I installed solid core fire rated doors to all bedrooms along with hotel style door latches.

Alarm system...solid core door with safety latch system...panic room....large dog.... AR-15.

I don’t live in fear or anything just like to be cautious. God Bless America
Not sure if you are being serious or facetious, non the less, I found it funny.

All purpose. home defense, hunt, trap shoot, whatever.
I’d love to find a similar shotgun, but .410. i haven’t seen much to choose from in .410, but would be ideal for home defense. wouldn’t have to worry about shooting through a wall and hitting an unintended target.

About penetration.

It’s a long watch but informative.

To summarize.
-they test 12ga shotgun (various loads), 9mm, 5.56
-they used mostly ball ammo because it’s most common and more prone to penetration than defensive loads.
-pretty much nothing went through exterior walls on most buildings and homes.
-shotguns penetrate a lot more than people claim.....it was enough that the notion “I choose a shotgun because it penetrates less” is false.
-9mm which is probably the most common rd in home situations penetrates a lot. (As an aside, most pistol calibers penetrate a large amount)
-5.56 doesn’t penetrate nearly as much as you would think a rifle rd would because of the small bullet mass
-final thought - if you are using something in defense of your home, over penetration should be low on your list. Shoot what you’re accurate and comfortable with.

Oh, and trailers suck. Don’t live in one or near one.

One of the biggest reason our military went with using 5.56 is because if it hits bone or anything solid it tumbles causing more damage.

My shotgun is loaded with bird shot, followed by buck shot, followed by a slug.

My Wife and I are going Tuesday night to test fire guns and sign up for extended lessons.

We will do this in a responsible and well thought out manner. Maybe I’m just watching too much ID Network, but it seems like there’s a lot more messed up people then there used to be.

Absolutely. It’s a great couple activity. It’ll be interesting if your wife is better than you. It’s always humbling when you find out who has the knack and who needs more practice. Lol.

I’m not sure if there are more screwed up people (meaning proportion to general public) but I think the way they operate is. It seems like in the past a bad guy would stay in a bad area......and when he would do a crime, he would harm 1-2 people in that bad area. Now it seems like they’re purposely going out to nice, public areas trying to harm as many as they can. So, yes, they’re coming to your neighborhood.....so be prepared.

Good post.

Truth be told, we went to a shooting range in Florence 3-4 years ago to look into what kind of gun would suit us best.

At any rate, under supervision, we tried out some different handguns. As I recall, we both did well, but my Wife was a bit better than me.

Shortly after that night, both our Moms were diagnosed with metastatic cancer, and getting a gun was basically forgotten about.

They are beginning to go to more upscale areas to rob those neighborhoods because the booty is better. My next door neighbors house was broken into when they were gone, this happened a year or so before I moved next door. One behind me and down a bit had his broken in to while he and his wife were away and his wife came home to a busted door. She immediately went next door to the house behind me to ask the neighbor to check it out after she called the cops. He went in with gun in hand but the perps had already left. Another just recently had his boat with trailer stolen but, he had cameras and the license plate of the truck (Texas plates) was identified so, the crook was apprehended in Texas and charged.

Some on here have said they would rather just take their chances because it is just fate but, I say you help make your own fate by being a target or prepared.

Scared? No, being prepared helps me sleep better. I know how to fight and use my weapons.

I’ll never understand the rationale for intentionally pinning all your hopes on one chance when there are so many other great options available, but, hey, individual choices make ‘Merica the beautiful and great.

I’m assuming if the guy is asking in a message board he isn’t experienced with guns.
A pistol takes practice to get good with, nevermind the fact that you’ll be likely waking from a dead sleep if an intruder gets in your home.
Then take into account most intruders will flee if you brandish any weapon, much less if you actually fire it.

The sound of a shotgun being pumped is a great deterrent.

Good post.

This is going to sound heartless, but outperform your neighbors......tactically speaking.
-If you’re the only house on the street with alarm stickers in the window, the bad guys likely won’t choose your house.
-If you drive a Chevy when all your neighbors drive Lexus?
-if your house is well lit, but others aren’t?
Etc, etc.

Idk if this true or not, but the impression I get based on what I’ve seen is the penalties for committing crime are not severe. The trendy thing is “drugs aren’t bad! Don’t lock people up for drugs!”. Ok. Fine. But I see career felons doing little to no time at all, and they’re back out doing the same crimes.

The latest example this week was a fine young 35 year old who has no less than 6 second degree robbery charges since he was 18, sprinkled in with the typical dui, trafficking meth/cocaine/heroin, felolny weapon charges, domestic violence, etc etc. Seems he’s arrested once a year pretty much. This guy has made a career out of forcefully robbing people and selling drugs, and he hasn’t done a lick of hard time. How in the world is that possible?

