

You’re not wrong, but you should also acknowledge that the Mormons effectively have their own Pope-like religious leaders who have the ability to interpret and get new “infallible” word from God. They don’t believe like Protestant Christians do in sola scriptura. In other words, they don’t believe divine revelation is simply doctrinal, from a book. Their leadership have denounced these things long ago. I hate the dogma of the Mormon faith because it distorts the very gospel and deity of Jesus Christ. However, we can’t just throw things out there without acknowledging their theological shift because their foundation is very different from an evangelical Christian. Frankly, it’s also none of our business what the basketball coach believes. We just had a Catholic coach and I don’t agree with that either. Let’s stop with the religion bashing, please.

No, you're the crazy one for trying to suggest Mark Pope is a bad coach and person for being Mormon.

Catholics have just as bad a track record. Heck, so do a LOT of Christian denominations in Murica.
Every faith has their bas actors. Every. Single. One. Every sect of other beliefs (Atheists, Scientologists, etc) have their bas actors.

And I poke a bit of good natured fun at EVERY faith too, including my own. Why? Because an over-empathsis on dogma leads to extremism. And heaven knows, we don't need any more of that.

I tend to approach people as people.

Not as a broad brush of their chosen faith or ideals.

You should try that sometime.
