Thoughts on a Duke vs. UNC championship

I am sorry if something similar has already been posted, but I was wondering some of your thoughts about a potential Duke vs. UNC championship game. If I were a fan of literally any other team other than these two, I would absolutely love to see this, however, as a Duke fan, I do not. It is not that I do not think we could beat UNC, but, like any game, it would not be a sure thing. The rivalry debate would then have an ultimate winner, the winner of this game (at least for a few years), and I do not think that is a good thing.

I was just curious what you all think. Maybe I am all alone in this thinking, but I figured I would ask.

Well UNC fans always move the bar, so for one side the answer would be definitive but not the other. Take, for example, this year's conference champion. Everyone, except of course UNC fans, accept that Duke is the conference champ.
If we beat them in the national title game, we would be the real champ in the rivalry until they won something less meaningful - at which point they would crown themselves back on top.

This. In theory, it would be great but only if I’m guaranteed a Duke win, which is impossible. If Duke lost to the Cheaters in the NC game I think I’d lose it. There isn’t enough Xanax in the world to prep me for the 48 hours leading up to the game or the game itself.

I wouldn’t mind it this year. I think we would win. I absolutely could not not watch it though live. I would dvr it and if we won, watch with no stress. If we lost probably delete and never watch it.

Yeah, that's basically what I was trying to say. I'd love to break unc or ky fans hearts by beating them in the title game, and I'd love Zion to show Hatchinura how soft our D really is. But if we make it to the finals, and Abilene Christian is there waiting, I'm ok with that!!

I believe this was a big topic on this board a couple of years ago also, when there was a legit chance they could both make it. I'll say the same thing I said then. Ache ee double hockey sticks NO! As you and others have said, do I think we'd win? Yeah, and not just being a homer. With Marques back (even without him) I fully believe we're the better team. But it's a rivalry game, it's basketball. Anything can happen. The better team doesn't always win. The high of winning would be incredible, but the low of losing? I can't even imagine it. I don't know how I'd ever get in a debate with a UNx fan again. They'd always have the ultimate trump card, even if I owned them with facts. They can always just say "well we beat you in the NC game n 2019". Just no. If they're there when we get there, so be it. But I'd rather they lose well before then. My 2 cents.

Nope....never want them to meet in the big dance. These games against them are always stressful enough. Can’t imagine the title game against them.

I looked it up and my vote really doesn't count.

I think I'll be tickled if they make it to the championship game no matter who they are playing.

I NEVER want to play UNC in the NCAAT much less in the NCAA Championship game because if they were to beat us then we would NEVER hear the end of it from UNC fans. There’s a thread on the national board titled “Besides your team winning” and it asks what else you’d like to see happen in the NCAA Tournament besides your team winning and this was my answer “Either for UNC and Kentucky to both lose in the first round but if not that then if they play each other then whoever wins that game loses their next game.”

I could do without the added stress of UNC fans bragging. If we lost to, say, Auburn, it wouldn't hurt as bad. Not that I think we would lose, but still....

No. If any of you are wishing for this, I hope you don’t gamble lol. I’m not afraid. I even think that we’re better but that doesn’t matter in these games. I mean it’s Duke and Carolina. Aren’t the last 101 games like 51-50? Don’t get me wrong, the victory would be the happiest day of my life but the loss would burn a permanent hole in my heart that likely wouldn’t be up for redemption for decades, or even in my lifetime. Not worth the 50/50 risk.

And...... As much as I hate UNC, I do appreciate this rivalry and being a fan partaking in it. Every game every year is like a new level and different. I feel like this kind of achievement would be like beating a game and the seeing the credits roll.

I still think UNC is the better “team”. At least tit for tat when you compare different aspects of each team. If I have to explain why, I shouldn’t. Not gonna sit well but I don’t care:)

I have to give Roy Williams credit for the first time ever, in my entire life. I never liked watching his system and kind of thought he was a ****** coach, that held guys back and never called timeout. That being said, he seems to of done good job this year and I hate it, and don’t want to play them again.

The games are too close it’s like 50/50. If someone came up to me and said hey put your savings on the table. I’ll flip a coin, heads you double it, tails you lose it... No chance in hell I’d risk that. I feel kinda the same about this situation.

Admitting that I’m afraid makes me feel like I’m saying UNC is better though and I’m not

No I get what you're saying . They're not better. But they are damn dangerous and I don't think many fans want that risk

It doesn’t bother me saying I’m scared. And like others, I’m not scared because I think they’re better. I’m scared because it’s Duke-UNC.

Basically, in sports, UNC beating Duke in the national championship is quite possibly the worst thing that could ever happen to me. Again, in sports. Why even bother risking something like that if I don’t have to? Makes zero sense.

Big NO. Can’t stand playing them in the regular season, and it’s worse in the ACC Tourney.
If we lost, it would be the worst off season ever.
I think we’re better, but I’d prefer someone beat them 3 weekends earlier.

No way.....Theres just too much we''d have to hear (especially here in NC- Sky, Mac, QC many of the rest of you guys know). As an added sidelight, the state is so consumed w/UNC folks (not just talkin fans, but officials in really high positions) I cannot say I would fully trust the game would unfold FAIRLY. No way I would want this NATTY game EVER!

Okay, I want the Heels to lose every game, and the sooner the better, because I don't want them to advance at all if possible. But that being said, if they're cruising through the brackets, then there is no one I'd rather to be there to stop them from winning a championship than Duke. We're better, and as Honkey said, we have Zion and they don't. If we play them, we'll beat them, and I don't have a problem with it if it comes down to us playing them. Big risk, big reward. And if somehow we did lose, well, I've seen worse things.

The March Madness marathon on espn2 just brought this up and whether or not a Duke/UNC title would be good for basketball. There were differing opinions with Bilas talking about how it affected the (team’s) mood when it lingered in 1991. J Will said he won’t do the pregame or post game bc of nervousness. The final statements were that it would be good for fans of the game bc everybody tunes into Duke/UNC, but it would be bad for Duke and UNC fans (Reece). I agree with Reece. Non Duke and UNC fans, except for maybe KY fans, would want to watch that title game if their teams are out of it. Duke and UNC fans, for the most part, want no part of it.