Again, I don’t know if that’s normal, the way it’s always been, or if our system is becoming more of a joke. These criminals have little fear because they know the consequences are worth the crime.

Another disturbing trend you see in anti gun states are homeowners being charged for defending themselves inside their own homes. That’s ridiculous, and scary.

Get a Glock 19 and spend money on training how to use it. The Glock 19 is the most reliable, generic pistol on the planet. It goes bang almost every time you pull the trigger and it is the right size for most people to be the one gun to own if you only own one gun.

The guy who runs Tactical Rifleman (one of the videos above) frequently offers firearm training in Kentucky. I have attended it and it was worth every penny.

At this point, I think someone has to have a compelling reason to buy anything other than a Glock 19 if he or she is just looking to buy a pistol for home defense and to become more comfortable with firearms. There is way too much internet ninjitsu from dorks with swords and fake diplomas.

Ok, appreciated your honesty and perhaps it would be best but, don't you get tired of people saying things that they are but without the proof of it. It is easy behind a key board to say things without proof. Not bragging (though it might seem) but, I am who I say I am and have done the things I have said I have done. I don't hide who I am.

Rant over.

True facts from warrior and also those adivising him to remove his name.

There are two who guys popped up in this thread just to cause trouble, and I wouldn’t trust them. They could have attacked Schpeerz for all I know.

Lord help the dumbass who stumbles into Warriors dojo, though. Great American.

Any Sig 365 owners? That is one cool gun in terms of size + capacity. They’re coming out with a 4” 15rd version I think. I’m sure Sig has taken some sales away from Glock with their latest offerings.

I know, right?!

True story, my best friend from HS first job was a corporate spy agent. He had a criminal justice degree. A company trained him to be a spy. Corporations would hire his company, who’d send him in to ferret out illegal activity. One job involved working at a major auto manufacturer in Michigan. After 9 months of work, he was removed prior to the cops coming in.

-2 guys got busted for stealing auto parts and selling them illegally. They got 3-5 yrs jail time.
-about 10 guys got busted for drugs. Jail time ranged from 2-3 yrs up to 15 yrs.
-a ton of people got busted for bootlegging movies. Ranged from fines.......up to 25 yrs.

....for bootlegging movies?!

There were some initial hiccups when they released the model, but they’ve supposedly worked them out. It’s supposed to be an absolute slam dunk. I carry a 43 a lot and am jealous on how they smooshed 11 rds into something the size of my 43.

I’m a statistics guy. Someone in your home is much more likely to be hurt or killed accidentally by a weapon than for that weapon to ever be needed to thwart an intruder if you’re at home in a locked well alarmed home. I have a couple of handguns locked away, completely useless for defense.

I have a baby Glock for everyday carry, but I have a 20 guage o/u for home protection. I don't like pumps, too noisy, I want element of surprise, same with auto, too loud loading. I also prefer shotgun because it won't penetrate a bunch of walls.
Yeah, never know when a cartel is going to invade your Prospect home on Hunting Creek. I'd say pick up a few more just to be safe.

Great call though for carrying while slumloard Ioarding in the deep west end.

For a “statistics guy” you don’t read through the numbers well.

From 2010-2012 about 2% of all firearm deaths were accidental. That’s 584/yr. And this is everywhere, not just at home. And non-fatal injuries occur about 50 persons per 100,000 per yr. Once again, not separating home and away.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4700838/

While numbers yearly that indicate how many times guns are used for defense ranges from 67,000 to 3 million......depending on your source. Once again, not separating home from away.

And you didn't read Warrior's post well. He made the distinction / comparison to being "in a locked and well alarmed home". Appreciate the information you shared, but did any of it refute what Warrior stated on the basis of that clear distinction?

I double dead-bolt my front door and have a similar camera setup to Tony Montana's in my bedroom (which is protected by 2-inch thick steel doors). Also have several pistols placed strategically throughout the house and I wheel a Gatling gun in front of my front patio door every night.

Never know when some illegal immigrants will try to break in. I'm prepared.

I know a guy that had his door kicked in by a meth head carrying an AR-15. The guy I know shot him in the chest with a 9mm. Statistics were so important at that moment.

I am sure the resident anti gun posters would prosecute him.

Glock is not the only gun that goes bang every time. many fine, quality hand guns on the market these days, no need to spend half a grand on a hand gun.

....handguns for home and personal protection, what’s your recommendation?

Just looking for something simple to shoot. Kind of leaning towards a Glock.
